The morning sun over the High Merchant District was filtered through towering stained-glass skylights set into the district's soaring marble arches.

Unlike the soot-caked alleys of the Iron Market, the high district smelled of floral incense, refined ether oils, and fresh parchment. Soaring white-stone estates lined the terraced avenues, guarded by private security patrols wearing polished silver plate armor.

The party stood before the wrought-iron gates of the Falcrest Estate, a sprawling three-story manor built from pale alabaster stone.

Gideon adjusted the high collar of his dark cloak, concealing his silver rapier. His blue eyes Scanned the two guards standing at the gatehouse, both holding enchanted halberds humming with Tier 2 lightning ether.

"Corvus's estate is heavily fortified," Gideon noted. "The defensive runes on those outer gates are calibrated for high-tier containment."

"He's a merchant lord with bitter trade rivals," Noël replied. "Extravagant paranoia is a job requirement."

Elara kept her hand near her Radiant Lancer spear under her travel cloak, while Lyra held her leather tool pouch close to her waist.

Noël stepped up to the iron gate.

The head gatekeeper, a broad-shouldered man with a scarred jaw, stepped forward, resting his hand on his halberd shaft. "State your business."

"Auxiliary Retainers Voss, Vance, Thorne, and Elara," Noël said, presenting the temporary transit scroll Lord Corvus had issued at the lower checkpoint. "We have an appointment with Lord Corvus regarding the preliminary qualification manifest."

The gatekeeper ran a small blue crystal over the scroll. The ledger illuminated with pale green light.

"You're thirty minutes early," the gatekeeper said, his voice flat. "Follow the inner courtyard path. Do not stray into the side arcades."

The heavy wrought-iron gates swung open with a dull mechanical hum.

They walked through the manicured stone courtyard, where polished marble fountains circulated clear ether-water. Standing near the grand entrance Steps of the manor was Lord Corvus Falcrest, dressed in a tailored velvet coat trimmed with silver embroidery.

Beside him stood a tall, arrogant young man in brilliant gold-and-white armor, Julian Falcrest, the eldest son of House Falcrest and a Tier 1 Peak cadet from the Capital Academy.

"Lord Corvus," Noël called out, Stopping five paces before the stone steps.

Corvus turned around, his sharp grey eyes Sweeping over the party. A slight, satisfied nod touched his lips. "You're punctual, Voss. And your artificer's repair work on my carriage held through the night."

Julian Falcrest folded his arms across his golden breastplate, looking down at them with undisguised disdain. "Father, are these the wasteland vagrants you mentioned? They look like they barely survived the lower drainage pits."

"They cleared an Iron Viper vanguard wall in Sector Three and passed the lower gatehouse without a single alarm," Corvus replied coldly, cutting his son off. "Results matter more than pedigree, Julian."

Julian sneered, his fingers tapping the hilt of his gilded broadsword. "The Regional Qualification Trial isn't a street brawl in the ruins. It's a structured competition between the premier cadet houses of the Capital."

"To be exact," Noël interrupted flatly, "it is a battle for resource allocation."

Julian's eyes narrowed. "What did you say?"

"The Trade Council allocates three primary mining leases based on preliminary trial rankings," Noël said, Stepping forward. "House Falcrest lost sixty percent of its outer trade routes to the Blood-Hound Syndicate last month. If you fail to secure a top-three placement in tomorrow's qualification, your house loses its seat on the Council."

Silence descended upon the courtyard.

Gideon didn't flinch. Elara remained stoic.

Lord Corvus stared at Noël, his grey eyes flashing with genuine surprise. The financial plight of House Falcrest was a closely guarded secret known only to executive family members.

"How do you know our lease status?" Corvus asked, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register.

"Information asymmetry," Noël replied. "Your trade rival, Marquess Sterling, has already registered two elite mercenary teams from the Blood-Hound Guild under his secondary family banner. Their objective in tomorrow's trial isn't just to win. It's to eliminate House Falcrest's entrants inside the trial grounds."

Julian's face flushed with anger. "Nonsense! The Blood-Hounds are banned from academy grounds!"

"They aren't entering as Blood-Hounds," Gideon added, Stepping up beside Noël. "They are entering as Sterling retainers. The Registrar's office cleared their papers yesterday afternoon."

Corvus turned to his son. "Is this true?"

Julian hesitated, his arrogant composure faltering slightly. "Our intelligence scouts reported Sterling hired extra guards, but..."

Corvus let out a long, cold breath. He looked back at Noël, his sharp eyes evaluating his trench coat, his calm posture, and the quiet discipline of his team.

"You knew all of this before stepping into my courtyard," Corvus said.

"That is why we are here," Noël replied. "You need a strike team that knows how the Blood-Hounds fight. We need four official entry slots for the Regional Qualification Trial."

"What is your price?" Corvus asked directly.

"Fifty percent of the salvage rights inside the Trial instance," Noël answered. "And full independence during the execution phase."

Julian stepped forward, drawing his broadsword halfway from its sheath. "Fifty percent?! Father, this vagrant is demanding half of our house's potential loot!"

"If your team gets wiped out in the first thirty minutes, fifty percent of zero is zero," Noël noted deadpan.

Corvus looked at Noël's left eye, catching the subtle violet gleam deep within his pupil. A seasoned merchant lord knew when he was holding a losing hand against a superior negotiator.

"Done," Corvus declared, raising his right hand. "Fifty percent of salvage rights, four retainer slots on the Falcrest manifest, and full tactical independence."

Tiiiing!

[Trial Assignment: Regional Qualification Trial: 'The Spires of Aethelgard']

[Clear Objective: Secure Top-3 Ranking / Neutralize Hostile Retainers]

Julian gritted his teeth, slamming his broadsword back into its scabbard, but he didn't dare contradict his father again. He glared at Noël with sharp venom. "Do not drag our house down, vagrant."

"Try to keep up," Noël replied, turning on his heel.

They walked out of the Falcrest Estate courtyard, the heavy wrought-iron gates closing behind them with a resonant clang.

Gideon let out a quiet breath as they reached the public avenue. "Corvus accepted every condition. But Julian will be a liability inside the trial grounds."

"Arrogance is predictable," Noël said, adjusting his trench coat collar. "We can use predictable liabilities as bait."

Tally hovered out from beneath Noël's coat lining, its tiny brass monocle glinting. "Boss! The official registration packet for 'The Spires of Aethelgard' just dropped! The Trial starts tomorrow at dawn!"

Noël checked the silver Chronometer of the Unseen Clerk inside his vest. The internal gears hummed smoothly.

"Lyra, finish sharpening the weapons," he said. "Tomorrow, we climb the Spires."

It was a monumental monolithic pillar devoid of windows. Its black surface was carved with thousands of pulsing crimson runes that thrummed with immense weight."The ambient pressure here is three times higher than in the lower towers," Gideon said. He leaned on his right foot, his silver rapier drawn, its white-gold solar ether flickering against the gale. "My ether flow is lagging.""Keep your breathing steady," Noël said, wiping sweat and blood from his chin.
