The transition didn’t feel like falling. It felt like being violently compressed into a single atom and shattered across reality.

Then, the world roared back to life.

The pressurized silence of the hangar vanished, instantly replaced by the deafening, metallic bark of Gustav’s Desert Eagle. White concrete dust exploded into the air.

Time slowed to an agonizing crawl.

Seven could see the supersonic distortion of the heavy caliber bullet rippling through the air, heading directly for his forehead.

His newly supercharged central nervous system didn't just register the threat—it anticipated the geometry. Without a conscious thought, his weight shifted. He spun his torso fractions of an inch, tilting his head back into a fluid, military-honed dodge.

The bullet grazed his cheek, tearing through the empty air where his skull had been a millisecond prior, and slammed into the wall behind him.

Seven hit the oil-stained garage floor, rolling into a tight tactical stance behind the secondary concrete pillar.

Opposite him, Gustav lowered the smoking hand cannon, a triumphant sneer already forming on his face. He expected to see Seven's lifeless body hit the floor boards. He expected a brain-shattered corpse.

Instead, the dust cleared to reveal an impossible nightmare.

Seven stood tall, completely uninjured. He was draped in a sleek, high-threat ballistic vest, reinforced cargo pants, tactical fingerless gloves, and a long, menacing dark leather coat that seemed to absorb the ambient light.

A matte-black ballistic mask covered the lower half of his face, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying authority through the gaps.

Gustav's sneer froze. His eyes widened into balls as his brain completely jammed. "What... what the hell? I saw the round connect! How are you still standing?!"

Seven didn't waste breath on an answer. He reached beneath his long coat, his hands sliding around the textured polymer grips of his newly assigned twin pistols. He racked both slides in a synchronized, lethal hiss.

The metallic click snapped Gustav out of his paralysis. Pure, unadulterated terror flooded the kingpin's face.

"Kill him!" Gustav screamed, his voice cracking into a panicked shriek. "Shoot him! Shoot him now!"

Gustav didn't wait to see if his men obeyed. He spun on his heel, dropped his empty Desert Eagle, and bolted toward the rear exit of the garage, abandoning his crew without a backward glance.

"Gustav!" one of his remaining henchmen shouted, confused.

He never got a second syllable.

Seven stepped out from behind the pillar, his dual-pistol configuration locked into absolute biometric symmetry. His supercharged reaction speed turned the gunfight into a horrific dance.

Bang! Bang!

The left pistol barked once, placing a round directly through the forehead of the confused henchman. Simultaneously, Seven's right hand tracked the second guard who was attempting to lift a submachine gun.

A heavy caliber round caught the man dead-center mass, throwing him backward into an overturned workbench.

The final thug panicked, blindly spraying a full magazine toward Seven.

To Seven, the incoming fire looked like it was moving through water. He sidestepped the trajectory with impossible, fluid grace, the fabric of his long coat whistling as he closed the distance. He didn't even use a bullet.

He stepped inside the guard's blind spot, grabbed the barrel of the weapon, and shattered the man's jaw with a piston-like backhand. The thug collapsed, unconscious before he hit the sand-dusted floor.

Outside, the wailing cadence of police sirens exploded into the alleyway. Red and blue lights strobed aggressively through the shattered windows of the garage.

"State police! Drop your weapons and put your hands on your head!" a voice bellowed through a megaphone.

Seven's jaw tightened behind his respirator mask. He didn't want to kill cops—they weren't his target—but he couldn't let them slow him down. Gustav was running, and Seven knew exactly where that coward was heading.

"I don't have time for this," Seven whispered, his voice muffled and deep through the mask.

He surged toward the broken window of the garage, leaping out into the rain-slicked alley just as a tactical team began to breach the front door.

"Suspect on the move! Rear alley!" a cop screamed, spotting the long leather coat.

Three officers moved into a wedge formation, blocking the exit of the narrow alley with their service weapons drawn.

Seven didn't slow down. He raised his twin pistols, but instead of aiming for chests, his elite sniper instincts locked onto tactical vulnerabilities.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

He shot the front tires of the police cruiser, causing the chassis to drop violently and forcing the officers to dive for cover.

His next two rounds punched cleanly through the handles of the nearby metal dumpsters, sending them sliding across the slick asphalt to form a massive, improvised blockade between him and the police.

A hail of return fire chipped away at the brick walls, but Seven was already a shadow in the fog. He vaulted a chain-link fence, his enhanced physical attributes making the leap effortless.

He hit the main street just in time to see a silver Mercedes sedan screech out of the opposite parking lot, its tires smoking as it tore toward the highway.

Through the tinted glass, Seven caught the silhouette of Gustav, frantically yelling into a cell phone.

Seven's eyes narrowed, a cold, predatory focus taking over his mind.

He scanned the street and spotted an abandoned sports motorcycle parked outside a convenience store, the keys still dangling in the ignition from a terrified rider who had fled from the gunfire.

Seven stranded the bike, kicking the engine to life with a deafening roar.

On his left wrist, the Soul Watch flickered to life, projecting a crisp, holographic route map directly into his line of sight, highlighting the shortest path to the X City ICU.

"I'm coming, Gustav," Seven snarled, twisting the throttle until the metal groaned. "And God help you if you look at my daughter."

  • Chapter 7: A Human Trail

Seven burst through the smoking doorway of Room 412. The ceiling had come down across the bed, small fires crawled along the vinyl floor, and somewhere under the wreckage a machine was screaming its alarm into the dark. Then he saw a small pale hand moving in the dust."Megan!"He shoved his pistols into their holsters and tore the drywall off the bed with both hands. She lay there with the ventilator line snapped loose at her throat, her mouth open, her chest hitching in short, useless pulls. Her eyes found him anyway."I've got you," he said. "I've got you, baby."He lifted her out of the debris. She weighed almost nothing, and she was warm. He held her against his chest and felt it, the small, frantic rise and fall against his vest, and for a moment he forgot the fire and the alarm and the footsteps pounding up the corridor. He'd spent so many nights staring at that chest waiting for it to move. It was moving now."Daddy's here," he whispered into her hair. "I'm not going anywhe

Two security guards lay motionless near the reception desk, and panicked cries echoed from the upper floors. Gustav's cleanup crew was already here. By the time he breached the heavy fire doors of the fourth-floor ICU, he was greeted by the harsh clack-clack of assault rifles. Rain tore at Seven’s long leather coat, but behind his matte-black mask, his breathing remained deep and even. Seven twisted the throttle. The bike surged forward, closing the gap with terrifying speed. Suddenly, the passenger window of the Mercedes rolled down. One of Gustav’s surviving thugs leaned out, a compact submachine gun clutched in his hands. Rat-tat-tat-tat! A muzzle flash strobed in the darkness. A line of automatic fire chewed up the asphalt inches from Seven's front tire. Seven didn't flinch. His supercharged reflexes took over.
