Chapter 13: The First Move
The next morning, Boston woke beneath a sky the color of steel.
A cold wind moved between the buildings, carrying the smell of rain and the distant salt of the harbor. The streets were already crowded with commuters, black sedans, delivery trucks, taxis, and businessmen rushing beneath umbrellas.
Inside Montclair Tower, however, the atmosphere was far less ordinary.
The executive floor had been unusually quiet since eight in the morning.
People spoke in low voices.
Assistants carried folders from one office to another.
Security personnel stood near the elevators.
And every few minutes, another message appeared on the company's internal communication system.
Westbridge Capital has increased its position.
The logistics acquisition remains frozen.
Three additional shell companies have been identified.
Legal is reviewing the transactions.
Vireya stood behind the glass wall of her office, reading the latest report.
Her reflection stared back at her.
She wore a dark navy suit with a fitted white blouse, her hair pulled into a neat low ponytail. A thin silver watch rested against her wrist, and the engagement ring on her finger caught the morning light whenever she moved.
She had barely slept.
Not because of the acquisition.
Because of Evren.
The conversation at the harbor kept returning to her.
Together.
It had been such a simple word.
Yet somehow it felt more significant than the engagement itself.
A knock sounded.
She didn't turn.
"Come in."
The door opened.
Evren entered.
Today he wasn't wearing the formal black suit from the previous evening.
Instead, he wore a dark gray dress shirt with the sleeves folded neatly to his forearms and black trousers. His clothing was simple, almost understated, but everything fit perfectly. His dark hair was slightly untidy, as though he had run his fingers through it rather than spending time styling it.
Vireya looked at him.
"You came early."
"Seven minutes."
She checked the clock.
"You're counting?"
"I'm usually early."
She shook her head.
"Of course you are."
Evren walked toward the desk.
He placed a thin folder in front of her.
"What's this?"
"The three properties."
Vireya opened it.
Inside were photographs.
A warehouse.
A private road.
A stretch of industrial land.
She frowned.
"Where did you get these?"
"Public records."
"You did this before coming here?"
"Yes."
She looked through the pages.
"These aren't Montclair documents."
"No."
"Then how did you access them?"
"I didn't need access."
She raised an eyebrow.
"How?"
"County records."
Vireya stared at him.
Then she smiled faintly.
"You've been gone for five years, and somehow you learned how to investigate property records."
"Blackhaven had a library."
She looked up.
"You're joking."
"Mostly."
She almost laughed.
Almost.
Then her expression became serious again.
"What did you find?"
Evren pointed toward the first photograph.
"This warehouse was purchased eight months ago."
"By a shell company."
"Yes."
"Second property?"
"Six months ago."
"Third?"
"Four months."
Vireya frowned.
"Someone is buying them in sequence."
"Exactly."
She studied the dates.
"Why?"
Evren pulled a map from the folder and spread it across her desk.
The three properties appeared as red circles.
Vireya stared.
Then she understood.
"They form a line."
Evren nodded.
"And that line leads where?"
She followed it.
Her eyes stopped.
"The harbor."
"More specifically?"
Vireya leaned closer.
"Montclair's eastern logistics terminal."
Evren said nothing.
She looked at him.
"They're trying to create an alternative route into our terminal."
"Or around it."
Her eyes narrowed.
"Meaning they could bypass our security."
"Yes."
Vireya slowly folded her arms.
"That's not a business acquisition."
"No."
"It's infrastructure."
Evren nodded.
"Someone is building access."
"To what?"
"I don't know."
The room fell quiet.
Vireya looked at the map again.
Then she noticed something.
A fourth mark.
It wasn't part of the property records.
A small black circle had been drawn near the coastline.
She looked at Evren.
"You added this."
"Yes."
"What is it?"
"A maintenance tunnel."
Vireya's expression changed.
"How did you find that?"
"It appeared on an old municipal engineering map."
She stared at him.
"That tunnel was decommissioned twelve years ago."
"According to the city."
"According to the city?"
Evren nodded.
"Someone has been using it."
Vireya's skin prickled.
"How do you know?"
He looked at the photograph.
"Fresh tire tracks."
She studied the image.
At first she saw nothing.
Then she noticed the muddy marks near the entrance.
Two parallel lines.
Recent.
"What kind of vehicle?"
"Heavy."
"Truck?"
"Probably."
"Probably?"
Evren looked at her.
"I don't know yet."
She closed the folder.
"Then we find out."
He nodded.
"Tonight."
Vireya looked up.
"Tonight?"
"Less traffic."
"You're suggesting we investigate an abandoned tunnel at night?"
"Yes."
