Calvin Constantine slowly peeled off his lollipop wrapper. The sharp and annoying sound was loud enough to catch the attention of everyone in the quiet boardroom.
Everyone seated there looked at him with disgust. This was a serious meeting, yet here this grown adult was, indulging himself like a child. But everyone's attention quickly shifted to the man in charge upon hearing his voice. "Twenty years," Nathan Harrington, Calvin's father-in-law, said with a rumbling tone that frightened everyone. No one could even bring themselves to look at his face. They could only see his large hands marked by dark knuckles, old bloodstains that soap couldn't wash away anymore. "For twenty years, I worked hard building this company from the ground up." Nathan rose from his seat. His large shadow covered most of the room because of how tall he was. Though he wore an expensive black suit that cost more than average people earned in a year, the danger of making him angry was most apparent. He had built his music company the way old kings built kingdoms. Nathan used fear and pain. Everybody knew it. Now that kingdom was falling apart. His biggest singers were either signed with other companies or caught up in legal issues the label wanted no part of. Radio stations that had partnered with the label for decades were no longer playing their songs. If they did, it was based on forced demand. To the average person, everything seemed fine, but behind closed doors, it was different. Nathan's company was sinking. Everyone looked disturbed about it. Everyone except the man rolling candy in his mouth while sinking into his chair. Calvin's long brown coat hung loose on his thin body. He looked more like a scarecrow dressed for a funeral than a living business executive. Calvin looked perfectly calm. So calm, in fact, that he seemed bored. This felt disrespectful on so many levels. But before addressing his son-in-law, Nathan walked toward his wife Stephanie. She was seated beside him but trying hard to look away. Though she put both hands together as if reciting a prayer, that wasn't enough to stop her painted fingers from shaking. About ten years ago, those hands had signed the best stars into the label. They had comforted her husband at times like this. Now they shook whenever her husband looked at her. "Stephanie, you built this company with me," Nathan said in a low voice as he walked toward her like a hunter ready to strike. "I trusted you with everything. I put our money and our future in your hands. The family name was entrusted to you." Stephanie could no longer hide how afraid she was. She swallowed hard as her husband came closer. Though she wore expensive makeup, Calvin could still see the fading bruises and swollen parts of her face. Her husband had directly caused them. "So tell me," Nathan said as he stopped behind her chair. "How does the biggest music company in America suddenly start losing money?" A few seconds passed, and no one made a sound. Stephanie opened her mouth but knew better than to repeat the sad truth she'd told him the night before. So she said nothing, even though she knew the answer. Everyone in the room knew the answer but didn't want to lose their lives because of Nathan's anger. He walked over to his son Ronald. The 22-year-old was now hunching in his chair like a student who'd failed to study for a test. One would have expected a son of Nathan to share the same dominant qualities as his father. Instead, Ronald was covered in sweat in the cold room. As Nathan came closer, the young man tried his best to look busy. He was shivering as he looked through papers on the table that he'd already read twelve times. "I gave you one job, Ronald," Nathan said, putting his large hands on his son's shoulders. The young man almost jumped when he touched him. His entire body went stiff that instant. "Your job, Ronald, was to find talent. Real talent. The kind of singers who would restore our company to its former glory." Ronald's voice cracked when he spoke. "Dad, we hired the best teams in Los Angeles. Every singer had a whole team with the best managers, stylists, and voice coaches. We even hired people to handle their social media." Nathan raised a brow as if he'd just heard something surprising. "The best?" Ronald didn't know what to say anymore as his father's angry face changed into a bright smile. Knowing the older man, the smile only made everyone in the room more afraid. Nathan waited ten long seconds, looking around as if he enjoyed how everyone squirmed at his temper. "Well, if we have the best, then why are we losing fifteen million dollars this quarter?" Now Ronald had done it. The old clock on the wall was ticking like a bomb. Everyone in the room knew the real answer. He was too afraid to take chances. Ronald played it safe by only signing singers who sounded exactly like everyone trending on the radio. Everyone he'd signed the previous year had no fire. They gave people no reason to care about them. Nathan had thought that by having his son on the job instead of his older son, the label would have a shot at getting better. His older son was caught in many scandals. Now it seemed that was the wrong choice. But there was more. Calvin had heard the whispers around the office. Based on his sources, Ronald wasn't just being too careful. He was taking money from other record companies and selling information about which artists Nathan planned to sign. The young man was trading company secrets for cash payments going straight to his bank account. Now Ronald would learn what happened to those who failed Nathan Harrington.

