Chapter 1: Headshot
The slow, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor echoed behind his eyes. The image of his lean, pale four-year-old fighting for her life was burned into the back of his skull—a memory Craig Seven couldn't peel off. He didn’t want to. He needed it there, a raw reminder of exactly why he was willing to cross this line.
The black Jeep splashed muddy water onto the sidewalk, cutting through the narrow, rain-slicked alley. Twilight was bleeding out over the city, painting the low-hanging fog a radiant, bruised orange. Seven kept his hands loose on the steering wheel, but his mind was miles away in an X City ICU. The zeros on Megan’s medical bills looped through his brain like a countdown timer. This was a high-stakes drug drop, but to Seven, it was just arithmetic. No mistakes. Every phase of the operation had to be flawless. His mind recoiled as Damon started humming along to the hip-hop track buzzing from the dashboard. Damon sat slumped in the passenger seat, one hand hanging carelessly out the window. “We should buy a yacht when all this is over,” Damon said, breaking the silence. “Uh-huh,” Seven muttered. It was his standard response whenever Damon abandoned logic. They had served eight years together in the SEAL Teams, and Damon had spent half of that time dreaming about yachts. “I’d get one with that red-haired bartender, alright.” Damon laughed, throwing his head back against the restraint. “Have her running drills on the deck, man.” He whistled, then turned his gaze to Seven. “What about you, big boy? Buy a house? Get a dog?” Seven didn't answer. His gaze was locked on the thermal profile of the alley ahead. The heavy fog was a perfect tactical blind, forcing him to rely on instinct. Damon tapped his shoulder, pushing for an answer. “Clear Megan's bills,” Seven said, his voice flat, stripped of the warmth it used to carry. “Then disappear.” Damon looked at him, the humor fading from his expression as he tried to read the hardened expression of the sniper beside him. “How is she?” “Worse.” Movement flickered in the gray mist up ahead. A silhouette. Seven’s pupils dilated. His military instinct overrode everything else. “Brace!” he roared. Instead of slamming the brakes, he cut the wheel hard into a tactical J-turn, trying to present the smallest target profile possible. The tires screamed, kicking up a wall of dirty water and burnt rubber. It wasn't fast enough. The rocket-propelled grenade slammed directly into the Jeep's rear axle. The blast toppled the vehicle, throwing the world into a chaotic spin of shattering glass and ignited petrol. Seven’s seatbelt caught him hard before snapping, dropping him headfirst onto the crumpled roof. Blinding pain spiked through his collarbone. Coughing through the thick smoke, Seven’s training took over. He dragged his body out of the shattered driver-side window, reached back into the wreckage, and hauled a semi-conscious Damon out by his tactical vest. A hail of automatic gunfire tore the fog curtain to shreds. Six men, moving in a disciplined wedge formation, advanced down the alley while emptying their magazines. Seven dragged Damon behind a rusted steel dumpster, bullets sparking off the metal. “Can you fight?” Seven barked, checking his own sidearm. “What happened?” Damon groaned, shaking his head to clear the concussion. He tried to stand, but Seven violently yanked him back down. “Ambush. They knew our route.” “What? I knew James would sell us out,” Damon swore, his hand automatically reaching for the Glock at his hip. “We wait for them to dry-fire, then we break for that service door,” Seven ordered, his voice cool despite the chaos. “Just like old times, buddy,” Damon rasped, spitting blood through stained teeth. “No. Not like old times. I need you locked in.” Seven glared at him, establishing dominant eye contact. The sudden click-clack of empty magazines echoed in the alley. “Move!” Seven commanded. The two men scrambled across the asphalt and threw their shoulders into the wooden door. The frame splintered under their combined weight, spilling them into a dead-end auto garage. There was no rear exit—only two thick concrete support pillars in the center of the room. They split, taking cover behind each. “What's the play?” Damon called out, peeking back toward the shattered entrance. Seven dropped his magazine, verified the count, and slapped it back home. “Establish a fatal funnel. Shoot anything that crosses that threshold.” The first shadow crossed the doorway. Seven didn’t hesitate. He squeezed the trigger twice, placing two rounds dead-center mass. The man collapsed