241.

Hozier Bagel slammed the folder on the edge of Devin's desk so hard the papers inside nearly spilled out.

"With all due respect sir, fuck this shit! We can't keep quiet anymore." Hozier said angrily. "Do you see what they're saying about you out there? Do you even bother reading the headlines?"

Devin leaned back in his chair, calm as if Hozier hadn't just cursed at him. Hozier was supposed to be a replacement for the late Henry Blake, but with his temper and over enthusiasm, he seemed to be the opposite.

"I don't need to read them.” Devin muttered. "I know exactly what's being said. I knew this was going to happen anyway.”

"Then why the fuck are you acting like it doesn't matter?" Hozier shouted. "Gloria's tearing you apart in the press, and she’s calling you a murderer. Every damn news site is running her words like gospel. People are spitting your name out like it's poison. And you sit here pretending it's beneath you?"

Devin only smirked, not in amusement but annoy

    242. Petra had been pacing her room for hours. Her blood was boiling. She didn't want to see anyone, especially not anyone sent from Devin, but that didn't stop him. Every passing day, more gifts, more letters, more flowers showed up at her gate, she was sick of it. It was like he went from being distant and nonchalant to distant and perpetually annoying. Her personal guard came in that morning looking a bit shaken. "Another delivery, madam." He said in a very calm but worried tone, almost like he was scared that she was going to pounce on him or something. She looked at him. "From him again?" The guard nodded. "Yes. Flowers, a box of chocolates, and... a handwritten letter." "Fuck him!" She snapped. "How many times do I have to say it? I don't want his gifts in this house." The guard sighed. "I know. I already told the guys to hold the delivery at the gate again but..." "But what?" Petra snapped. "The delivery guy insists it's important. He says Dev

  • Chapter 240

    240. The entire family of the late Kia, and now, Eva, was in grief. Everyone had gathered around and it was quite obvious that a lot of unresolved emotions hung in the air. All around, voices rose and things crashed and it was difficult to tell which was stronger… the anger or the grief of the family. Kia’s mother was sitting on the couch, not screaming like the others. She had her face buried in her palms, sobbing. In front of her was her sister, Gloria, and the woman was pacing about like she had been possessed by an angry spirit. “Two fucking daughters!” Gloria screamed, pointing her finger in the air. “Not one but two! That bastard Devin couldn’t stop at Kia, and now Eva too! And people still dare to defend him?” “Gloria, please…” Kia’s mother whispered, barely unable to gather her own thoughts as it was. “No, don’t tell me to calm down!” Gloria spun around, her face red and hot. “He is a murderer, and a man with money and too much power. Do you know what that means? I

  • Chapter 239

    239. Devin was in his office, sitting there in silence that was occasionally broken by the ticking of the wall clock. He had found the ticking on the device to soothe him in the beginning, but right now, it felt like a distraction. He got up and down worker towards it, taking the device off the wall and removing the batteries before letting out a sigh. Dreykov stood by the window with his arms folded, and his eyes were focused on the outside world. “Boss.” Dreykov said at last, breaking the silence. “Are you not going to check on her? She left your house broken and in tears. She hasn’t called too, I think you should reach out to her.” Devin pretended not to understand what he was talking about as he walked back to his desk. “Official calls will take place later, I’m not in the mood to have a chat.” Devin stated simply. Dreykov shook his head, frowning. “That’s not what I meant sir. I was referring to Miss Knight. Don’t you think you have to do something where she’s concer

  • Chapter 238

    238. Petra thought she was going to self-combust as she ran. She didn’t even realise that she had started crying again as she shoved the heavy doors open with both of her hands, her chest heaving and she took large gulps of air. “Petra, wait!” Devin yelled behind her. She didn’t turn back. She didn’t want to see his face ever again, not after what he had done. Her bare feet hit the ground as she ran off and the guards bowed when she was passing but quickly moved aside silently when they saw how fast she was moving. Nobody dared stop her. Except Dreykov, that is. He ran after her. “Petra!” He called out, trying to grab her. “You can’t just—” “Don’t fucking touch me!” She snapped at him, turning around to glare at him with wild eyes. “Stay the hell away, Dreykov. All of you!” He froze a few steps away, hands raised. He looked back towards the doors where Devin stood in the shadows, watching. “Petra, listen to me.” Dreykov tried again. “No!” She screamed, her voice

  • Chapter 237

    237. Petra was trying to take it all in, trying to register what the hell was happening. Blood was everywhere, on the floor, on the walls… on Devin's hands. She looked around, the ground seemed so close… it was then that she realised that she was kneeling in someone’s blood, and now the mess was on her too. She looked up. She had remembered seeing her father flung like a rag doll before she dropped to the ground. Was that a dream? Why did she feel like she was thinking underwater? Why did everything feel so unreal? She looked up, and sure as hell, her father was on the wall, pinned to it by a weapon. Her scream cut through the silence as she got up and ran to his body. "No! No, no, no papa!” She cried, reaching up to shake him with both of her hands. "Get up, please! Please get the fuck up! You bastard, you can't die on me now!" Her hands smeared more of his blood across his shirt as she tried to pull him down, but his head just lolled lifelessly and he didn’t even move an in
