Somewhere in the fortress…

In an alley hidden far deep out of sight from anyone, a presence lingered amongst the darkest shadows, wallowing in a haze of humidity and stench, an environment that was made bearable by sleep and hibernation.

Swish!

A rare breeze blew through the desolate alley, carrying a scent of freshness that drove away the stench momentarily, rousing the presence from its sleep in the process.

Feeling the breeze whistling by, a thought lingered in its mind, awakening a powerful longing within it.

“How long has it been since I basked in the sun? Every day I skulk away in this wretched place hiding, and at night prowl like a lowly beast looking for prey to devour to recover my strength. Yet the prey are numerous but difficult to feed on, for they have turned the game around, becoming predators while I am reduced to mere prey by them.”

“I hate this… I hate how weak I have now become. Once I was a majestic being, the tallest and most glorious in existence, spreading my mi

  • Karla Abducted?

Quickly reaching her apartment unit, Karla said to Bolin, “I’ve arrived at home and I’m about to go inside now. After I’ve had my bath, we should gather together with the others to celebrate another successful expedition. I’m in need of a real drink after everything that—”Karla was planning to have Bolin gather the other members of the team together so they could discuss why they were being followed and who could be behind it. But as Karla was speaking, she suddenly paused in surprise as she noticed something unexpected.“Hello, Karla, are you there? Why did you stop talking—did something happen over there? Answer me!”On the other end of the call, Bolin called out to Karla desperately after hearing her suddenly fall silent, fearing that something had happened to her. He was already about to rush out to Karla’s side and see what was going on, but fortunately, Karla’s voice came through the communicator once again, saying to him in a strange voice,“Let me call you back, Bolin—I just

  • Being Followed

“You also noticed some people following you since you entered the fortress, right? Did you manage to get a good look at them?”Hearing Bolin’s question, Karla’s brow arched slightly as she focused on the keyword ‘also’.“Is he also being followed?” Karla asked herself at the same time as she was answering Bolin’s question.“No, I can’t really remember who it was—maybe Bill or Jeof, I’m not sure. You know I wasn’t very social with people back then.”“That’s a no, I guess…”Bolin directly interpreted Karla’s answer as her saying that she didn’t recognize the people following her. As for the names she mentioned, she was likely giving suspects that she thought could be responsible.Bill was the name of somebody from their neighborhood whose father served in the military, so it meant she was suspecting that her followers were from the military. As for Jeof, he was someone with links to the underground gangs who was rumored to be an enforcer, making him a high-level member with considerable

  • Karla’s Return

“Damn it! Why the hell did this expedition take such a bloody long time to complete? I haven’t been back in days and I smell like gutter trash!”“Ptui! I want to throw up.”Making her way up the building to her apartment unit, Karla swore and cursed ferociously out of frustration at her current state. Having just returned to the fortress after completing an expedition into the wilds, she was annoyed that it took so long to return, thus giving her cause to act out her frustrations.“I’ll need a drink to vent all these negative feelings I’m having, but not until I’ve taken a bath first… I really stink.”Smelling the stench coming from her body, Karla had the urge to gag out of pure reflex, forcing her to take shallow breaths just to reduce the amount of foul air that got into her lungs.Ring! In that moment, Karla’s communicator rang, and seeing who it was, she picked it up unhurriedly.“Yes, Bolin, what do you want?” Karla asked testily. From the other end of the call, Bolin’s voice ca

  • Moving Forward

Cale waking up to find that five days had passed while he was asleep was shocking beyond any doubt, but he was able to accept it shortly after. Given the state of his recovery, it made sense that it would take so long to recover so much. But then, Cale looked at Anise, thinking of how she had stayed by his side to care for and guard him throughout these five days, and he felt grateful to her.Looking at the pile of things she had dropped on the floor when she had come in, Cale realized they were fresh beddings and other items that could be used to make Cale more comfortable while he slept. It was no wonder that despite spending five days unconscious, Cale’s body didn’t smell and he looked clean, with even his clothes being a different pair than what he was wearing when he escaped—Cale chose not to think about how Anise would’ve needed to change him, seeing it as not being important—while Anise herself looked haggard, like she hadn’t had a good night’s rest in a long time, with her clo

  • Time Passes By

In an abandoned facility, a rift opened in space through which Cale weakly came out with unsteady steps. Following behind him was Anise, who immediately swept the environment with her gaze, alert for any potential danger or ambush.Ignoring Anise for now, Cale moved with heavy breathing and went to lean against the wall to his side for a short rest. But his eyelids were too heavy to keep open, and with his consciousness waning, Cale found that he could no longer stay awake. So, looking at Anise, Cale gave a command before falling unconscious, “Watch over me while I take a short nap. I’m so very tired…”…Several hours later, Cale woke up with a start. He immediately looked all over his surroundings only to find himself all alone in an unfamiliar location.Cale didn’t recall much of what happened before he fell unconscious, only that he had finally managed to escape the laboratory where he had been experimented on and tested. As for where he was now, Cale didn’t recognize the place. It

  • Deciding Hive’s Fate

“It isn’t a big issue. There wasn’t any reason to bring it up before,” the admiral simply replied, not minding the suspicion in the provost’s words. In return, Magistrate Yelena let out a little smile, asking in amusement,“Then why bring it up now if it wasn’t a big issue before? And why do you want Hive to handle this?”With the same tone as before, the admiral explained, “After the beast tide, my men noticed traces of an exotic beast infiltrating the fortress, but none of them could track it down, causing them to speculate it was in a weakened state and had hidden itself to recover. But recently, I have received news of a series of unnatural deaths where people have had their flesh, blood, and mana sucked out of them.”“My people believe that it is the doing of this exotic beast, who is using its victims as a means to speed up recovery. In order not to spread panic amongst the populace, plus with the exotic beast acting in secret, none of this was made public. We have been investig