instantly. “Save some for me, cowboy,” Damon hissed. He leaned out, placing two precise shots into a second target, sending the man crashing backward into the alley. Before Seven could warn him, a small, cylindrical object bounced through the broken window, rolling across the oil-stained floor to rest right at Damon's feet. An M67 fragmentation grenade. “Damon, move—” The blast cut Seven off. The shockwave slammed Seven sideways into the concrete pillar, blowing the air from his lungs. His vision strobed white, and a high-pitched ring deafened his ears. For a terrifying half-second, his central nervous system refused to respond. He looked toward the other pillar. There was nothing left to save. Get up. Get up now, or you're both dead. Locking his jaw against the pain, Seven forced himself back into a shooting stance behind his pillar. He separated the horror, shoving the grief deep down into a box he would open later. If there was a later. Heavy, deliberate footsteps entered the garage. BOOM. The concrete pillar vibrated violently against Seven's spine. The distinctive, deafening roar of a .50 AE Desert Eagle echoed through the room. Chunks of concrete exploded outward, showering Seven in white powder. Seven glanced down at his hands. His palms were slick with sweat inside his fingerless gloves, a slight tremor in his grip. A grim, humorless laugh escaped his lips. When had Craig Seven ever feared a gunfight? “Seven! How we always meet under such heated circumstances is almost romantic, don't you think?” Gustav’s calm, mocking voice drifted through the dust. A broken light fixture overhead sparked violently, casting eerie shadows across the floor. “Sorry, Gustav. You're not my type.” Seven tightened his two-handed grip on his Glock 17, leveling it at head height. Megan’s smiling face flashed across his mind one last time. I’m coming, baby. Daddy’s coming home. “Seven!” Gustav shouted, followed by another heavy round from the Desert Eagle. The bullet chewed a massive hole through the edge of the pillar. “I know you’re down to your last mag. Not like an elite operator to come unprepared. What went wrong?” Seven gritted his teeth, sliding the magazine down just enough to feel the witness holes. Fewer than three rounds left. “I don't see a tactical exit for you here, Seven.” Seven didn't see one either. He slammed the magazine back into the well, tightening his grip until the leather of his glove groaned. “I’ve still got four guys with me,” Gustav said, his tone measured and slow. “Yours is currently bleeding into the floorboards.” Seven’s eyes drifted to the shape of Damon's body. He closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, tapping the back of his skull against the concrete. Damn it. “I can make this painless for you, Seven,” Gustav offered. “Yeah? How’s that?” Seven yelled back, trying to pinpoint Gustav’s exact position by the acoustics of his voice. Gustav chuckled. “I can send a few of my boys down to X City. Have them visit sweet little Megan. Tell her that her daddy sends his regards.” Seven’s heart stopped. The air vanished from his lungs, and his jaw muscles bunched so hard they ached. Adrenaline spiked, blinding and hot. Seven exploded from cover, firing a suppression shot into the overturned workbench where the voice came from before diving behind the secondary pillar. A sharp grunt followed, and the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor told him Gustav was down a man. An immediate wall of lead retaliated, chewing the concrete pillar to pieces. Seven curled into a tight ball, covering his head as plaster and dust rained down on his brown leather trench coat. The gunfire abruptly ceased—the rhythmic pause of a reload. Seven rose instantly. “I just want the cash, Gustav. You keep the product. Nobody else needs to die tonight.” He raised his weapon, his breath ragged. Come on, make the shot. “We are way past negotiations, Navy boy,” Gustav’s voice snarled, dropping the polite facade. In the distance, the faint, wailing cadence of police sirens cut through the rain. It offered a desperate sliver of hope, but Seven knew the hard truth: the police were minutes away, and he had seconds. He braced his core, locking his shoulder muscles. He had to make these final two rounds count. Seven stepped out into the open, bringing the iron sights to eye level. A round from Gustav’s remaining men caught Seven squarely in the left shoulder. The kinetic impact tore through his collarbone, throwing off his alignment. Ignoring the white-hot agony, Seven squeezed the trigger. Gustav staggered backward, clutching a bloody arm. Seven re-indexed and pulled the trigger a final time. Click. The slide locked back. Empty. Before Seven could even register the hollow sound of the dry fire, a heavy caliber round struck him directly in the forehead. The room spun violently. The ceiling vanished into darkness. The roaring chaos of the garage faded into an absolute, freezing silence. And in that final moment before darkness took him, Seven didn't think about the money. He thought about Megan. Daddy's coming home. Then everything went black.Expand

