Loud chattering emanated from the local pub where the elite kids had fun, partying most of the time.

Except that night was different.

It was Sawyer’s girlfriend’s birthday and he was certain that she was in there partying with her friends.

He had been asking her all week for her birthday plans, she either ignored him or changed the topic.

With that he assumed that she wanted him to prepare a surprise for her birthday and he stopped bothering her about it.

After getting off his temp job, Sawyer pulled out his savings for his state exam to apply into the military.

He used the money to buy presents and room decor then he set them up in her room.

Ola meant the world to him, when everyone else wanted nothing to do with him, she had walked up to him and asked him out and their relationship was on its way to hitting ten months.

That was why he had set his heart to making her birthday special.

Sawyer had set the decoration and gifts. He planned to put candles on her cake around when she should be back at home.

He looked at the clock, she was two hours later than when she normally arrived at home unless she was at….

He grabbed his coat and made his way to the local pub downtown to check on her.

Sawyer walked in and he saw Ola and her friends twerking and grinding against other men.

He was devastated at the sight, he called her name several times because he didn’t want to go into the spotlight, but she could not hear him because of the jarring music.

Moving over to where she was, he pulled her a bit from the dance floor.

Ola was now facing him, looking cheerful, but as soon as she saw Sawyer's irritated face, a frown appeared on her face.

“It is odd seeing you here.” She mentioned calmly, with her mouth reeking of alcohol.

“I can't believe you came here on your birthday. I asked you for your plans and you didn't tell me you had this in store. Why are you hiding things from me?” Sawyer demanded.

Ola’s tone changed from a calm to a harsh one, “Since when did I have to tell you about my plans for my birthday? Unlike you, I have friends that can throw me a fun party, even if I had no plans of celebrating in the first place.”

“But you still should have mentioned this to me! I am your boyfriend!” he raised his voice at her.

She scoffed, “You are acting up as if you would be able to throw me a party like this if I mentioned that this was what I wanted. It’s not like you have the money.”

Sawyer was too stunned to reply to her, he had been working months as a paper boy to make ends meet, satisfy Ola’s needs, and save up for his military exams.

For her birthday, he took temporary jobs as a waiter, kitchen boy and even a manservant just to throw up the surprise he had set up back at her apartment, when the money wasn’t enough he touched his savings for her.

Ola’s friends noticed her absence on the dance floor and they approached her and Sawyer where they were standing.

Gracie, Ola’s biggest rival in the friend group was the first to speak, “Is this the famous paper boy Ola is toying with?”

The other girls nodded in agreement.

“Tch Tch.” Gracie clicked her teeth together, as she glanced at Sawyer from head to toe, “This is the first time in my life seeing someone embody wretchedness like this. I can't believe our Ola is really dating this guy.”

Gracie added the last line to mock her.

Ola was starting to feel ashamed, Gracie was always nitpicking about her and she had tried to keep Sawyer off her face  because she knew she would mock her for being with him.

“Gracie, who says she’s dating him? Then she faced Sawyer, “And you, wh o invited you here?” Ann, Ola’s best friend hissed in Sawyer’s face. “Did you come here to embarrass Ola in front of everyone?” Ann jumped in her best friend’s defense to save her face.

Sawyer did not bother responding to them as he was used to them talking down on him for no reason, and in Baltimore, the gap between the rich and poor was wide.

If he replied to the wrong person, he might suffer for it. He could lose his job or his limb. He wasn’t about to get into trouble for a matter he could endure.

“Ola. Let’s just go home.” he said quietly. All he had on his mind was to take her back home and show her everything he got her.

Just then someone in the crowd yelled, “Sergeant Smith Gunshot has arrived.”

The countenance in the air changed and every girl in the pub rushed to meet the Sergeant, including his girl.

Sawyer stared at Smith Gunshot, he was wearing his military uniform, with a stoic look on his face and his hair neatly brushed to the side.

“Of course the girls will want him.” Sawyer thought to himself. Gunshot was currently living Sawyer’s dream.

He had always dreamed of being a sergeant after passing his military exam.

His eyes were still on Smith when he saw his girl link arms with the Sergeant that just walked in.

What was their relationship? Did he throw this expensive party for her ?

His blood boiled and he marched over to them angrily. “I said it is time to leave, Ola. What part do you not understand?”

“Who is this?” Smith asked Ola.

Ann knew about Smith's temper, if he found out Ola was still dating Sawyer, he would lock her up in the dungeon

“Ola has broken up with you for some time now. Why are you lurking around her, you stalker!” She yelled.

Ola nodded in Ann’s direction to praise while Sawyer just stood there, baldly dazed. “Stalker?”

“Yes, your poor ass tricked her into dating you but when she found out that you couldn’t take care of her and you still took money from her. She broke up with you. Now you are stalking her! This is not fair.”

“Stalking is a punishable offence, you will die by guillotine if this is confirmed to be true.” Smith said in a stern voice to Sawyer when he faced Ola, “The words your friend had just told us about that man, are they true.?”

Ola’s palm became sweaty, she had managed to charm Smith’s heart.

If she lost him that night, he would go straight into Gracie’s arms and that would be her loss since he was courting the two of them.

In the worst case, she would also be spending a few months in jail for tricking him.

Sawyer looked in her direction, waiting for her answer, they exchanged a glance, he swallowed hard.

