Chapter 8: Eye of Vision, Ancient Runes

It fucking hurts. Damn, I forgot about that. They give us incredible power but only after causing the MC pain. How the hell does one survive such pain?

After a few minutes of tormenting, the pain finally subsided, and I fell to the floor.

When I woke up, it was already late evening. Damn, I was unconscious for hours; if this happens out in the wild, I sure will die.

It’s better to use any reward when I’m in a safe zone. Now let’s check what the eye does.

I went and stood in front of the mirror. Hmm, there is no change. If I remember, eye color changes but not necessarily.

From the description, the vision gets enhanced; let’s check. I went to the window and looked at the city. There is nothing new. Did the eye fail? Maybe I have to say magic words?

I started to say some random words.

‘Activate’

‘Begin’

‘Open Sesame’

Maybe I should say the name.

‘Eye of Vision, activate.’

Suddenly the vision changed. I could see through the walls and see what people could do. I shifted my sight in the direction of the sun. I can see the wild forests in the west, which are in no way visible to anyone from the city.

I quickly went and stood in front of the mirror. One of the eyes is brown, which is the original color, but the other is Silver colored. My eye is mutated and advanced to a state beyond normal humans.

I couldn’t help but laugh like a maniac. From the description given, this isn’t the final form of the eye, and no one in the city or, for that matter, in the entire empire has this kind of power. What if it reaches the final form?

Yes, this will help me a lot, but it’s not enough. I need more power so that I can protect the ones I  care about and punish those who go against me. I need to check the other two rewards.

‘Growl!’

Before that, I think I’m hungry and should eat first.

Damn, my body smells of filth. I should take a bath before going for supper, or else Mary will get mad, and it gives me shivers.

I took a long hot bath, relaxing, planning on what to do next and what changes would occur.

After refreshed, I got dressed. That’s when I saw in the mirror that my eye was still silver in color. Though I trust both Thomas and Mary, they would think it was some kind of infection, and I went mad. This may cause problems. I will keep them in the future when I am strong, and they will believe me.

How do you make them go away? Possibly the same as I got them activated.

‘Eyes of Vision, deactivate.’

My eye turned to normal color. Now that my secret is safe, I have an advantage over others. Though I can’t use it in public, this would defiantly come in handy during hunting.

Now that the problem was solved, I went downstairs to solve my hunger problem.

Mary’s cooking to me is the best. Even the cooks from famous restaurants can’t compete with her food.

I exchanged a few words before I went upstairs to my room. Now it’s time to take a look at the other rewards.

There is the Book of Ancient Runes and another on Ancient Formations.

Formations, I have an idea about what they are. The knowledge about them comes after one joins an academy since learning before becoming a magician would be a waste as it requires magic.

The book description clearly stated that one needed to learn Ancient Runes to understand these formations. So I have no choice but to go through the Book of Ancient Runes.

I flipped the book for over an hour, and the only thing I gained was frustration. I couldn’t understand them, even though there was a translation in my language. I couldn’t even remember those runes, though the system has a database, which is supposed to record everything I learn and never forget.

I checked the database, but there are no changes.

Frustrated, I wanted to beat something up. I remembered Rod telling me everything I learned would never be forgotten. Hmm, learn; he said what you learn, not read. So does that mean I have to understand to get updated in the database and for me to remember permanently?

How to understand this damn language?

I had an idea to use the eye. Most eyes have the power of knowledge or attacks. Since mine doesn’t have an attack power, let’s try it and see if it works.

I activated the eye and started to flip through, and it did work.

The language became easier to understand and remember them.

There are a total of 81 runes, and these runes can be used to form a lot of combinations and form words. It took the entire night to learn those 81 runes. It’s almost dawn by the time I remembered all those runes.

It seems only to be the beginning; there are a lot of words written in the book. I could understand because of the universal translator embedded inside, which translates every word.

Looking at this book, I remembered the crash course books back on earth for language enthusiasts. I should take a rest for some time and take a look at the formations book to see if I can understand anything.

From what I know about formations, there is one formation that helps magicians to progress at a faster rate. I don’t remember the name, but this formation is said to draw magic power into the formation, and whoever inside will benefit from it.

If possible, I should learn, though it may not be not easy to do so.

Let’s forget about it for now; I need to go eat or else Mary will get mad. I deactivated my eye before quickly getting refreshed. I then went downstairs to fill my stomach with breakfast and exchange some words with the two.

The noon is approaching; whatever happens today, I will begin and become a magician as soon as possible.
