The motorcycle skidded sideways into the ambulance bay of the X City Medical Center, throwing up a wall of dirty water.

Seven didn't even wait for the kickstand. He let the bike crash to the pavement as he sprinted through the sliding glass doors, his long leather coat billowing behind him.

The hospital lobby was already bleeding.

Two security guards lay motionless near the reception desk, and panicked cries echoed from the upper floors. Gustav's cleanup crew was already here. They weren't extracting a target; they were clearing a floor.

Seven took the stairs three at a time, his enhanced legs driving him upward like pneumatic pistons.

By the time he breached the heavy fire doors of the fourth-floor ICU, he was greeted by the harsh clack-clack of assault rifles.

Three heavily armed mercenaries in gray tactical gear were moving down the corridor, firing indiscriminately into the nurse’s stations.

Megan’s room was at the end of that hall.

Rage, cold and absolute, took over. Seven drew his twin pistols. The blue runes on the polymer grips flashed to life as the Soul Watch synced with his nervous system.

ACTIVATING FUNCTION: TIME DILATION & KINETIC OVERLOAD

The world instantly slowed to an absolute crawl. Muzzle flashes from the mercenaries' rifles froze into jagged, orange cones of light. The flying brass casings hung suspended in the air like gold droplets.

Seven moved like a phantom through a museum of frozen violence. He stepped into the hallway, his boots making no sound in the dilated reality. He tracked the first mercenary, bringing his right pistol to eye level.

BOOM!

The localized thunderclap ripped through the corridor. The kinetic bolt took the mercenary squarely in the chest, lifting his heavy frame off the ground and throwing him through a reinforced glass partition.

Without pausing, Seven adjusted his stance, his left hand snapping toward the second shooter. BOOM! The round shattered the man’s weapon and threw him backward into the wall, unconscious before he could register the impact.

The third mercenary’s pupils were just beginning to dilate in slow motion as he realized his team was vanishing.

Seven closed the distance in a fraction of a millisecond. He didn't waste a bullet. He brought the heavy butt of his left pistol down hard against the man's helmet, shattering the ballistic visor and dropping him instantly.

Time snapped back to normal. The three bodies hit the floor almost simultaneously with a heavy, chaotic clatter.

But as Seven raised his weapons to scan for more threats, a searing, blinding heat erupted from his left wrist. It felt like molten steel was pouring into his veins. He gasped, dropping to one knee as his vision flickered with warning static.

His Soul Watch face was flashing a violent, blinding crimson, accompanied by a harsh, repeated audio chime.

WARNING: CORE SYSTEM OVERHEAT

CRITICAL LIMIT EXCEEDED: MAXIMUM SKILL USE EXCEEDED WITHIN 12-HOUR WINDOW.

ENHANCED SPEED DISENGAGED.

COOLDOWN INITIATED: 11 HOURS, 59 MINUTES REMAINING.

"Damn it," Seven growled through his respirator mask, his muscles trembling as the artificial adrenaline was forcefully ripped from his system. His body felt heavy again, human. He tried to force the skill to activate, but the interface remained stubbornly locked in a cooling cycle.

He was out of supernatural tricks. From here on out, he only had his standard SEAL training and his bare hands.

A sudden explosion shattered the doors of ICU Room 412—Megan’s room.

The shockwave blew a cloud of plaster dust into the hallway. Through the haze, a young woman stumbled out of the wreckage of the adjacent room. She didn't look like a cosmic deity; she looked like a patient. She was wearing a pale hospital gown, her left arm wrapped in sterile gauze where an IV had been ripped out.

But as she raised her head, Seven froze.

Her eyes weren't human. For a split second, they flared with a brilliant, infinite cosmic light—an ancient, swirling galaxy trapped behind a mortal gaze.

ALERT: SOUL SIGNATURE VERIFIED. TARGET ID: MEPHISTO.

Mephisto locked eyes with Seven. She looked at his faceless black mask, then down at the smoking, rune-carved twin pistols in his hands. She recognized him instantly as a hunter.

Despite her injuries, she moved with an unnatural, fluid grace, vaulting over a ruined gurney and bolting toward the rear emergency exit stairwell.

Seven’s sniper instincts screamed at him to give chase. He raised his right pistol, aligning the iron sights with her retreating silhouette. His finger tightened on the trigger. He had a clean shot. He could disable her right now, deliver her soul, and secure the cure.

"Daddy!"

A weak, terrified cry cut through the smoke from inside Room 412.

