Then she moved to his left arm and did the same thing.

Damien lay on the floor with both legs broken and both arms broken and blood pouring from his mouth and his nose and cuts all over his face, he could not move, he could barely breathe, every inch of him was on fire with pain so intense that his body kept trying to shut down just to escape it.

Clara handed the bat back to the guard and smoothed her dress with both hands like she had just finished something ordinary.

"Good," she said quietly. "Now I can forgive you for wasting my time."

Damien stared at her through the haze of pain and shock and he could not believe this was real, could not believe this was the woman he had been married to for four years, the woman he thought he knew.

How did he let them trick him like this?

How did he not see it coming?

He was so angry, so devastated, so destroyed that he could not even form words anymore, all he could do was lie there and shake and bleed and wait for whatever came next.

Richard looked down at him and nodded to the guards. "Get rid of him."

"Where?" one of the guards asked.

"The frozen pits," Richard said. "The graveyard on the east side, no one goes there, throw him in and let the cold finish what we started, he will not last thirty minutes."

The guards moved immediately, they grabbed Damien by his broken arms and dragged him across the floor toward the back door, every movement sent fresh pain shooting through his body and he screamed again but no one cared.

They threw him into the back of a black van and slammed the doors shut, the engine started and the van pulled away from the Whitmore estate and drove out into the frozen wasteland beyond the city.

Damien lay in the back of the van with his broken body sprawled across the cold metal floor, every breath he took felt like knives in his chest, his legs were useless, his arms were useless, blood pooled underneath him and soaked into his torn clothes.

He knew this was the end.

He knew he was going to die out here in the cold with no one to help him, no one to even know what happened to him.

The van stopped.

The doors opened and freezing wind rushed in and bit into Damien's skin like teeth, the guards grabbed him again and dragged him out into the snow.

The frozen pits.

A massive stretch of abandoned land on the eastern edge of the city where the apocalypse had hit hardest, where entire buildings had collapsed under the weight of ice and snow, where bodies from the first wave still lay buried under frozen rubble because no one had bothered to dig them out.

No one came here, no one survived here.

The guards dragged Damien to the edge of a deep pit filled with ice and frozen waste and they threw him in without a word.

Damien hit the bottom hard and his broken bones screamed and his vision went black for a moment, when it came back he was lying on his side in a pile of frozen garbage and broken metal and ice.

He could not move.

He could not feel his fingers anymore, the cold was already creeping into his skin and spreading through his body like poison, his breath came out in short shallow gasps and every time he tried to inhale the frozen air burned his lungs.

He was so cold, so tired, so angry.

"This is how it ends," Damien thought, his mind starting to drift. "This is how my life ends, in a frozen pit, alone, betrayed by everyone I trusted."

He thought about his mother, how she had died begging for help that never came, how she had frozen to death in a small room while the Whitmore family sold the ring that could have saved her.

He thought about his father, who died the day the apocalypse struck, who never got a chance to fight back.

And he thought about Clara standing over him with a bat in her hands, breaking his bones one by one without a single shred of guilt on her face.

"I will never forgive them," Damien thought, and even though his body was shutting down, even though the cold was wrapping around his heart and slowing it down, that anger stayed sharp and clear. "If I could survive this, if I could live through this, I would make them pay for everything."

But he was not going to survive, his eyes started closing, his breathing slowed.

The cold pressed in from all sides and wrapped around him like a blanket made of ice.

"This is it."

At that exact moment, Damien felt his entire body go rigid with shock, and it was not the shock of receiving another system mission that froze him in place, it was the single word attached to that mission, a name that struck something deep and painful inside him the second it registered in his mind.Whitmore.That name alone was enough to send a cold shiver crawling up his spine, a name he had never once expected to hear again so soon, a name that belonged to the very family who had destroyed everything he once loved in the life he had already lived through. Clara, his wife in that frozen future, the woman who stood over him with a bat in her hands and broke every bone in his body without a flicker of guilt on her face, her family name had been Whitmore. That could only mean one thing, and the realization hit him like a punch to the gut, this woman lying on the ground bleeding out in front of him, this Megan Whitmore, had to be connected somehow to that same bloodline, to that same r

At that moment, Damien could not stop himself from smiling. The smile slowly spread across his face, deep and full of hope, because one thing was clear in his mind now: he was not going to make the same mistake again. He would not trust the Whitmore family. He would not wait for someone else to save him.He would not waste the second chance he had been given. Before he could say anything else, another notification appeared in front of him, and the system screen that had been floating in the air suddenly changed.[SYSTEM MISSION COUNTDOWN ACTIVATED.][TIME REMAINING BEFORE THE FIRST SYSTEM MISSION IS RELEASED: 01:00:00.][THE FIRST SYSTEM MISSION WILL BE ACTIVATED IN ONE HOUR.]Damien stared at the countdown as the numbers began to move.[00:59:59.]His heart started beating faster. He had one hour before the system gave him his first mission, one hour before he found out what he needed to do to begin gaining experience, system points, and rewards, and even though he had no idea what k

At that moment Damien stared at the notification without blinking.Another line of text appeared beneath it.[STARTER ATTRIBUTES HAVE BEEN UNLOCKED.][1. UNLIMITED SYSTEM STORAGE.][2. UNLIMITED SYSTEM FARMLAND.][3. SYSTEM TIME DIFFERENCE.][ONE MINUTE INSIDE THE SYSTEM EQUALS ONE DAY OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM.]Damien's eyes widened as he read the next line.[ONE HOUR INSIDE THE SYSTEM EQUALS SIXTY DAYS OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM.]He quickly began calculating in his head. One day inside the system had twenty-four hours, and every hour held sixty minutes, which meant one day inside the system contained one thousand four hundred and forty minutes. If one thousand four hundred and forty days in the system world would equal one day in real words That was almost four years in the system word.Damien's lips slowly parted. He had sixty days before the apocalypse, but inside the system, he could spend over 240 years and still gain the same amount of outside time before the disaster arrived. With that mu

The moment Damien heard his mother’s voice and saw her standing alive in front of him, he could no longer control himself. He rushed forward and pulled her into his arms. His movement was so sudden that his mother stumbled back, her eyes widening as she stared at him in complete shock, but Damien held her tightly against his chest as though she might disappear the moment he let go.For two years, he had watched her suffer. For two years, he had listened to her weak breathing and seen the cold slowly take her life while the Whitmore family kept the fire ring that could have saved her.For two years, he had blamed himself for not being able to protect her.Now she was standing in front of him again, warm, healthy, and confused, and Damien could not stop the tears from filling his eyes."What the hell is going on?" his mother asked, her voice filled with worry. "Why are you doing this? Damien, are you okay? What happened to you?"Damien did not answer her.He only held her tighter while

Damien lay there in the frozen pit with his broken body sinking deeper into the ice and garbage, with the cold wrapping tighter around his chest like invisible hands squeezing the last bits of warmth out of him, and somewhere in the fog of pain and exhaustion his mind started drifting toward his mother."I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice so weak it barely made a sound, so thin it almost disappeared into the frozen air around him. "I'm so sorry, Mother, I failed you."The words came out broken and slow because his throat was closing up from the cold, because his lungs were struggling to pull in air, because every part of him was shutting down piece by piece."I failed you," he said again, and tears started sliding down his frozen cheeks. "I was so foolish, I believed them, I believed every single word those good-for-nothing bastards told me, I thought if I just worked hard enough, if I just did what they asked, they would keep their promise, they would give me the ring, they would le