"With you?"
"Yes."
She stared at him.
"Do you hear yourself?"
"Usually."
She sighed.
"You really are impossible."
"So you've said."
A faint smile touched her lips.
Then she became serious.
"We can't just walk into an unknown tunnel."
"I know."
"Good."
"We'll have security."
"Better."
"And you."
She blinked.
"Me?"
"You're the person they are trying to manipulate."
Vireya stared at him.
"So you're saying I should come because they might be expecting me."
"Exactly."
She narrowed her eyes.
"That's not comforting."
"It wasn't meant to be."
The Montclair Boardroom
At ten thirty, the board met again.
This time, the atmosphere was more hostile.
Darius sat at the far side of the table.
Adrian sat beside him.
Lucien occupied the head position.
Vireya sat on his right.
Evren stood near the windows.
Several board members watched him nervously.
Richard Hale opened the meeting.
"We've received another development."
He pushed a report across the table.
"Westbridge has acquired two additional properties near our eastern terminal."
Lucien frowned.
"Two?"
"Yes."
Vireya looked toward Evren.
He didn't react.
Richard continued.
"They've also approached three of our shipping partners."
Darius leaned back.
"Perhaps they're simply expanding."
Vireya looked at him.
"With properties they don't need?"
Darius smiled.
"You seem very certain."
"I am."
"Then explain."
Vireya pushed the map toward the center of the table.
"They're creating a corridor."
Several executives leaned forward.
Darius looked at the map.
For the first time, his expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Vireya noticed.
So did Evren.
She continued.
"These properties aren't valuable individually. Their value comes from their location."
Richard nodded.
"That's what our analysts believe."
Vireya looked around the room.
"Then someone isn't trying to acquire our logistics company."
She tapped the map.
"They're trying to control access to it."
Darius folded his hands.
"And what do you suggest?"
"We investigate."
"Before accusing anyone?"
"Before allowing them to finish."
Darius smiled.
"You're becoming paranoid."
Vireya's gaze hardened.
"And you're becoming predictable."
A few board members exchanged glances.
Adrian shifted in his chair.
Darius's eyes narrowed.
"You should watch your tone."
"My tone isn't the problem."
Vireya leaned forward.
"The problem is that someone is spending hundreds of millions around our infrastructure and you're more interested in defending them than asking why."
Darius's jaw tightened.
"I am defending nothing."
Evren finally spoke.
"Then prove it."
The entire room turned toward him.
Darius stared.
Evren's voice remained calm.
"Give us access to your transaction records."
Darius laughed softly.
"My transaction records?"
"Yes."
"Why would I?"
"Because you approved the original negotiations."
Silence.
Vireya looked at her uncle.
Darius's smile disappeared.
"Careful, Evren."
Evren didn't blink.
"You're not the first person to say that."
Darius stood.
The chair scraped against the floor.
"You have no position in this company."
Evren looked at Lucien.
"He's right."
Lucien remained silent.
Evren turned back toward Darius.
"But I'm married to the woman you're trying to destroy."
Darius froze.
The words hung in the room.
Vireya felt something shift inside her.
It wasn't romance.
Not yet.
It was something else.
Trust.
Evren wasn't defending her because the families had arranged a marriage.
He was defending her because he had chosen to stand beside her.
Darius slowly sat down.
"Fine."
He smiled again.
"You want records?"
"Yes."
"You'll have them."
Vireya knew immediately.
Something was wrong.
Darius had agreed too easily.
She looked toward Evren.
He had noticed it too.
The Trap
Two hours later, an encrypted file arrived in Vireya's office.
The subject line read:
DARIUS MONTCLAIR — TRANSACTION HISTORY
She opened it.
The documents appeared legitimate.
Bank transfers.
Corporate agreements.
Property purchases.
Investment records.
Everything looked clean.
Too clean.
Evren stood behind her.
"Something's wrong."
Vireya looked at him.
"You think it's fabricated?"
"No."
"Then?"
"They wanted you to find it."
She stared at the screen.
"Why?"
"Because it's the wrong information."
She frowned.
He pointed toward one of the transaction dates.
"Look."
She followed his finger.
"Three weeks ago."
"Yes."
"This transfer was made to Westbridge."
"Correct."
Vireya looked at the amount.
"Eight million dollars."
Evren nodded.
She opened another file.
"There are three more."
"Yes."
"That's enough to prove Darius was working with them."
"Maybe."
She looked at him.
"You don't believe it."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because if Darius were actually working with Westbridge, he wouldn't leave this much evidence."
Vireya slowly understood.
"This is a frame."
"Exactly."
Her phone rang.
