Dante walked through the forest for hours. The sun rose over the mountains. The birds began to sing. The world was waking up.

He felt nothing.

The rage was gone. The grief was gone. The emptiness was all that remained.

He reached the road. His car was still there. He got in and drove.

The motel appeared ahead. Naomi was waiting on the steps. Her face was pale, her eyes swollen from crying.

"You came back," she said.

"I said I would."

She crossed to him. Her hand touched his cheek. "You look like hell."

"I feel like hell." He pulled away. "It's over. The network is gone. The targets are dead."

Naomi searched his eyes. "What about Sasha?"

"She's alive. She helped me. We made a deal."

Naomi's expression hardened. "You made a deal with her? After everything she did?"

"I needed her. She had the information. She knew where the targets were hiding."

Naomi shook her head. "You can't trust her. She'll betray you the moment it suits her."

"Probably." Dante walked past her. "But for now, we're allies."

He entered the motel room. Collapsed on the bed. His body was exhausted, but his mind wouldn't stop.

Naomi followed him inside. "What happens now?"

Dante closed his eyes. "I don't know. I never planned for after."

"Then let's plan together." She sat beside him. "We can start over. Find a new life. Away from all this."

"A new life." Dante opened his eyes. "What would that even look like?"

Naomi took his hand. "It would look like us. Together. Building something real. Something honest."

Dante stared at her. The hope in her eyes was genuine. The love was genuine.

But he didn't know if he could give her what she wanted. He was too broken. Too damaged.

"I don't know if I can do that," he said. "I don't know if I can be that person."

"Then we figure it out together." She squeezed his hand. "One step at a time."

Dante was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded.

"One step at a time."

---

They spent the next few days in the motel. Healing. Planning. Trying to figure out what came next.

Dante checked his phone constantly. No messages from Sasha. No messages from Viktor.

The silence was unsettling.

Naomi noticed. "You're waiting for something."

"I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop." He put down his phone. "Sasha didn't help me out of the goodness of her heart. She has a plan. I just don't know what it is yet."

"Then we prepare. We plan. We're ready for whatever she throws at us."

Dante nodded. "I need to get my weapons. Better weapons. More ammunition."

Naomi stood. "I know a guy. Black market dealer. He's reliable."

"I'll go with you."

"No. You need rest. You've been running for weeks." She grabbed her jacket. "I'll be back in an hour."

Dante watched her leave. The door clicked shut.

He sat in the silence. The loneliness was familiar. Almost comforting.

His phone buzzed.

A message from Sasha.

"Meet me at the factory. Now."

Dante's jaw tightened. He typed a reply. "What for?"

"I have information. About the network. About the people who are still out there. You need to see this."

Dante hesitated. Then he stood. Grabbed his weapon.

He drove to the factory.

The building was dark. Silent. But lights glowed from the office above.

Dante entered through the loading bay. Moved through the shadows. Climbed the stairs.

The office door was open. Sasha was inside. She was pale. Her hands were shaking.

"Cross. Thank you for coming."

Dante's hand moved to his weapon. "What's going on?"

Sasha pushed a folder across the desk. "I found something. Something I didn't expect."

Dante opened the folder.

Inside were photographs. Documents. Names.

The network wasn't gone. It had just gone underground.

There were new leaders. New operations. New targets.

And at the center of it all, a face he recognized.

Naomi.

Dante's blood went cold. "What is this?"

"Evidence. She's been working for them the whole time." Sasha's voice was tight. "The network never collapsed. It just changed leadership. And Naomi was part of it."

Dante shook his head. "That's not possible."

"I thought the same thing. But look at the dates. The locations. The communications." Sasha pointed to the documents. "She's been feeding them information. Your location. Your plans. Your weaknesses."

Dante stared at the photographs. Naomi meeting with strangers. Handing over files. Taking orders.

His world tilted.

"Where did you get this?"

"I've been tracking her for weeks. I suspected something was wrong." Sasha's eyes were steady. "She's been playing you from the start. Just like the rest of us."

