The crack in the sky seemed to pulse like a diseased rhythm, a beat for the black heart pouring through and spilling darkness to earth. It shuddered under Alex's feet as the ground reacted from the invasion; the darkness seemed to pour forth, the abyss exerting some hold over him to draw him under its influence as it squeezed hard on his chest. But this time, he would not give in. Not now, not when the world was at the very brink of annihilation.

Helena's blade sliced through the air beside him, deadly accurate. Her eyes blazed with the same fire, the same urgency. They were running out of time. The monsters spilling out of the rift grew more vicious, more relentless. The twisted creatures, part nightmare, part darkness, were relentless, tearing through the ruins with savage hunger. They moved faster and struck harder, and their forms were shifting, warping, as though the abyss was molding them into something far worse than anything Alex had ever fought.
