The Gothic stone arches of X City College of Law loomed under the heavy gray afternoon sky. Seven sat on a weathered stone bench across the campus quad, a disposable coffee cup clutched in his hands.

To any passing student, he was just another tired citizen watching the afternoon rush. Behind the casual posture, his eyes were working with military precision.

He was mapping the terrain, logging security camera blind spots, entry points, and possible fallback routes. His civilian clothes felt light compared to his tactical vest, but his instincts weren't replaced.

Then his gaze locked onto the wide marble steps of the main library.

Three men in matching charcoal suits were coming down the stairs in rigid, synchronized formation. Moving slightly ahead of them was a tall woman in a black tactical jacket and cargo pants.

Seven's chest tightened, a cold knot forming in his stomach. Even without his tactical HUD, he recognized that unyielding, disciplined posture.

At the bottom step, the woman halted. In one almost mechanical motion, all four of them lifted their left arms and checked their wrists.

Seven slowly lowered his head, tracking them through the reflection in a nearby window until the squad disappeared behind the administrative faculty building.

The Council of Six hadn't waited for him to recover. They had sent a secondary clean-up squad to sweep X City.

He couldn't move during the day. With his Soul Watch locked in its twelve-hour cooldown, a confrontation with four fully operational hunters would be suicide. He needed the dark. He needed his edge back.

Midnight brought a heavy fog that swallowed the campus and turned the streetlamps into a sickly yellow haze.

Seven slipped through a shadowed basement window of the law building, his boots landing on the linoleum without a sound. He moved through the pitch-black corridors with a ghost's ease, bypassing the motion sensors until he reached the third floor.

Professor Marcus Vance. Department Chair of Criminal Jurisprudence.

Seven pulled a set of tension wrenches from his jacket pocket, slid them into the lock, and applied steady, practiced pressure. The deadbolt gave way with a soft click. He stepped inside, shut the heavy oak door behind him, and took a small tactical penlight from his pocket.

The office was massive, lined with towering bookshelves, leather-bound volumes, and polished mahogany furniture.

Seven ignored the main desk and went straight for the locked metal filing cabinets in the far corner. He popped the lock in under ten seconds and ran his fingers through the alphabetized academic folders.

He found it under the M section.

It was a thick, pristine dossier documenting a student's dominance over the law school's curriculum. He opened the folder, and his narrow beam of light fell on a passport photo attached to the top right corner of the first page.

It was her. The same ageless, striking face from the hospital corridor. The name printed beneath it read Melissa Andre. Seven whispered it aloud.

According to the records, Melissa was a top-tier prodigy. She had completed her undergraduate degree in record time and was maintaining a flawless 4.0 GPA at the law school.

The file was packed with clippings of her achievements: mock trial championships, published essays on constitutional loopholes, and a personal recommendation letter signed by Professor Vance himself, praising her "superhuman comprehension of systemic evasion."

Seven stared at the photograph as a grim realization settled in. She had spent years running from the Council of Six, and her solution was to master the mortal world's laws and hide in plain sight.

Suddenly, a floorboard creaked in the hallway.

Seven froze. His hand darted inside his jacket and closed around the cold polymer grip of his pistol. On his left wrist, a faint, rhythmic vibration began to thrum against his skin.

A dim amber light bled through his sleeve. The twelve-hour countdown had just hit zero. His powers were back online.

But before he could command the Soul Watch to engage his tactical gear, a tiny, rapid electronic beeping cut through the silence.

It wasn't coming from his wrist. It was coming from beneath the mahogany desk.

His sniper instincts screamed a warning. He dropped the dossier and lunged toward the sound, and his light caught a heavy block of military-grade C4 wired to a digital timer blinking in the dark.

00:00:01

The trap had been laid long before he ever set foot in the building.

The office door burst open. The three Soul Eaters in charcoal suits stood on the threshold with their weapons drawn, eyes locked on Seven in the dark. They had tracked his signature right into the killing zone.

"Seven, drop your—" the lead hunter began.

The timer hit zero.

The world was swallowed by a blinding white flash. The charge detonated with a deafening roar that tore the mahogany desk into splinters. The shockwave ripped through the floorboards and blew the reinforced concrete walls outward into the quad.

The three hunters didn't even have time to raise their arms. The blast hit them dead-on and hurled them backward down the blazing corridor as the entire third floor began to collapse in a rain of burning debris and shattered glass.

