The night had teeth. Cold wind howled across the charred plains, carrying the stench of blood and ash. Fires still smoldered in the distance, painting the horizon with sickly orange light. Eldrin stood at the edge of camp, staring toward the ruins of the capital where shadows writhed unnaturally against the moonlight.

The warlord was moving.

Eldrin’s grip tightened on his sword hilt. The curse inside him pulsed, whispering promises of strength if he let it loose. But he remembered the look in his soldiers’ eyes the fear, the distrust. One slip, and he would become the very monster he swore to destroy.

Behind him, the camp stirred. Men patched armor with trembling hands, women sharpened blades dulled by too many battles. The air was thick with dread, yet also with defiance. They all knew what was coming.

Isolde approached quietly, her cloak brushing the frost-kissed grass. Her face was pale, her eyes sharp with a mixture of sorrow and steel. She stopped beside him, close enough to touc

The battlefield was a storm. Steel clashed, arrows screamed, and blood turned the trampled earth into mud. But within the chaos, all eyes were drawn to a single thread of fate where Eldrin stood, and where the warlord bore down upon him.The warlord’s horse was a beast of shadow, its hooves striking fire with every step, its mane trailing smoke. The black spear in his grip pulsed with an unholy rhythm, as though it beat with a heart not its own.Eldrin pushed through the melee, cutting Riders aside with brutal efficiency. The shadow in his veins surged, eager, whispering: Take it. Take his power. Tear him open. Feed.He clenched his teeth, sweat mixing with blood on his brow. “Not yours,” he muttered through gritted teeth. “Not yet.”The warlord saw him coming and laughed, the sound rolling over the din of war like a drum of doom. “Good,” he boomed, lowering his spear. “Face me. Show them what the curse has made of you!”Isolde shouted something behind him, but her voice was lost in t

  • Chapter 115 – The Blood Banner

The rider’s warning still rang in the air when Kael barked orders, his voice cutting through the rising panic like a whip. “Shields up! Form ranks! Get the wounded moved to the rear, now!”The men moved, though their movements carried hesitation, glances darting not just toward the horizon but toward Eldrin. Every command Kael gave was obeyed, but Eldrin’s silence lingered like a storm waiting to break.Eldrin stood motionless, his hand tightening on his sword. The shadows at his feet curled and twisted, feeding off his turmoil. He could feel the abyss calling, whispering, promising strength enough to crush the Riders before they even reached the camp. But at what cost?He looked toward Isolde. She stood apart, helping the rider to his feet, her face set in grim lines. She did not so much as glance at Eldrin, though once, not long ago, her eyes had sought his in every battle.Kael noticed the distance too. The old general’s gaze lingered between them before he muttered under his breat

  • Chapter 114 – Ashes Between Us

Dawn crept over the battlefield like a thief, gray light stealing across broken ground still slick with blood. Smoke curled lazily from shattered wagons, and the stench of iron hung thick in the air. What had once been an army’s proud encampment was now a graveyard of silence.Eldrin stood apart from the others, his shadow stretching long across the ash. He had fought through the night until the abyss itself bled into the mortal realm, until every scream blurred into one endless howl. His blade dripped black ichor that wasn’t entirely mortal blood. His body still ached from the pull of the curse, from the way it had tried to claim him again with every strike. But none of that weighed heavier than the eyes on his back. They were not the eyes of enemies. They were his own soldiers. His own allies. And their gazes held no triumph only fear, suspicion… and blame.Behind him, Isolde knelt by the charred remnants of what had once been her brother’s banner. The crimson crest was torn and bla

  • Chapter 113 – Blades in the Dark

The night settled heavy over the war-camp, thick with smoke and silence. Fires guttered low, their light smothered by the veil of mist that crept down from the jagged peaks. Every soldier felt it the weight of betrayal pressing down on their shoulders. Shade’s escape had not only cost them lives, it had carved suspicion into every heart.Eldrin stood at the edge of the camp, his cloak drawn tight against the chill. The curse stirred faintly under his skin, black lines pulsing like veins of molten coal. He clenched his fist and forced the whispers down. Not now. He could not falter now.Behind him, the camp murmured. Voices carried in sharp bursts: accusations, fears, doubts. He caught the words traitor and cursed more times than he cared to count.“Let them speak,” Kael growled at his side. The old general’s armor was still dented from the last clash, his scarred face twisted with bitterness. “Their tongues wag because their spines are weak. Soldiers who truly believe in victory don’t

  • Chapter 112 – The Blood Price

The camp reeked of smoke and sweat, the lingering stench of shadow still clinging to the soldiers’ armor. They had survived the abyss, survived Shade’s unleashed horror, but survival came at a cost. Too many men lay silent under torn banners, their blood soaking the dirt, their names already being swallowed by the night. And Shade he was gone.Eldrin paced along the broken perimeter, his gauntleted hands still trembling. He had struck at the creature with everything the abyss had given him, and still, it had slipped away into the storm. The shadows obeyed Shade like wolves returning to their master. Eldrin could feel it the enemy’s tether was growing stronger. The warlord’s plans were in motion.Yet it wasn’t Shade’s escape alone that burned his thoughts. It was the silence in his own ranks.Men who had once cheered his name now stared at him with unease. Some whispered of the curse in his veins, the black fire that had crackled along his blade. Some whispered louder that perhaps Shad

  • Chapter 111 – The Knife in the Dark

Night draped the camp in silence, broken only by the crackle of dying fires and the restless shuffle of soldiers who could not sleep. The shadow of the coming war pressed on every man’s chest like a weight too heavy to bear.Inside the command tent, a single lamp burned low, its flame flickering against maps scattered across the table. Eldrin leaned over them, jaw tight, his scarred hand tracing the red lines drawn toward the capital’s ruins. The Riders were moving faster than expected. Too fast.“They want us exhausted before the true clash,” Eldrin muttered under his breath.Kael stood nearby, arms crossed. The veteran’s good eye gleamed in the dim light, his body rigid like a drawn bowstring. “We hold formation. Panic is the only blade that cuts deeper than steel. If the men break before battle, the warlord has already won.”Eldrin nodded, though his mind was elsewhere. His thoughts lingered on Isolde on the look in her eyes when she swore she would stand by him, no matter the abys
