Chapter 1: The Breakfast Catastrophe
The morning sunlight filtered through the dust motes of Gabriel’s apartment, illuminating a space that was slowly succumbing to the entropy of his presence. Gabriel Santos groaned, pulling a pillow over his head as his stomach let out a sound like a dying engine. It was a deep, guttural growl that resonated through his hollow ribs.
"Seriously? Again?" he muttered to the empty room, his voice raspy with sleep. He kicked the blankets aside, his feet hitting the cold hardwood. "Fine. I’m up. Happy now?"
He wandered into the kitchen, his hair a tangled mess of dark curls. The kitchenette was a cramped alcove of dented appliances and stacks of unwashed mugs. He hadn't bothered to grocery shop in three days, but he knew for a fact there was a singular, lonely egg sitting in the fridge—a relic from his last attempt at domesticity.
"Okay, Gabe. Keep it together. It’s just an egg. How hard can it be?"
He opened the refrigerator door. The light flickered, dying out with a pathetic hum. He stared at the carton.
"One egg. You can do this. Don't think about the thermodynamics. Don't think about the latent mana in your bloodstream. Just... protein."
He grabbed a small, non-stick pan, fumbled with the stove knob until it clicked, and then reached for the egg with trembling fingers. His hunger was a physical weight, a sharp ache that seemed to pulse in time with the thrum of his own magic—a chaotic, unrefined energy that felt like a swarm of angry bees under his skin.
"Why is this so difficult?" he whispered, his frustration mounting. He tapped the egg against the edge of the counter. It didn't crack. He tapped it harder. Nothing.
"Seriously?" he hissed, his grip tightening.
He took a breath, trying to calm the jittery sparks dancing at his fingertips. Every time he felt this way—hungry, tired, annoyed—the world around him seemed to lose its structural integrity. The air turned heavy, charged with static that made the hair on his arms stand up.
"Just... crack... you stupid thing," he growled.
He slammed the egg against the side of the pan with a bit more force than intended. The shell shattered, but it didn't just break; the impact triggered something. A sudden, violent surge of raw kinetic energy erupted from his palm, bypassing the egg entirely and lashing out at the world.
CRACK.
It wasn't the sound of an egg breaking. It was the sound of a wall being pulverized by a battering ram.
"Oh, crap!"
The kitchen exploded. The cabinets didn't just splinter; they vaporized into sawdust. The stove was hurled backward, slamming into the wall with enough force to crater the drywall. A shockwave of pure, unfiltered magical pressure tore through the room, sending shards of porcelain and stray cutlery flying like shrapnel.
Gabriel stumbled back, shielding his face with his arms as the ceiling light fixture shattered above him. The floor groaned under the sudden shift in gravity, and for a heartbeat, everything was silent—a suspended moment of chaos.
"Did I just... did I just blow up the kitchen?"
He stood there, chest heaving, staring at the ruin of his living space. The drywall was gone, revealing the structural studs of the campus housing complex. Dust hung thick in the air, sparkling with the lingering, jagged remnants of his magic.
Then, from the hallway outside, came a rapid, frantic knocking.
"Gabriel? Gabe! What the hell happened in there? Are you okay?"
The door handle rattled violently. Gabriel scrambled to his feet, wincing as he stepped over a pile of broken cabinet doors.
"Maya? Uh, hold on! Don't come in yet!"
"Don't come in? The whole building just shook! I’m coming in, you idiot!"
The door didn't just open; it was forced inward as Maya Petrova, his neighbor and the only person on campus brave enough to check on his well-being, pushed past the jamb. She froze the second she caught sight of the kitchen.
Her eyes went wide, scanning the shredded drywall and the remnants of the stove. She took a step forward, her hands glowing with a soft, steady sapphire light.
"Gabriel Santos," she breathed, her voice trembling between annoyance and genuine fear. "What did you do this time?"
Gabriel rubbed the back of his neck, looking down at his shoes, which were covered in a fine layer of pulverized plaster. "I, uh, I think I tried to make breakfast."
Maya stared at him, her expression unreadable. She raised her hands, and the sapphire light rippled out, forming a shimmering, translucent dome that encapsulated the room. The stray sparks of his magic, still hissing like dying embers, slammed into the barrier and were instantly snuffed out.
"You were trying to make breakfast," she repeated, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "With a kinetic blast? What was the recipe? Destruction and sorrow?"
"I was hungry!" he defended, his face heating up with a mix of shame and annoyance. "I haven't eaten since yesterday. The egg wouldn't crack, and then—I don't know, it just happened."
Maya let out a long, weary sigh, the barrier dimming as the air in the room finally stabilized. She gestured to the wreckage. "You’re going to be evicted, Gabe. Again. Do you have any idea how much this is going to cost to repair? The school board is already looking for an excuse to kick you out of the scholarship program."
Gabriel slumped against what remained of the counter. "I know. I’m sorry. I just... I can’t seem to turn it off. Even the simple stuff, it’s like my magic is waiting for an excuse to tear the place down."
Maya walked over, carefully stepping over a shattered frying pan. She looked at him, really looked at him, and saw the exhausted, desperate kid beneath the aura of dangerous power. She softened.
"You’re an idiot, but you’re my idiot," she muttered, reaching out to brush a speck of dust off his shoulder. "Why didn't you just ask me for help before you started playing with cosmic forces?"
"Because I wanted to be normal," he whispered, the shame finally bleeding into his tone. "I wanted to cook like a normal person."
"Well, look where that got you," she countered, gesturing to the ruin.
"Yeah. Great. Another successful morning."
Maya shook her head, though a faint, playful smirk touched the corners of her lips. She snapped her fingers, and a small, localized restoration spell began to knit the cracks in the floor back together. It wouldn't fix the walls, but it was a start.
"Look," she said, leaning against the counter. "I've got a bag of groceries in my room. Real food. Not that sad, singular egg."
Gabriel looked up, hopeful. "Really?"
"Yes, really. But here is the deal." She pointed a finger at him, her tone dead serious. "I’m going to teach you how to cook. Actual, physical cooking. No magic, no kinetic energy, and definitely no blowing up the dorms."
Gabriel cracked a small, hesitant smile. "You’re going to teach me?"
"If you don't stop blowing things up, I’m going to personally make sure the next thing you blast is your own pride," she said, her eyes twinkling. "Deal?"
"Deal," Gabriel agreed, his stomach giving one last, final rumble. "But we’re doing pancakes. I refuse to fail at pancakes."
"Pancakes it is," Maya laughed, turning toward the door. "But if you get flour on the ceiling, you’re on your own."

