The students file in their numbers. Cole, Anna, Daniel and Sofia sat among the students. Ms. Green stood at the front.
“Just so you know, I will be giving a test by the end of this lesson”
The class responded by groaning and murmuring in protest.
But Mrs. Green held up her hand “save your breath you’re still going to do it”
Daniel raised his hand.
“Yes, Daniel?”
“I’m still thinking about your history class… the one about Hunter?’
Ms. Green’s eyes narrowed slightly “what about it?”
“I find it funny that people like you teach history, but weren’t there to know for sure”
Ms. Green smirked “if first-hand experience was the only qualification, then cavemen should be teaching us prehistoric studies”
The entire class laughed indistinctly.
Ms. Green continued. “Well, class, I will be telling you about an artifact that was used centuries ago… the witches’ codex”
The class grew quiet, interest arising
Ms. Green’s voice took on a storytelling tone “the book was formed i the begging days when the most powerful witches and wizards from the north, south, east and west came together, each using their powers and knowledge to create this book”
She opened a book. A picture shows four witches and wizards in ancient robes surrounding a book, channeling magic into it.
A student raised his hands “so why would they create this book?”
“For witches, it contained the most powerful spells ever… and only the most powerful of witches could handle its raw power”
Ms. Green paused for effect. “But one day, a young wizard thought he could use it, but it wasn’t his time..”
She flipped the book, showing a young wizard boy with black magic all around him.
“The magic he wanted turned into dark magic, destroying his mind and causing him to wipe out his entire community. The council of witches then decided to alter the book, making it open to those powerful enough to wield its power”
Sofia leaned forward “so, does the book still exist?”
“It’s kept in the Hollowere National Museum under maximum security”
Anna scoffed “Bet I could steal it?”
“Sure you can” Sofia said sarcastically
Ms. Green clapped her hands. “Since that’s all for today. I’ll just go and..”
A student named Tony raised his hand “Wait? You said you were giving us a test”
A collective groan filled the room. Students poured Tony with crumpled paper.
Cole shook his head “Oh, Tony. always talking too much”
After the test, students murmured as they submitted their papers. Daniel shot Ms. Green an evil grin as he placed his on her desk.
Anna approached Ms. Green’s table. Ms. Green gently grabbed her hand.
Anna looked confused. “What’s happening?”
Ms. Green lowered her voice “I want you to know that I know about Daniel. And I want you to know that I believe and support you guys”
Anna nodded “I appreciate that”
“I’ll be here if you need my help”
Anna exited the room. Ms. Green watched her go, her expression troubled.
BOYS DORM
It's Nighttime. Cody and Jack woke up. They quickly and quietly dressed up in their party outfits and sneaked out.
CORRIDOR
In the corridor, they raced through with precise stealth. They came to a sudden halt when they found Mila and Kenzy waiting for them.
“What are you doing here?” Jack asked, surprised
Kenzy looked at Cody with disappointment “So, you’re actually going?”
“Yeah, why not?”
Jack turned back to Knezy “You still haven’t answered my question”
“We’re going to the library to study. We have an algebra test”
They heard footsteps fast approaching. In alarm, they all turned to see Cole walking toward them.
Cody smirked at Cole “changed your mind?”
Cole shook his head firmly “Heck no. I just wanted to see if you’ll actually make it”
Anna appeared from behind, wearing a party dress like Jack and Cole
“Well, I have” she announced
Jack blinked “whaddaya mean?”
“I’m coming too”
Cody and Jack looked at each other, then burst out laughing. They quickly stopped when they realized she was completely serious.
“Is there a problem” Anna asked, raising an eyebrow
“No. It's just that the other boys won’t agree, cause like…”
He gestured to him and Jack then to her.
Anna leaned forward, offended. “So, I can’t come because I’m a girl?”
Jack sputtered “Of course not!”
Cody quickly added “Yeah, women empowerment!"
Jack nodded vigorously “Yeah, women rule…”
Anna smirked “So, I’m coming”
Cole looked at Anna with suspicion
‘Why did you change your mind?”
“Because I want to show these ‘boys’ what a girl can do”
She walked past them. Cody and Jack followed. Mila and Kenzy headed toward the library. Cole watched Anna with narrowed eyes.
Behind the school, Cody, Jack and Anna met up the two humans from the basketball court. They had brought more students, making their numbers seven in total. They stood around a hole dug in the ground.
The first grinned at the sight of them "Glad you came” he shook hands with Cody and Jack
The second student spotted Anna “What is she doing here?”
“Oh, she wanted to come and we couldn’t stop her” Jack explained
“Yeah, and neither will you” Anna added coldly
The second student stepped back “OK, Ma’am”
The third student pointed to the hole “we managed to make a hole, but there’s some type of barrier or something protecting it” he touched the purple force field and got zapped, yelping in pain.
The fourth student frowned "I wasn't expecting this… do any of you have powers that can remove this thing?”
Cody smirked “I guess that’s my cue”
He approached the force field, stretched out his hands and concentrated. The force field shimmered and shook but eventually disappeared.
The first student grinned “All right, let’s go”
One by one, Cody, Jack and the seven students climbed through the opening and entered the woods.
LIBRARY
In the library, Kenzy and Mila sat across from each other, studying as their books were open. Mila noticed Kenzy who was clearly distracted.
“Um, the square root of 49 is 6” Mila said, testing her
“Yeah” Kenzy nodded vaguely
Mila closed her book “you’re not even listening”
Kenzy sighed “I’m sorry, but I can’t stop thinking about Cody”
“What about Cody?” Mila asked, concerned
“Is he making the right decision? I’m happy he’s ;earning to embrace his powers. But is using them to sneak out really good?”
Mila took a deep breath “Kenzy, I know you care about Cody. But he’s in high school. And high school is where one figures out who they are. So it’s up to Cody to decide what he wants to use his powers for, whether good or bad”
Kenzy exhaled “It’s just… I come from a place where witches would do anything to gain power or use that power for selfish, evil reasons. Cody has great power, and I know sneaking out of school isnt that evil but..
Kenzy paused “but I don't want him to end up like us witches, evil, power-hungry, and selfish”
Mila smiled “cody won’t, cause he has you to guide him”
Kenzy sighed, somewhat satisfied. Then her eyes widened in panic “I’ve been so busy worrying about Cody, I forgot I had algebra”
She waved her hand, about to cast a spell. Mila quickly grabbed her arm.
“Kenzy?!”
“I can’t afford to fail”
Mila's expression softened “is this because of your previous expulsions?"
Kenzy nodded, her tone low “this is my chance to start over. And I feel like I’m already failing”
Mila reached across the table and held her hand “you just have to try”

CHAPTER 11BOY’S DORM In the boy’s dorm, Cole laid asleep. HUNTER’S DAY VENUE, HOLLOWEREPrincipal Diana stood a distance from Mayor Mulligan. Mayor Mulligan was a tall, black broad man with short hair. He wore a dustercoat with a fedora hat. He looked around, then leaned closer “How have you been doing?” he asked, his tone caring “I’ve been okay.
