Betrayed Son-in-Law: System Awakening

Chapter 04

Kael looked at the black cars lining up outside the club. Then he looked at Seren.

“I’ll go with you,” he said. “But if you touch my son, I will kill you.”

Seren gave a short nod. “Fair.”

Dariac tried to stand. Kael hit him once in the side of the neck. The older man dropped and stayed down.

Kael grabbed the second ring and followed Seren to the broken window. She jumped first. He followed. They landed on the wet street and ran between the parked cars before the new arrivals could get out.

Shouts rose behind them. Gunshots cracked the air. Bullets hit the wall where Kael had been a second earlier.

Seren led him down a narrow alley and into a waiting dark van. The engine was already running. She climbed into the driver’s seat and pulled away hard.

Kael sat in the back, both rings clenched in his fist.

“Where are we going?” he asked.

“Somewhere they cannot track the rings for a few hours,” Seren answered. “After that, nowhere is safe.”

The system spoke in Kael’s mind.

[Path chosen: Trust the stranger.]

[Memory cost applied.]

[One clear memory of your father’s face has been erased.]

Kael’s chest went tight. He tried to picture his father’s eyes. The picture was gone. Only a blank space remained. He pressed his knuckles against his forehead and forced the pain down.

“What did they take?” Seren asked, watching him in the mirror.

“A memory,” Kael said. “Of my father.”

Seren’s hands tightened on the wheel. “The system always takes something that matters. That is how it keeps you moving.”

They drove in silence for several minutes. Rain slid down the windows.

Kael spoke first. “You knew I died in the first timeline. How?”

“I was there,” Seren said. “Not in the bus. But I saw the aftermath. I saw what the rings did when both of you were gone. I came back the hard way to stop it from happening again.”

“What do the rings open?”

Seren did not answer right away. She turned onto a quieter road.

“They open a door that your father sealed with his own blood. On the other side is something that should stay locked. Dariac and the people above him want that door open. They believe it will make them more than human.”

Kael looked at the two silver rings. They felt heavier than metal.

“And Theo?”

“The rings only work if they stay with someone of the Elzeus bloodline. That is why they needed the boy dead. A living heir can close the door again. A dead one cannot.”

Kael’s mind went straight to the motel.

“Turn around. We have to get Theo.”

Seren already was. “I sent someone the moment you agreed to come with me. Your son should be safe.”

Kael did not relax. He would believe it only when he saw Theo with his own eyes.

They reached the motel twenty minutes later. The lights in their room were on. Kael jumped out before the van fully stopped and ran to the door.

He knocked the special way he had taught Theo.

The door opened.

Theo stood there, eyes wide. Behind him stood a tall man with a scar across his left eyebrow. The man held a quiet stance that said he knew how to fight.

“Daddy!” Theo ran forward and wrapped his arms around Kael’s waist.

Kael held him tightly and looked at the scarred man.

“Who are you?”

“Name’s Rook,” the man said. “Seren’s people. The boy is unharmed.”

Kael checked Theo quickly. No new bruises. No fear beyond what a child should feel after a strange night. He let out a slow breath.

Seren stepped inside and closed the door.

“We cannot stay here,” she said. “Dariac will recover soon. The people in those black cars are worse than him. They already know both rings are together.”

Kael sat Theo on the bed and knelt in front of him.

“Listen to me. We are going somewhere safer. You stay close to me no matter what. Understand?”

Theo nodded. “Are the bad men still coming?”

“Yes,” Kael said. “But I will not let them near you.”

The system flashed a new message.

[Urgent mission available.]

[Mission: Reach the old Elzeus warehouse before sunrise.]

[Reward: Temporary shield that blocks one killing blow.]

[Cost: One memory of Theo’s first steps will be erased.]

Kael stared at the words. That memory was one of the brightest he still had. Theo’s small hands holding the table. The proud smile on the boy’s face.

He looked at his son’s real face now.

“I’ll take it,” he whispered.

The warm memory left him. For a second the room felt colder. He could no longer see Theo’s first steps in his mind. Only the knowledge that it had happened remained.

New strength settled under his skin like a thin layer of armor.

Seren watched him carefully. “The system is speeding up. That means the other side is also moving faster.”

Kael stood. “Then we move now.”

They left the motel in the dark van. Rook drove. Seren sat in the front. Kael kept Theo close in the back, both rings in his pocket.

The city lights grew thinner as they headed toward the industrial edge of town. Old warehouses stood like broken teeth against the night sky.

Seren pointed to a large building with faded letters. “That one. Your father hid the real seal there.”

Kael felt the rings grow warm against his leg.

Suddenly the system screamed in his head.

[Warning: Hostile system detected nearby.]

[Another host is active in this area.]

Kael’s blood went cold.

“Stop the van,” he said.

Rook hit the brakes.

Outside the warehouse, a single figure stood under a broken streetlight. The person raised one hand. A faint blue light glowed around their fingers.

Seren’s voice dropped.

“That is not one of Dariac’s men.”

The figure turned its head toward the van.

Kael saw the face clearly for the first time.

It was Lila.

But her eyes were wrong. Cold. Empty of everything he had ever known.

And on her finger sat a third ring that should not exist.

The system spoke one final time.

[New enemy identified.]

[Host name: Lila Voss.]

[Her system has no memory cost.]

[She has already chosen her side.]