She looked away from him and faced Sergeant Smith Gunshot, with tears rolling down her cheeks, “Yes, Sergeant Smith, everything Ann has said is true.”

  • Chapter 55 - First Counterattack

The morning after the Midnight Market infiltration, the atmosphere inside the Vance Estate remained incredibly tense. Victor had barely slept, his eyes bloodshot and heavy. Elena was still furious, her quiet anger radiating through the halls. Wang kept talking animatedly about the rampaging auction beast, while Chi kept insisting that it wasn't the important part of their escape.Sawyer ignored all of them. He was too busy reading.Stacks of copied notes and messy sketches covered the large mahogany study table trade records, shipping manifests, independent merchant reports, and hidden warehouse schedules. It was everything he had meticulously memorized from the Voss Alliance records before Darius Kane had interrupted them.Victor watched him work in silence for nearly an hour. Finally, his curiosity won out. "What exactly are you looking for?"Sawyer didn't look up from a detailed map of the city's trade routes. "A weakness."The answer surprised everyone in the room, because until n

The journey back to the Vance Estate was quiet far quieter than usual. Even Wang had stopped talking, which was perhaps the clearest sign that tonight had changed everything. The Midnight Market had been shocking enough, but the records had been worse. And the name hidden within those stolen ledgers... that changed the entire situation. The eastern sky was beginning to brighten when they finally arrived. The estate gates swung open immediately, Victor had clearly been waiting. The merchant was standing in the courtyard, still fully dressed, still awake, and still pacing. The moment he spotted them, relief flashed across his face, followed immediately by sharp irritation. "Do you know what time it is?"Wang blinked. "We almost died.""I was worried.""We almost died."Victor pointed a finger at him. "And whose fault was that?"Wang opened his mouth, then closed it, because he genuinely wasn't sure. The brewing argument ended abruptly when Victor noticed Sawyer's expression. The young m

  • Chapter 53 - Tell me you had a plan.

The moment Darius Kane disappeared, Sawyer moved."We're leaving."There was no hesitation in his voice, no uncertainty, and no discussion. Just a swift decision. Both Wang and Chi immediately understood the gravity of the situation.Wang glanced toward the heavy door. "You think he'll come back?"Sawyer smoothly closed the ledger and returned it to its exact place on the shelf. "Eventually."Chi swallowed hard. "And when he does?"Sawyer looked at him, his gaze piercing. "We don't want to be here."That was all the answer either brother needed. The trio quickly left the records room. The corridor outside remained empty for now, but Sawyer's instincts were screaming at him. Something had fundamentally changed, he could feel it in the air.The Midnight Market no longer felt relaxed, distracted, or careless. The ambient atmosphere had become tense and alert, like a massive predatory beast waking from a deep sleep. As they hurried through the restricted corridors, Sawyer noticed the guar

  • Chapter 52 -   D.K

The room fell silent."I don't recognize you."The voice was calm. Too calm. It was the distinct kind of calm that usually belonged to incredibly dangerous people.Sawyer slowly turned around. The moment he saw the man standing in the doorway, he understood something immediately, this wasn't a merchant, this wasn't a clerk, and this definitely wasn't an ordinary guard. The man carried himself differently. He carried himself like a soldiera real one. He stood nearly a head taller than most men, possessing broad shoulders and a powerful, conditioned build. Several faded scars crossed his face, one ran jaggedly from his jaw to his temple, while another disappeared beneath his high collar. His leather-gloved hand rested casually on the hilt of a heavy sword. He wasn't acting threatening, nor did he seem nervous. He looked entirely comfortable, as if violence was something he dealt with every single day.Wang swallowed hard. Even Chi looked profoundly uneasy, which was saying something, th

  • Chapter 51 - The Voss Alliance

The Alliance. The words lingered in Sawyer's mind long after the auction ended. It wasn't because the name itself was inherently grand, but because it finally gave shape to the enemy. For weeks, he had been chasing mere fragmentsa symbol, a trace of poison, missing caravans, hidden routes, whispers, and rumors. Pieces of a scattered puzzle. Now he finally had a name, and names could be investigated. The auction gradually dispersed, and the wealthy merchants returned to the main marketplace. Subterranean business resumed, wine flowed, and gold changed hands, yet Sawyer's attention remained elsewherefocused, sharp, and searching. He knew that organizations of this magnitude always kept records. Power required records, control required records, and somewhere inside this massive underground complex, those records existed.Wang immediately noticed the calculating look in Sawyer's eyes. "Oh no."Chi sighed. "I know that face."Sawyer glanced back at them. "What face?""The face that means w

  • Chapter 50 -The Auction

The deeper Sawyer explored the Midnight Market, the more dangerous the place became. Not because of the goods, and not because of the guards, but because of the people.Everywhere he looked, influential merchants moved through the underground hallsmen and women who controlled businesses, warehouses, caravans, and entire trade routes. These were people whose daily decisions affected thousands of livelihoods above ground. And all of them had gathered beneath a city that was supposedly dying. The contradiction deeply bothered him. The deeper he looked, the less this place resembled a mere illicit marketplace. It resembled something else entirely.A government. A hidden one.The answer arrived unexpectedly. While exploring one of the market's inner corridors, Sawyer noticed several wealthy merchants moving toward a guarded doorway. The entrance stood entirely apart from the main marketplace, boasting more guards, tighter security, and an unmistakable aura of secrecy. It was immediately su