Dead Man's Trigger Chapter 9: Bobby Trapped
The Gothic stone arches of X City College of Law loomed under the heavy gray afternoon sky. Seven sat on a weathered stone bench across the campus quad, a disposable coffee cup clutched in his hands. To any passing student, he was just another tired citizen watching the afternoon rush. Behind the casual posture, his eyes were working with military precision. He was mapping the terrain, logging security camera blind spots, entry points, and possible fallback routes. His civilian clothes felt light compared to his tactical vest, but his instincts weren't replaced. Then his gaze locked onto the wide marble steps of the main library.Three men in matching charcoal suits were coming down the stairs in rigid, synchronized formation. Moving slightly ahead of them was a tall woman in a black tactical jacket and cargo pants. Seven's chest tightened, a cold knot forming in his stomach. Even without his tactical HUD, he recognized that unyielding, disciplined posture. At the bottom step, the wo

Dead Man's Trigger Chapter 8: A Desperate Dash
The stairwell door slammed shut behind her, and the sirens dropped to a dull wail. Mephisto ran down the rain-dark alley in her bare feet, the thin hospital gown plastered to her skin, too focused on the man in the long coat to feel the cold.A Soul Eater. She hadn't seen one in fifty years. The last had tracked her to a village in the Alps, and when it was over his soul had tasted like ash. This one had stood in front of her with his pistols raised and his finger tight on the trigger, and then a child had screamed and he had lowered both guns as if she'd stopped existing. She had watched the light on his wrist flash red just before he did it. Whatever they'd given him, it had failed at the worst possible moment, and he hadn't cared.Nobody in her long history had ever lowered a weapon for someone else. Her mind kept circling back to it, to the way his face had changed, and she couldn't tell whether it should frighten her or not.Her apartment sat above a laundromat at the edge of t

Dead Man's Trigger Chapter 7: A Human Trail
Seven burst through the smoking doorway of Room 412. The ceiling had come down across the bed, small fires crawled along the vinyl floor, and somewhere under the wreckage a machine was screaming its alarm into the dark. Then he saw a small pale hand moving in the dust."Megan!"He shoved his pistols into their holsters and tore the drywall off the bed with both hands. She lay there with the ventilator line snapped loose at her throat, her mouth open, her chest hitching in short, useless pulls. Her eyes found him anyway."I've got you," he said. "I've got you, baby."He lifted her out of the debris. She weighed almost nothing, and she was warm. He held her against his chest and felt it, the small, frantic rise and fall against his vest, and for a moment he forgot the fire and the alarm and the footsteps pounding up the corridor. He'd spent so many nights staring at that chest waiting for it to move. It was moving now."Daddy's here," he whispered into her hair. "I'm not going anywhe

Dead Man's Trigger Chapter 6: Mephisto
The motorcycle skidded sideways into the ambulance bay of the X City Medical Center, throwing up a wall of dirty water. Seven didn't even wait for the kickstand. He let the bike crash to the pavement as he sprinted through the sliding glass doors, his long leather coat billowing behind him. The hospital lobby was already bleeding. Two security guards lay motionless near the reception desk, and panicked cries echoed from the upper floors. Gustav's cleanup crew was already here. They weren't extracting a target; they were clearing a floor. Seven took the stairs three at a time, his enhanced legs driving him upward like pneumatic pistons. By the time he breached the heavy fire doors of the fourth-floor ICU, he was greeted by the harsh clack-clack of assault rifles. Three heavily armed mercenaries in gray tactical gear were moving down the corridor, firing indiscriminately into the nurse’s stations. Megan’s room was at the end of that hall. Rage, cold and absolute, took over. Seve
