The final was a formality. Selka Dray, the last of Mael's champions, had lost her power with the rest. She fought bravely and well, but she was only a woman with a sword now, and Ren beat her in ninety seconds without drawing blood.
The crowd screamed his name. He stood in the center of the arena, sweating and half deaf, while the herald unrolled a scroll and announced, in a voice that cracked with astonishment, that the champion of the three hundred and twelfth Grand Tournament was Ren Calder of Veyra. A golden cup was placed in his hands. A laurel crown was set on his head. The Treasurer himself descended from the balcony, smiling like a man at a funeral. "Champion," said Corvane Mael. His voice carried through the arena. "By ancient right, you may ask a boon. What do you wish?" Ren looked at the pit, now empty. At Hesk in the stands, free. At the huge, gray-blue banner of the Treasury hanging above the north wall. "I want the Weighing Floors closed," he said. "All of them. Today." A ripple of shock went through the crowd. Mael's smile did not change. "That is a very large request." "It's a very large wrong." "It is not within the power of any single man." "You're the Treasurer." "I am," said Mael pleasantly. "Which is why I know exactly what it would cost." He turned to the crowd, spreading his hands. "Citizens! The champion asks us to close the Weighing Floors. Shall we tell him what that means?" A hum rose from the stands, unsure. "It means no more medicine for the sick. No more bread for the hungry. No more coats for the cold." Mael's voice was warm and reasonable. "It means that every poor man in Calloway is told, tomorrow morning, that his children may starve. Is that what you want, young man?" Ren felt the crowd shift against him, uncertain, afraid. "That isn't what I'm asking," he said. "I'm asking you to stop taking their lives to give them bread." "But the lives are theirs to sell." "Not if there's no choice." A murmur of agreement rippled through the cheap seats. Mael's smile thinned. "The boon is denied," he said gently. "It violates the Honest Weights. A fair exchange cannot be abolished by a boon. I am sorry, Champion. You may ask something else." Ren stared at him. "Then free every Tribute in your pit," he said. "Every one of them. And Ilyra Vance, and every holder you've leashed." "Ah." Mael lowered his voice, so that only the champion could hear. "That, I am afraid, is not a boon. That is a confession." He lifted a hand. From every entrance of the arena, gray-blue figures poured onto the sand. Auditors, hundreds of them, in bronze masks, with blades drawn. The crowd screamed and scattered. In the stands, Dara was on her feet. Hesk was pulling Pip behind her. Granna Oss stood on her bench, shaking her net-mending needle like a sword. "By order of the Treasury," said Mael, "the holder known as Ren Calder is arrested for harboring an unregistered Ledger, tampering with tournament rites, and the theft of Treasury property." "You can't," said Ren. "I'm the champion." "You are a criminal, my boy." Mael sighed. "I did warn you that tradition has limits." Bronze masks closed in from every side. Ren drew a sword, and a dozen blades touched his throat. In the stands, a clash of steel rang out as Dara and Hesk fought their way down the steps. A cry went up. A thin, silver-haired figure watched from the highest tier, hands folded, expression unreadable. Voss. He did not move. He did not blink. He only inclined his head, very slightly, as if acknowledging a debt that had come due. The Ledger flickered in Ren's vision, and then, with a soundless snap, went dark. [ LEDGER LOCKED. ] [ HOLDER IN CUSTODY. ] A heavy hand came down on his shoulder. Cold iron closed around his wrists. The last thing he heard, before the hood went over his head, was the roar of forty thousand voices, shouting not for the Treasurer, and not for the Auditors, but for him.Latest Chapter

Chapter 24: Torvald the Unbroken
The semifinal was not a fair fight.Torvald Brandt, called the Unbroken, was the Treasurer's greatest champion. He was nearly seven feet tall, built like a siege tower, and he had never lost a match in eleven years. His armor was black iron. His weapon was a double-headed axe the size of a door. Every thread of silver in the arena seemed to wind toward him, thick as ropes, glowing like a stormcloud.Ren watched him demolish a man in the quarterfinal in nine seconds."Four of those threads are Ilyra's," he told Dara in the tunnel. "The rest come from other holders I can't see. Other Lenders. Maybe in other cities.""How many does he have?""Too many."He lifted his eyes. Hesk was seated in the first row of the stands, no longer chained, sitting between Granna Oss and Pip. She gave him a thumbs up, solemnly, as if they were children at a school fair.He walked onto the sand.Torvald lowered his axe and studied him. His voice, when he spoke, was thin and polite and unexpectedly gentle."
