Dante's new life was quiet.

He'd rented a small apartment on the outskirts of the city. One bedroom. A kitchen. A window that faced the street. It was modest, but it was his.

He spent his days walking. His nights staring at the ceiling. The emptiness was still there, but it had become familiar. Almost comfortable.

He didn't answer his phone. Didn't check his messages. He'd cut himself off from everything and everyone.

The past was dead. The network was gone. The enemies were gone.

But the ghosts remained.

They visited him at night. Gary. Ana. Danny. His parents. Faces he'd loved. Faces he'd lost.

He woke in cold sweats. Reaching for weapons that weren't there. Fighting enemies that had already been defeated.

The nightmares were relentless.

One morning, he found a message taped to his door. It was written in a familiar hand.

"Cross. We need to talk. The Watering Hole. Tonight. Come alone."

Sasha.

Dante stared at the note. He wanted to ignore it. Wanted to stay in his cocoon of isolation.

But curiosity won.

He arrived at the bar at midnight. The place was empty. Sully was behind the counter, polishing glasses.

"Dante." Sully nodded. "She's in the back."

Dante moved through the bar. Found Sasha in a booth, a glass of whiskey in front of her.

"Cross. Thank you for coming."

"I almost didn't." He sat across from her. "What's so important?"

Sasha's expression was grim. "Naomi. She's not done. She's been rebuilding. Creating a new network. Stronger than before."

Dante's jaw tightened. "I let her go. She promised to disappear."

"She lied." Sasha pushed a folder across the table. "She's been recruiting. Consolidating. She's already established operations in three cities."

Dante opened the folder. Photographs. Documents. Locations.

Naomi's new network. Larger than the old one. More sophisticated.

"She's been busy," he said.

"Very busy." Sasha's voice was cold. "She's using everything she learned from you. From the old network. She's built something that could be even more dangerous."

Dante closed the folder. "What do you want me to do about it?"

"I want you to help me stop her."

"I'm done. I walked away. I'm not going back."

Sasha leaned forward. "You think you can walk away? You think she'll let you? You know too much. You've seen too much. She'll come for you eventually."

"Then let her come."

Sasha stared at him. "You really have given up."

"I haven't given up. I've just realized that fighting is pointless. No matter how many enemies I kill, more will take their place. The network will always exist. The violence will always continue."

"That's a defeatist attitude."

"That's reality." He stood. "I'm not going to help you. I'm going to go back to my apartment and try to forget."

Sasha grabbed his arm. "You can't forget. None of us can. We've done too much. Seen too much. We're marked. We'll always be marked."

Dante pulled free. "Then I'll learn to live with it."

He walked out of the bar.

---

The streets were empty. The night was cold.

Dante walked through the city, his hands in his pockets. The weight of the folder was still in his mind. Naomi's network. Naomi's betrayal.

He'd thought she was different. Thought she cared.

But she was just another monster. Another predator.

He reached his apartment. Climbed the stairs. Entered the dark room.

Something was wrong.

The window was open. The curtains were moving.

He reached for his weapon. Too slow.

A figure emerged from the shadows. Naomi.

"Dante. I was hoping you'd come home."

His hand moved to his weapon. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to say goodbye." She stepped closer. "I'm leaving the country. Starting a new life. But I couldn't leave without seeing you first."

"You should have left without seeing me."

"I couldn't. I owed you that much." Her eyes glistened. "I know you probably hate me. I know you'll never forgive me. But I needed you to know that what I felt was real. What we had was real."

Dante shook his head. "You used me. You manipulated me. You lied to me."

"I did. And I'm sorry for that." She stepped closer. "But I also loved you. I still love you."

"That doesn't change what you did."

"I know." She stopped inches from him. "That's why I'm leaving. I can't stay here knowing I hurt you. I can't pretend everything's okay when it's not."

Dante stared at her. The woman he'd loved. The woman who'd betrayed him.

He should kill her. End it. Make sure she never hurt anyone again.

But he couldn't. The love was still there. Buried under the pain. But still there.

"Go," he said. "Just go."

Naomi nodded. She turned and walked to the window.

She paused. "Goodbye, Dante."

She disappeared into the night.

Dante stood in the dark room. The emptiness was back. Deeper than before.

His phone buzzed. A message from Sasha.

"Naomi's network is active. I'm tracking her. Need your help."

Dante stared at the message.

He typed a reply. "I'm in."

Sasha replied fast. "Good. I'll send you the details."

Dante put down the phone.

He'd tried to walk away. Tried to start over.

But the past had followed him. The ghosts had followed him.

And now, he had to confront them.

He grabbed his weapons and walked out the door.

---

Sasha's new base was a warehouse on the east side. Smaller than the factory. More secure.

Dante entered through the loading bay. Sasha was waiting with a group of operatives. Familiar faces. People he'd worked with before.

"Cross. Glad you could make it."

"Where is she?"

Sasha pulled up a map. "She's planning something. A big operation. Something that will cement her control."

"What kind of operation?"

"We don't know yet. But we have a source inside her organization. Someone who's feeding us information."

Dante's eyes narrowed. "Who?"

"Someone you trust." Sasha smiled. "Viktor."

Dante's blood went cold. "Viktor is working for you?"

"He's been working for me the whole time. He's been inside Naomi's organization since the beginning."

Dante shook his head. "You've been playing me this whole time."

"Not playing. Preparing." Sasha stepped closer. "I knew Naomi would make a move. I knew she'd try to take control. So I positioned Viktor to be there when she did."

Dante's jaw tightened. "And you didn't tell me?"

"I couldn't. If you'd known, you might have done something to compromise him." Sasha's eyes were steady. "You're too emotional, Cross. Too close to the situation."

Dante's hand moved to his weapon. "You used me."

"I used you the same way you've used everyone else. We're all tools, Cross. We all serve a purpose."

Dante stared at her. The woman who'd been manipulating him from the start. The woman who'd orchestrated everything.

He wanted to kill her. Wanted to end it.

But she was right. He'd been used. Just like everyone else.

He lowered his hand. "What's the plan?"

Sasha smiled. "We hit Naomi's operation tomorrow. Hard and fast. We take out her leadership. We destroy her assets. We end it."

"And Viktor?"

"He'll be on the inside. He'll open the doors for us."

Dante nodded. "What's my role?"

"Front line. You're the best operative I have. I need you to lead the assault."

Dante was silent for a moment. Then he nodded. "Fine."

Sasha smiled. "Good. Get some rest. Tomorrow's going to be a long day."

Dante left the warehouse.

The night was cold. The stars were bright.

He walked through the city. His mind was clear.

Naomi had to be stopped. Sasha had to be stopped. The network had to be destroyed.

He'd tried to walk away. Tried to start over.

But the past had followed him.

Now, he had to confront it.

When the past keeps pulling you back, how do you ever truly move forward?

But she didn't look away."Three years ago," she began, "I was recruited by the network. Not by choice. They had my family. They threatened to kill them if I didn't cooperate. I was young. Scared. I did what they asked."Dante's jaw tightened. "That's the same story you told me before.""Because it's true. But there's more." She took a shaky breath. "After my family died, I had nothing.
