Deal with the system

Just as he thought he had fallen asleep, the annoying ringtone he created blasted through the silence of the night.

He groaned In his sleep. Who in the right mind would be calling by this time of the night? He shifted in bed as he lay comfortably ignoring the call. It could wait till morning. Then it went silent.

Grrrrr… rrr… rrr…

Oh C’mon! He cursed as he tightened his pillows over his ears to block out the noise. After it rang and he did not pick it stopped again.

Just when he thought he was finally drifting off the annoying sound came again. He grunted in annoyance. He swore not to pick the damn call. The person could go to hell.

Then came the notification sounds. They came back to back forming a symphony.

He flipped his eyes open as he stared at the roof of the van. His gaze shifted to the table where his phone rested. As much as he wanted his glare to turn into molten lava and melt the phone away, it could not.

His hard glare did not stop it from ringing. He decided to put it on silent or better still, switch it off. He threw the covers off his body and stood up.

Walking towards the phone, he murmured curses at who ever was blowing up his phone.

Caroline

All the messages were from her, all the calls too.

Oh well, there goes his plan to sleep her party out. He had to face her tonight. He braced himself for her yelling.

He dialed her number and she picked right on the first ring.

“Where the hell are you Ajax?” she started in a very icy cold voice.

It sent shivers down his spine. He felt it in his guts how much trouble he was in.

“I.. I’m home” he stuttered. His heart began to race.

“Get your ass here bearing gifts” she gritted.

He could already picture her face. Her lips twisted in a scowl, her eyes sending dark glares. Her mascara probably smudged making her look all the more like a villain.

He tried to sound normal, like her tone did not affect him.

”I.. I’ll be on my …. My way Care” he stuttered instead.

Damn it!

“I’ll be there soon” he repeated. This time he said it smoothly.

Then the line went dead.

He threw his self on his bed and sighed, his shoulders falling back and relaxing. All the tension he felt while answering Caroline seeped away.

He had no idea where he would get gift for Caroline at this time. He had no cash on him. He sighed. Caroline was right. He was broke.

I HAVE AN OFFER FOR YOU AJAX

He shrieked at the sudden sound of the voice in his head.

“Could you just stop! Try being subtle before you give me a bloody heart attack!”

SORRY.

“So you said you had an offer, what's it?” Ajax asked after a while.

I WILL GIVE YOU ONE MILLION DOLLARS…

Wait what?

.. BUT YOU HAVE TO SPEND IT WITHIN 24 HOURS OR THERE WOULD BE CONSEQUENCES

“Okay” Ajax said chuckling. “First of all. You are in my head. You have no cash and even if you do, it will be invisible just like you….” He paused “...And even if it's invisible and I get thisone million dollars and I don't spend it, which u know I will, what are the consequences?

YOU WILL LOSE ONE PRECIOUS THING IN YOU LIFE.

Ajax fell into a fit of laughter. This was absurd. First he gets voices in his head that helps him fight and defend himself, then the voice offers a deal to give him a million dollars. His Job was to just spend it or else he loses something precious. In what fantasy world does that happen!

‘I must have hit my head really hard when I fought with those guys and it's messing with my head’ he thought.

He felt he must be having a concussion. Criminals are not even paid up to a million dollar to do crazy shits but here he is, being offered a million dollars to just spend.

Okay. Since his brain was playing games with him, he decided to tag along in the play. Besides, he was poor and broke just as Caroline pointed out.

He was tired of being that way. And if this voices in his head or whatever it is that's in his brain could order to help, Why would he decline the offer?

Deal

Just as he had muttered the word D-E-A-L, his phone dinged.

“Shit” he cursed. He had forgotten to put it in silence earlier.

He flipped the screen open, expecting to see another message from Caroline.

“Woah!” he exclaimed as his eyes widened in shock when he saw the alert. He had just received $1,000,000 from an anonymous person. Yup, Unknown(Anonymous). That was the name of the sender.

He could not believe his eyes. The surprise suddenly turned into laughter. He began to laugh hysterically. He laughed for a long while.

After laughing to his satisfaction, he decided to check if this was true, it could be a fake alert or something.

He took his coat from the rack, his wallet with his credit card and phone and left quietly.

With hands placed in the pockets of his coat, heart beating and at the same time fluttering in his chest, eyes staring into the darkness of the night, with dim lights from the porches of people's houses and street lights lighting up the way, he walked through different streets in search for a store he could get something.

He sighted a bike that rested on the wall of a building. It would not be that bad if he borrowed it to drive around and search for a shop, maybe outside town.

He looked around, no one was in sight. He picked the lock of the bicycle and drove off.
