Chapter 03

Kael rode through the rain with Theo sitting in front of him on the motorcycle. The boy held the handlebars tightly and kept looking back at his father’s face.

“Daddy, why are we going this way? School is the other direction.”

“I know,” Kael said. “We’re not going home tonight.”

Theo stayed quiet after that. He trusted his father.

Kael found a cheap motel on the edge of the city. He paid cash for two nights and carried Theo inside. The room smelled of old soap and rain. Kael locked the door, checked the windows, and pulled the curtains shut.

Theo sat on the bed and hugged his backpack.

“Is Mom coming?”

Kael sat beside him. “Not tonight. Just you and me.”

Theo nodded slowly. He did not ask more questions. That hurt Kael more than if the boy had cried.

While Theo watched cartoons with the volume low, Kael opened the system in his mind.

Kael’s jaw tightened.

He still had the picture of Dariac standing in front of him when he was twelve, stopping a man from hitting him. That memory was one of the few good ones left.

He stared at Theo’s hand. The small silver ring on the boy’s finger looked ordinary. In the first life no one had ever mentioned it. Now it was the reason people wanted them both dead.

Kael made the choice.

“Take the mission.”

A cold emptiness opened in his chest. The memory of Dariac shielding him faded until it was gone. For a moment Kael felt younger and more alone than before. He pushed the feeling down hard.

New strength settled behind his eyes. The dark corners of the room became clear.

He stood up.

“Theo, lock the door after I leave. Do not open it for anyone except me. Not even Mom. Not even Uncle Dariac. Understand?”

Theo’s eyes grew wide. “Where are you going?”

“To fix something. I’ll be back before morning.”

Kael kissed the top of his son’s head and left.

The club was louder than usual. Rain still fell outside. Kael slipped in through the staff entrance again. He moved like a shadow up the back stairs.

Dariac’s office door was locked. Kael used a thin piece of metal from his pocket and opened it in seconds. The room was empty. The safe sat behind a painting of a lion.

Kael’s new night vision showed the numbers clearly even in the dark. He remembered the combination from years ago when he had still trusted the man. The safe clicked open.

Inside lay money, papers, and a small black box.

Kael opened the box.

A second silver ring rested on dark cloth. It was the exact match to Theo’s.

A soft voice spoke from the doorway.

“I knew you would come for it.”

Kael turned.

Dariac stood there with two men behind him. Both held guns.

Dariac smiled the same warm smile he used when Kael was a boy.

“Put the ring down, nephew. We can still talk like family.”

The Truth Echo skill rang hard in Kael’s ears. The word “family” sounded false and sharp.

Kael closed his fist around the ring.

“You ordered the hit on me and Theo.”

Dariac’s smile did not change. “I ordered a clean removal. You were never supposed to survive the first time.”

One of the men stepped forward.

Kael moved first.

He threw the black box at the nearest gunman’s face and closed the distance in two steps. His new body was faster than it had any right to be. He twisted the man’s arm until the gun dropped, then slammed the second man’s head against the wall.

Dariac pulled a small pistol from under his jacket.

Kael was already on him. He grabbed Dariac’s wrist and forced the gun upward. A shot went into the ceiling. Plaster dust fell.

Kael pushed Dariac against the desk.

“Why the rings?” he asked, voice low.

Dariac’s eyes finally lost the fake warmth.

“Because your bloodline should have stayed buried. The rings are keys. Together they open something that should never be opened. Your father hid them. I found one. The boy has the other. Once both of you are gone, the keys belong to me.”

Kael’s grip tightened.

A new system message flashed.

[Warning: Outside force detected.]

[Someone else is watching this timeline.]

Before Kael could ask what that meant, the window behind Dariac exploded inward.

Glass and rain flew into the room. A dark figure landed on the carpet and rolled once. When the figure stood, Kael saw a woman in a black coat. Her hair was wet and red.

She looked straight at Kael.

“You took the ring too early,” she said. “Now they know you remember.”

Dariac’s face went white.

“You…”

The woman raised one hand. A thin line of light cut across the room and knocked both remaining gunmen unconscious without a sound.

She turned back to Kael.

“My name is Seren. In the last timeline you died protecting the boy. This time you lived. That means the people who want the rings will come faster and harder.”

Kael kept the ring in his fist and pulled Theo’s matching ring from his pocket so she could see both.

“Who are they?”

Seren’s eyes moved to the rings, then to Kael’s face.

“They are the ones who killed your father. And they already know you are awake.”

Outside the broken window, several black cars turned onto the street below and stopped in front of the club.

Seren looked at Kael one more time.

“If you want Theo to see another sunrise, come with me now. Or stay and die again.”

The system spoke quietly in Kael’s mind.

[New choice detected.]

[Path A: Trust the stranger.]

[Path B: Fight alone.]

[Warning: Both paths carry a heavy memory cost.]

Kael looked at the rings in his hand, then at the cars outside, then at the red-haired woman who somehow knew about the first timeline.

He made his decision.