Dante's hand trembled. He wanted to deny it. Wanted to believe it was a lie.

But the evidence was there. Incontrovertible. Damning.

"Why?" he asked. "Why would she do this?"

"I don't know. But I'm going to find out." Sasha stood. "We're going to confront her. Together."

Dante shook his head. "No. I need to do this alone."

"Cross—"

"She was my ally. My partner. My..." He couldn't finish the sentence.

"Your lover," Sasha finished. "I know. Which is exactly why you shouldn't go alone. You're too close to this. You won't be able to see clearly."

Dante's jaw tightened. "I can handle it."

"I'm not questioning your ability. I'm questioning your judgment." Sasha stepped closer. "You need me for this. You need someone who can see what you can't."

Dante was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded.

"Fine. We do this together."

Sasha smiled. "Good. I'll get my car."

---

They drove back to the motel. The night was dark. The streets were empty.

Dante's mind raced. Naomi. The woman he'd trusted. The woman he'd loved.

She'd been playing him the whole time.

They reached the motel. Dante entered the room.

Naomi was there. She turned as he entered.

"Dante, I was worried. Where did you—"

She stopped. Her eyes widened as she saw Sasha.

"What is she doing here?"

Dante pulled out the folder. "I found something. Something I need you to explain."

Naomi's face went pale. "What is that?"

"Evidence. Documents. Photographs." He threw the folder on the table. "You've been working for the network. The whole time."

Naomi's expression shifted. From confusion to fear to something else. Something darker.

"You found out."

Dante's blood went cold. "It's true."

"I had no choice." Naomi's voice cracked. "They have my family. My real family. They said they'd kill them if I didn't cooperate."

"You could have told me. I could have helped."

"They said they'd kill you too. The moment I told anyone." Tears streamed down her face. "I was trying to protect you. All of you."

Dante shook his head. "You were protecting yourself."

"No. I was protecting the people I love." She stepped toward him. "Dante, I love you. I've always loved you."

"I don't believe you."

"It's true. I know I made mistakes. I know I lied. But everything I did was to keep you alive."

Dante stared at her. The pain in her eyes was real. The fear was real.

But so was the betrayal.

He pulled out his weapon. Aimed it at her chest.

"I should kill you," he said. "Right now."

"Then do it." Naomi's voice was steady. "If that's what you need to do, then do it."

Dante's hand shook. His finger moved to the trigger.

Sasha grabbed his arm. "Wait. This isn't the way."

Dante turned. "What?"

"She's telling the truth. I can see it." Sasha's voice was quiet. "She's not the enemy. She's a victim. Just like you."

Dante stared at her. Then back at Naomi.

He lowered the weapon.

"Get out," he said. "Both of you. Get out of here."

Naomi's eyes widened. "Dante—"

"Get out."

Naomi hesitated. Then she turned and walked out the door.

Sasha stayed. "Cross, you need to—"

"I need to be alone." He sat on the bed. "Just go."

Sasha studied him for a moment. Then she nodded and left.

The room was silent. Dante sat in the darkness.

His mind was chaos. His heart was broken.

The network was gone. The targets were dead. The war was over.

But the cost was everything.

He'd lost his family. His friends. His allies. His lover.

And all he had left was the emptiness.

He closed his eyes. Slept.

---

When he woke, there was a message on his phone.

From Naomi.

"I'm sorry for everything. I know it doesn't change what I did. But I want you to know that my feelings were real. I loved you. I still love you. I always will."

Dante read the message three times.

Then he deleted it.

He stood. Walked to the window.

The sun was rising.

It was a new day.

But the darkness was still there.

When love and betrayal become the same thing, how do you tell them apart?

But she didn't look away."Three years ago," she began, "I was recruited by the network. Not by choice. They had my family. They threatened to kill them if I didn't cooperate. I was young. Scared. I did what they asked."Dante's jaw tightened. "That's the same story you told me before.""Because it's true. But there's more." She took a shaky breath. "After my family died, I had nothing.