Chapter 23: Hesk
The bracket drew Ren against Hesk in the round of sixteen. He read the name on the herald's scroll twice before he understood it. Then he looked up at the balcony, and the Treasurer raised his teacup, smiling, and Ren knew that someone had done this on purpose."Voss," he muttered."What?" said Dara. She had slipped into the fighters' passage with a forged pass. Her face was pale. "Ren, you can't. You can't. She's your friend.""I know.""If you beat her, they'll keep her in the pit. If you lose, they take the Ledger.""I know.""Then what are you going to do?""I don't know," he said.He walked onto the sand.Hesk was already waiting. They had given her a sword and a shield and a collar of pale iron. It sat around her neck like a dog's. In the sunlight, it gave off a thin, wavering shimmer. A thread ran from it, thicker than the others, up into the air toward the balcony."Ren," she said. Her voice was low and flat and entirely calm. "Don't hold back.""Hesk...""They're listening. I
Chapter 22: Silver Threads
By the third round, Ren had begun to see the threads. He noticed them first on Selka Dray, the Treasurer's champion in the second bracket. She was a slender woman with a pale braid and a long, thin blade that moved like a snake. Ren watched her fight a mercenary from the bleachers, and something nagged at him. Her movements were too fast. Too clean. Nobody trained that hard. Then the light caught her wrist, and he saw it.A single silver thread, thinner than hair, ran from her arm up into the air, curving high over the arena toward the north balcony. He went still."What?" said Dara, beside him. She had slipped down to the fighters' rail to share a bowl of noodles. "You look sick.""Look at Selka's hand. Does she have anything on it?"Dara squinted. "No.""Nothing silver?""Ren. No."He breathed out. Of course she couldn't see it. This was the Ledger's gift, or curse. The silver threads were only visible to holders. On the sand, Selka's blade licked out. Her opponent fell with a clean
Chapter 21: The Arena Gate
The Grand Arena of Calloway sat at the edge of the city, carved into the cliff like a great stone bowl. Its tiers rose sixty rows high and held forty thousand people. On the morning of the first fight, every seat was full.Ren waited in the dark passage beneath the stands, listening to the crowd above him. The noise came down through the stone like thunder in the next valley. He had been given a number, a leather vest two sizes too small, and a plain iron sword that smelled of oil. Around him stood sixty-three other entrants. Dockhands. Mercenaries. A few cold, silent men whose eyes passed over everyone as though counting. Not one of them looked at the others.Dara had managed one last word with him at the gate. "Don't die," she had said. "Don't be a hero. Don't do anything I wouldn't do.""What wouldn't you do?""I'll tell you after you win."The iron gate ahead of him swung open, and the light hit his face. The arena floor was white sand raked into perfect lines. A single raised bal
Chapter 20: A Cup of Tea with the Devil
Voss was waiting for him in a cafe on the harbor road.Ren had not expected that. He had imagined a throne room, or an arena, or a shadowed alley with guards in every doorway. Instead, he found a bright little shop with blue shutters, a chalkboard menu, and a single table by the window where a thin man in a gray coat sat drinking tea.Halvane Voss looked up and smiled."Mr. Calder. How good of you to come. Please, sit. The honey cake is quite remarkable."Ren did not sit. "Where is she?""Ms. Hesk is perfectly comfortable. She is in a private suite, eating well and refusing to speak to anyone." Voss sipped. "Remarkable woman. I rather like her.""You took her to get to me.""I did, and I regret the means." He set the cup down. He looked older than Ren remembered, thin and gray, his collar slightly too loose. A faint blue line still ran under the skin of his throat. "But I could think of no other way to bring you here without Lord Mael learning of it.""You work for Mael.""I advise hi
