The mountain road wound through dense forest. Dante drove with his lights off, navigating by moonlight alone.
The compound appeared through the trees. A wall of stone and steel. Guard towers. Motion sensors. A fortress.
Dante parked a mile away and approached on foot. He'd studied Sasha's schematics. Memorized every blind spot.
The perimeter was quiet. Too quiet.
He found a gap in the fence and slipped through. Moved through the shadows toward the main building.
The guards were professional. Alert. They patrolled in pairs, weapons ready.
Dante waited. Counted their patterns. Found the rhythm.
Then he moved.
The first guard dropped silently. Dante dragged him into the bushes.
The second guard turned. Dante was already behind him.
Two down. Eighteen to go.
He entered the main building through a service entrance. The interior was cold. Sterile.
Aldrich's private quarters were on the second floor. Dante climbed the stairs.
The door was locked. He picked it in seconds.
The room was empty. Aldrich was gone.
But something was on the desk. A folder. Open.
Dante crossed to it. Inside were photographs. Documents. Names.
His own name. Repeated.
Aldrich had been tracking him. Monitoring his movements. His contacts. His plans.
He knew about Sasha's deal. Knew about the mountain compound. Knew about Viktor.
Dante's blood went cold.
He reached for his phone. Sent a message to Sasha.
"Aldrich is gone. He knew I was coming."
The reply came fast. "Impossible. No one knew except us."
"Someone told him."
There was a pause. Then: "Viktor."
Dante's jaw tightened. Viktor had set him up. Led him into a trap.
He left the room. Moved through the building.
The guards were converging. They knew he was inside.
Dante found a back exit. Burst through the door.
The compound was alive with activity. Searchlights. Shouting. Gunfire.
He ran toward the forest. Bullets chased him.
He dove behind a boulder. Returned fire. Dropped two men.
Then he ran again. Deeper into the trees.
The pursuit continued for twenty minutes. Then the sounds faded.
Dante collapsed against a tree, breathing hard.
He'd been set up. Viktor had betrayed him. Or Sasha had. Or both.
He pulled out his phone. Checked for messages.
Naomi. "Where are you? The evidence is spreading. Aldrich is panicking."
Dante typed a reply. "Compound was a trap. Viktor sold me out."
"Where are you now?"
"Mountains. Heading back. Need to find Viktor."
"Be careful. He's moving. I'll track him."
Dante pocketed the phone. Pushed himself to his feet.
His wound had reopened. His arm was bleeding.
He walked through the forest. The night was cold. The stars were dim.
Viktor had to pay. He'd led Dante into a trap. Tried to get him killed.
But why? What did Viktor gain?
Dante's mind raced. Viktor was loyal to Aldrich. He'd been playing both sides. Feeding information to Sasha and Aldrich simultaneously.
The bastard.
Dante reached the road. Found his car. Drove back toward the city.
His phone buzzed. Naomi again.
"I found him. Warehouse district. West side. He's meeting someone."
Dante's grip tightened on the wheel. "Who?"
"Unknown. But he's not alone. At least six men."
Dante floored the accelerator. The warehouse district appeared ahead.
He parked two blocks away. Approached on foot.
The warehouse was lit from inside. Figures moved behind the windows.
Dante found a position on the rooftop across the street. Pulled out his binoculars.
Viktor was inside. Talking to someone.
A woman.
Sasha.
Dante's blood went cold. They were working together. Playing him from the start.
Viktor handed Sasha a folder. She examined it. Nodded.
Then she looked up. Directly at Dante's position.
She knew he was there.
Dante lowered the binoculars. His heart pounded.
Sasha pulled out her phone. Typed a message.
Dante's phone buzzed.
"Come down. We need to talk."
He stared at the message. Then at the warehouse.
Sasha was waiting. Viktor was waiting.
Both of them knew he was watching.
Dante descended from the rooftop. Walked toward the warehouse.
The door opened. Viktor stood in the entrance.
"Cross. We've been expecting you."
Dante's hand moved to his weapon. "You set me up."
"We saved your life." Viktor stepped aside. "Come inside. Sasha wants to explain."
Dante entered the warehouse. Sasha stood in the center, arms crossed.
"Aldrich isn't gone," she said. "He's still in the compound. We faked his escape to draw out the traitor."
Dante stared at her. "The traitor?"
"Viktor's men. One of them was feeding information to Aldrich. We needed to smoke him out."
Viktor nodded. "We found him. He's dead."
Dante's mind raced. "You used me as bait."
"Bait that worked." Sasha stepped closer. "The traitor is gone. Aldrich is still at the compound. And now you have a clear path to him."
Dante shook his head. "I'm done playing games. Tell me the truth. The real truth."
Sasha's expression softened. "The truth is, Cross, we need you. Aldrich is too powerful. Too connected. We can't take him alone."
"And Viktor?"
"Is with us. He was never the enemy. He was a pawn. Just like you."
Dante looked at Viktor. The man nodded.
"Webb was the real threat," Viktor said. "He manipulated all of us. Played us against each other."
Dante felt the weight of the words. Webb. The man who'd trained him. The man who'd betrayed him.
Webb was dead. But his influence lingered.
"Fine," Dante said. "We go together. We take Aldrich down. And then I'm done."
Sasha smiled. "Agreed."
Dante turned to leave. But at the door, he stopped.
"One more thing. The mole. The second source. You said it was someone from my past."
Sasha's smile faded. "I said you'd figure it out. Have you?"
Dante shook his head. "Not yet."
"When you do, you'll understand everything."
Dante left the warehouse.
The hunt continued.
But he was closer than ever.

I tried to make things right."Naomi approached. She knelt beside him. "They would be proud of you."Dante looked at her. "You think so?""I know

The Unlikely Alliance

The Shadow Council
The message appeared on Dante's phone at 3:17 AM."Your war is a distraction. The real enemy has always been above you. Meet us at the old courthouse. Come alone. We'll show you the truth."Dante stared at the screen. His hand moved to his weapon out of instinct. He'd been sleeping, but the adrenaline hit him like a shot of cold water.Naomi stirred beside him. "What's wrong?""Someone wants to meet.""Who?""I don't know." He swung his legs off the bed. "But they know where we are. They knew how to reach me."Naomi sat up. Her eyes were sharp, fully awake. "That's not good.""No. It's not."He dressed quickly. Checked his weapons. Naomi grabbed his arm. "Don't go alone.""I have to. They said come alone.""Since when do you follow orders from strangers?"Dante looked at her. The fear in her eyes was real. The love was real. But he needed answers."I'll be careful," he said. "I'll stay in contact."Naomi released his arm. "If you're not back in two hours, I'm coming after you.""I kno
The Reckoning
The safehouse fell silent.Dante's hand rested on his weapon. His eyes were locked on Naomi's face. She was pale. Trembling. But she didn't look away."Three years ago," she began, "I was recruited by the network. Not by choice. They had my family. They threatened to kill them if I didn't cooperate. I was young. Scared. I did what they asked."Dante's jaw tightened. "That's the same story you told me before.""Because it's true. But there's more." She took a shaky breath. "After my family died, I had nothing. No reason to keep working for the network. But I was already in too deep. I knew too much. They would have killed me if I tried to leave.""So you stayed.""I stayed. And I did terrible things. Things I'm not proud of." Her voice cracked. "Then I met you. And I started to see a way out. A way to fight back. To make things right."Dante's hand moved away from his weapon. "Why didn't you tell me this before?""Because I was ashamed. Because I was afraid you'd hate me. Because I was