"Three more investors left your company today. Your stock dropped eight percent. Your artists are asking questions." "It's only temporary," Nathan said through his teeth. "We've discussed this already, haven't we?" Jonah took a long drag from the cigarette and blew smoke up. "While that might sound like an impressive excuse to you, the council doesn't think so. They think you're losing control, Nathan Harrington. They think... it's time for new leadership." "I built all this from nothing," Nathan said, gesturing at the building they were in and the Neo sign on their shirts. "I've made Neo more money than anyone in ten years. And you come here to talk to me about new leadership? Have you gone mad?" "Ten years, Nathan. Don't make a big deal out of it," Jonah said like he was intentionally trying to be offensive. "But what have you done this week?" One of the men stepped forward, cr

Nathan loosened his tie with one hand, phone pressed against his ear with the other as he walked down the hallway. "Mr. Peterson, I understand your concerns, but I promise you this is only temporary. Calvin Constantine's little stunt was nothing more than a social media charade. Rest assured, my team is handling it." He stopped at his bedroom door, listening to the investor's worried voice. "No sir, there is no need to worry. Your investment is safe. In fact, I think we'll see better returns once all this dies down. We both know the music industry loves a comeback story. That's the only reason Calvin Constantine is everywhere on the news right now." Nathan pushed open his bedroom door. Stephanie was already asleep. "Don't worry, sir. I assure you that by next quarter, all investors in my company see why Harrington Music Group has been the most profitable label for ten years. Trust me, Mr. Peterson. Have I eve
Chapter 35: Midnight Confessions.
"Where do you live?" he asked. "I live in Brentwood," she said. "But Jason..." "Yes?" he said. "I meant what I said back then. When we talked on set, I thought you were just another angry celebrity having a bone to pick with the world. But the way you handled tonight was beyond me." Jason shook his head. "Stop making a big deal out of it. Anyone with a level head would have done the same thing, if not better." Nina gently bit her lower lip, still staring at Jason's face. Jason glanced at her for a while before keeping his eyes back on the road. Without her quick wits, intellect and charm, Nina Gilbert was just a young woman who just experienced a difficult night. "If you are still thinking about that envelope, then stop. It doesn't matter." "Well, thank goodness one of the paramedics brought it along. It is an apology letter from Calvin, along with some lega
Chapter 34: Emergency Room.
Before they started their rapid-fire questions, Jason ordered the staff present to clear a path. As they did, two paramedics rushed in with their medical equipment. Jason slowly moved aside as they took over. One of the paramedics looked at him, and before she could ask anything, Jason gave the full report. "An allergic reaction to sulfates in wine. Difficulty breathing, flushing and throat constriction." The lead paramedic nodded as she briefly turned to Nina. "Are you her boyfriend?" asked the lead paramedic while preparing an injection. Jason hesitated for a moment. "He's with me," Nina said between difficult breaths. The paramedic nodded as she injected the drug. Within two minutes, Nina was breathing properly again. The panicked look in her eyes was gone, and she could see Jason staying close. "Are you feeling better?" Nina nodded. "Pretty much, yeah," she said with her voice still raspy. "While that's a good sign, we still need to take her to the hospital for f

While Jason was stuck in his thoughts, Nina raised her glass with a playful smile that made the knot in his stomach feel even more painful. "Here's to enjoying a year of being stuck with me." Jason didn't raise his glass, wondering why she was raising hers after already drinking from it. "Can't contain the excitement," he said before cutting into his food. "Has any of your girlfriends ever told you how cute you are when you sulk?" Then she took another sip of the drink. "I'm sure you were the spoiled type who whined and cried whenever things didn't go your way." Jason shook his head, stabbing his food like he was imagining the meal as Nina. "Have you met my mother before?" The woman took a final sip from the cup before answering. "God, this is so good," she whispered to herself in a way that was loud enough for Jason to hear. "Probably not," she answered Jason. "But I know you kissed my hand even when you couldn't stand being around me. I love the way you opened