As the ceiling came down, Seven felt the Soul Watch trigger its defense protocols, flooding his system with a surge of blue lightning. But the force of the collapsing building was already dragging him down into the burning abyss.

The stairwell door slammed shut behind her, and the sirens dropped to a dull wail. The last had tracked her to a village in the Alps, and when it was over his soul had tasted like ash. This one had stood in front of her with his pistols raised and his finger tight on the trigger, and then a child had screamed and he had lowered both guns as if she'd stopped existing. She had watched the light on his wrist flash red just before he did it. Whatever they'd given him, it had failed at the worst possible moment, and he hadn't cared.Nobody in her long history had ever lowered a weapon for someone else. • Chapter 7: A Human Trail

Seven burst through the smoking doorway of Room 412. The ceiling had come down across the bed, small fires crawled along the vinyl floor, and somewhere under the wreckage a machine was screaming its alarm into the dark. Then he saw a small pale hand moving in the dust."Megan!"He shoved his pistols into their holsters and tore the drywall off the bed with both hands. She lay there with the ventilator line snapped loose at her throat, her mouth open, her chest hitching in short, useless pulls. Her eyes found him anyway."I've got you," he said. "I've got you, baby."He lifted her out of the debris. She weighed almost nothing, and she was warm. He held her against his chest and felt it, the small, frantic rise and fall against his vest, and for a moment he forgot the fire and the alarm and the footsteps pounding up the corridor. He'd spent so many nights staring at that chest waiting for it to move. It was moving now."Daddy's here," he whispered into her hair. "I'm not going anywhe

  • Chapter 6: Mephisto

The motorcycle skidded sideways into the ambulance bay of the X City Medical Center, throwing up a wall of dirty water. Seven didn't even wait for the kickstand. He let the bike crash to the pavement as he sprinted through the sliding glass doors, his long leather coat billowing behind him. The hospital lobby was already bleeding. Two security guards lay motionless near the reception desk, and panicked cries echoed from the upper floors. Gustav's cleanup crew was already here. They weren't extracting a target; they were clearing a floor. Seven took the stairs three at a time, his enhanced legs driving him upward like pneumatic pistons. By the time he breached the heavy fire doors of the fourth-floor ICU, he was greeted by the harsh clack-clack of assault rifles. Three heavily armed mercenaries in gray tactical gear were moving down the corridor, firing indiscriminately into the nurse’s stations. Megan’s room was at the end of that hall. Rage, cold and absolute, took over. Seve

  • Chapter 5: The Trap

The sports bike screamed down the rain-slicked highway, a streak of black and leather slicing through the midnight traffic. Rain tore at Seven’s long leather coat, but behind his matte-black mask, his breathing remained deep and even. Up ahead, the silver Mercedes sedan was weaving violently between lanes, clipping bumpers and leaving a trail of shattered taillights, a desperate driver trying to put distance between himself and the ghost chasing him. Seven twisted the throttle. The bike surged forward, closing the gap with terrifying speed. Suddenly, the passenger window of the Mercedes rolled down. One of Gustav’s surviving thugs leaned out, a compact submachine gun clutched in his hands. Rat-tat-tat-tat! A muzzle flash strobed in the darkness. A line of automatic fire chewed up the asphalt inches from Seven's front tire. Seven didn't flinch. His supercharged reflexes took over. He leaned the bike hard to the left, scraping his knee pad against the concrete barrier as he dodged

  • Chapter 4: Bang Bang

The transition didn’t feel like falling. It felt like being violently compressed into a single atom and shattered across reality. Then, the world roared back to life. The pressurized silence of the hangar vanished, instantly replaced by the deafening, metallic bark of Gustav’s Desert Eagle. White concrete dust exploded into the air. Time slowed to an agonizing crawl. Seven could see the supersonic distortion of the heavy caliber bullet rippling through the air, heading directly for his forehead. His newly supercharged central nervous system didn't just register the threat—it anticipated the geometry. Without a conscious thought, his weight shifted. He spun his torso fractions of an inch, tilting his head back into a fluid, military-honed dodge. The bullet grazed his cheek, tearing through the empty air where his skull had been a millisecond prior, and slammed into the wall behind him. Seven hit the oil-stained garage floor, rolling into a tight tactical stance behind the second