Seven’s heart stopped. The gun trembled in his hand. He looked down the empty stairwell where Mephisto had just vanished, then back toward the burning doorway of his daughter's room.

The calculation didn't even take a millisecond.

Seven lowered his weapons, spun on his heel, and abandoned the hunt, sprinting directly into the fire engulfed door.

The Gothic stone arches of X City College of Law loomed under the heavy gray afternoon sky. Seven sat on a weathered stone bench across the campus quad, a disposable coffee cup clutched in his hands. To any passing student, he was just another tired citizen watching the afternoon rush. Behind the casual posture, his eyes were working with military precision. He was mapping the terrain, logging security camera blind spots, entry points, and possible fallback routes. His civilian clothes felt light compared to his tactical vest, but his instincts weren't replaced. Then his gaze locked onto the wide marble steps of the main library.Three men in matching charcoal suits were coming down the stairs in rigid, synchronized formation. Moving slightly ahead of them was a tall woman in a black tactical jacket and cargo pants. Seven's chest tightened, a cold knot forming in his stomach. Even without his tactical HUD, he recognized that unyielding, disciplined posture. At the bottom step, the wo

The stairwell door slammed shut behind her, and the sirens dropped to a dull wail. Mephisto ran down the rain-dark alley in her bare feet, the thin hospital gown plastered to her skin, too focused on the man in the long coat to feel the cold.A Soul Eater. She hadn't seen one in fifty years. The last had tracked her to a village in the Alps, and when it was over his soul had tasted like ash. This one had stood in front of her with his pistols raised and his finger tight on the trigger, and then a child had screamed and he had lowered both guns as if she'd stopped existing. She had watched the light on his wrist flash red just before he did it. Whatever they'd given him, it had failed at the worst possible moment, and he hadn't cared.Nobody in her long history had ever lowered a weapon for someone else. • Chapter 7: A Human Trail

Seven burst through the smoking doorway of Room 412. The ceiling had come down across the bed, small fires crawled along the vinyl floor, and somewhere under the wreckage a machine was screaming its alarm into the dark. Then he saw a small pale hand moving in the dust."Megan!"He shoved his pistols into their holsters and tore the drywall off the bed with both hands. She lay there with the ventilator line snapped loose at her throat, her mouth open, her chest hitching in short, useless pulls. Her eyes found him anyway."I've got you," he said. "I've got you, baby."He lifted her out of the debris. She weighed almost nothing, and she was warm. He held her against his chest and felt it, the small, frantic rise and fall against his vest, and for a moment he forgot the fire and the alarm and the footsteps pounding up the corridor. He'd spent so many nights staring at that chest waiting for it to move. It was moving now."Daddy's here," he whispered into her hair. "I'm not going anywhe

  • Chapter 5: The Trap

The sports bike screamed down the rain-slicked highway, a streak of black and leather slicing through the midnight traffic. Rain tore at Seven’s long leather coat, but behind his matte-black mask, his breathing remained deep and even. Up ahead, the silver Mercedes sedan was weaving violently between lanes, clipping bumpers and leaving a trail of shattered taillights, a desperate driver trying to put distance between himself and the ghost chasing him. Seven twisted the throttle. The bike surged forward, closing the gap with terrifying speed. Suddenly, the passenger window of the Mercedes rolled down. One of Gustav’s surviving thugs leaned out, a compact submachine gun clutched in his hands. Rat-tat-tat-tat! A muzzle flash strobed in the darkness. A line of automatic fire chewed up the asphalt inches from Seven's front tire. Seven didn't flinch. His supercharged reflexes took over. He leaned the bike hard to the left, scraping his knee pad against the concrete barrier as he dodged

  • Chapter 4: Bang Bang

The transition didn’t feel like falling. It felt like being violently compressed into a single atom and shattered across reality. Then, the world roared back to life. The pressurized silence of the hangar vanished, instantly replaced by the deafening, metallic bark of Gustav’s Desert Eagle. White concrete dust exploded into the air. Time slowed to an agonizing crawl. Seven could see the supersonic distortion of the heavy caliber bullet rippling through the air, heading directly for his forehead. His newly supercharged central nervous system didn't just register the threat—it anticipated the geometry. Without a conscious thought, his weight shifted. He spun his torso fractions of an inch, tilting his head back into a fluid, military-honed dodge. The bullet grazed his cheek, tearing through the empty air where his skull had been a millisecond prior, and slammed into the wall behind him. Seven hit the oil-stained garage floor, rolling into a tight tactical stance behind the second