She answered.
"Vireya."
Lucien's voice came through.
"Come to my office."
"Now?"
"Now."
She ended the call.
Evren looked at her.
"Your father."
She nodded.
They left together.
Neither noticed the small red light on the security camera outside her office.
It blinked once.
Then again
Serena Vale
Across Boston, Officer Serena Vale sat inside a police vehicle parked outside Montclair Tower.
Rain tapped against the windshield.
A paper cup of coffee sat untouched beside her.
Her dark hair was tied into a practical ponytail, and she wore a navy police jacket over her uniform. Her notebook rested on her lap.
Across the page were three names.
Evren Valcero.
Vireya Montclair.
Blackhaven.
She stared at the last word.
She had spent the morning reviewing Evren's old records.
Five years.
Almost nothing.
Too little for a man who had supposedly committed a crime serious enough to disappear into Blackhaven.
She flipped another page.
His conviction records were incomplete.
Several witness statements had been sealed.
One evidence file had been transferred twice.
And the officer who originally handled the case had retired unexpectedly.
Serena frowned.
"That's convenient."
Her phone rang.
She answered.
"Vale."
A detective's voice came through.
"Serena, we found something."
"What?"
"Old Blackhaven transport records."
Her eyes sharpened.
"Where?"
"Federal archive."
"What's unusual?"
"His transfer date."
She waited.
"The paperwork says Evren Valcero was transferred to Blackhaven on September fourteenth."
Serena frowned.
"And?"
"The prison's intake system says he arrived September twelfth."
She sat upright.
"Two days."
"Exactly."
"Where was he for those two days?"
"We don't know."
Serena stared through the windshield.
Rainwater slid down the glass.
"Find out."
"Serena—"
"I said find out."
She ended the call.
Her eyes returned to the tower.
And at that exact moment, she saw Evren step outside.
He was walking beside Vireya.
Serena watched them enter a black SUV.
She reached for her keys.
Then stopped.
She wasn't sure why.
Something about the way Evren moved had changed.
He wasn't looking around randomly.
He was checking the street.
The buildings.
The cars.
The reflections.
Then—
His eyes suddenly turned toward her vehicle.
Serena froze.
They were too far apart.
The windshield was covered with rain.
There was no reason he should have seen her.
Yet Evren looked directly at her.
For three seconds.
Then he entered the SUV.
Serena lowered her notebook.
"Who are you?"
The Eastern Terminal
Night fell over Boston.
The Montclair eastern logistics terminal was nearly empty.
Rows of shipping containers stood beneath massive industrial lights. Their metal surfaces glistened with rain, while cranes loomed overhead like skeletal giants.
The smell of diesel, saltwater, wet concrete, and rust filled the air.
Vireya stepped out of the SUV.
She wore a black coat over a fitted suit.
Evren stepped out behind her.
Two Montclair security officers followed.
Vireya looked toward the dark coastline.
"The tunnel is over there?"
Evren nodded.
"Three hundred meters."
They walked.
Their shoes struck wet pavement.
The wind grew stronger as they approached the abandoned section of the terminal.
A rusted metal gate blocked the path.
Evren stopped.
Vireya looked at him.
"What?"
He raised one hand.
Everyone stopped.
The wind continued blowing.
Water dripped from a nearby pipe.
Somewhere in the darkness—
A metallic sound.
Clang.
Vireya's breath caught.
One of the guards reached for his weapon.
Evren shook his head.
"Wait."
Another sound.
Clang.
Then silence.
Evren looked toward the tunnel.
"Someone is inside."
Vireya whispered:
"How many?"
He listened.
His expression changed.
"Three."
One guard frowned.
"I don't hear anything."
Evren looked at him.
"You will."
A second later—
Footsteps echoed from inside the tunnel.
Three sets.
Slow.
Measured.
Approaching.
Vireya's pulse accelerated.
Evren stepped slightly in front of her.
The first shadow appeared.
Then another.
Then another.
A man emerged from the darkness.
Black jacket.
Dark gloves.
Face partially covered.
He looked directly at Evren.
And smiled.
"Been a long time."
Evren's expression became completely still.
Vireya looked between them.
"You know him?"
Evren didn't answer.
The stranger slowly removed his glove.
A scar ran from his wrist toward his elbow.
Then he said something that made the cold air seem even colder.
"Cassius told me you'd come back eventually."
Evren's eyes hardened.
The man's smile widened.
"But he never told me you'd bring a Montclair."
Behind them, the tunnel lights suddenly shut off.
Darkness swallowed the terminal.
And somewhere inside the blackness—
someone locked the gate.
Click.