The Alchemist's Kitchen Chapter 10: The Midnight Snack
The fluorescent lights of the communal kitchen hummed with a low, rhythmic vibration that seemed to match the quiet settling of the dorm. Gabriel sat at the small prep table, his notebook splayed open. Beside him, a container of actual, non-sabotaged leftovers—a simple pasta dish they’d managed to scavenge from the cafeteria—sat between them.Maya was currently doodling in the margin of her own textbook, her movements fluid and unhurried."You’re staring at that physics problem again, Gabe," she said, not looking up from her page. "If you glare at it any harder, the ink might actually give up and rewrite itself."Gabriel huffed, leaning back in his creaky wooden chair. "I’m not glaring. I’m analyzing. There’s a difference.""Is there? Because your eyebrows have been doing a very impressive impression of a thunderstorm for the last ten minutes." She nudged the container toward him with her elbow. "Eat. You haven't touched your food since we sat down."Gabriel picked up his fork, twirli

The Alchemist's Kitchen Chapter 9: Following the Lead
The bucket of shimmering, pink sludge let out a faint, mournful chirp as Maya set it down on the tile floor of their dormitory hallway. It looked like a neon-colored mistake, and it was currently leaking a faint, strawberry-scented smoke.Gabriel stared at it, his jaw tight. "So. The House of Vane. They’re really pulling out the stops for a scholarship student with a history of kitchen explosions.""It’s not just a prank, Gabe. This is a targeted effort to make you look like a threat," Maya said, her eyes flashing with a cold, analytical light. She stood up straight, brushing a bit of glittery slime off her sleeve. "Think about the logic. If you lose control in front of the wrong people, the school has grounds to void your enrollment. You’re not being sabotaged because you’re a nuisance; you’re being sabotaged because you’re a problem that needs to be removed."Gabriel paced the length of the hall, his boots clicking sharply against the linoleum. "I know who did it. It wasn't Leo. He’

The Alchemist's Kitchen Chapter 8: Sabotage in the Kitchen
The lecture had ended in an atmosphere thick with unspoken electricity, leaving Gabriel with a headache that pulsed in time with the faint, dissonant hum emanating from Leo’s desk. But the moment the bell rang, he and Maya had vanished into the corridor, bypassing the front of the room where the air tasted like sour ozone. Now, standing in the communal kitchen, the silence of the dorm felt like a reprieve. Or it would have, if the pantry didn't look like a crime scene."Okay," Gabriel said, his voice echoing slightly against the bare shelves. "I could have sworn the flour was on the left, and the onions were in the ceramic crock. Where are they?"Maya stepped inside, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the empty space. She reached out, her fingers dancing in the air near the shelf edge, leaving a faint, shimmering trail of sapphire light. "They didn't just disappear, Gabe. Look at the dust patterns. Someone cleared this out with a gust spell, likely within the last hour."Gabriel felt h

The Alchemist's Kitchen Chapter 7: Unwanted Attention
The transition from the intense, meditative rhythm of the communal kitchen to the morning rush of the Academy was, for Gabriel, like stepping off a calm pier into a turbulent, freezing sea. He walked down the corridor toward the lecture hall with his hands deep in his pockets, his shoulders set in a loose, practiced slouch. He could still feel the faint, humming echo of his own mana—a steady, rhythmic vibration that felt less like a threat and more like a quiet heartbeat. Then, the hallway noise hit him. It wasn't just the chatter of students; it was the specific, sharp-edged mockery that he had spent his entire academic career trying to avoid."Look, everyone! It’s the kitchen-king of the west wing!"Gabriel slowed his pace, his eyes shifting to the group gathered near the atrium entrance. Leo and his small, smirking retinue were waiting, leaning against the lockers with the casual cruelty that only bored, privileged students could perfect."Is the apron on under the jacket, Gabe?" L
