Chapter 1

The lab report sat in Jason Hart's lap like a grenade with the pin already pulled.

Three words at the bottom destroyed everything he ever believed about his life.

NOT BIOLOGICALLY RELATED.

The girl he tucked into bed every night for fifteen years, the girl who called him Daddy, the girl whose first steps he caught on a shaky phone video... she belonged to another man.

Something cold spread through his veins. Not sadness. Not yet. Right now it was just shock, the kind that makes the whole world go quiet like someone hit the mute button on reality.

Jason and his wife Lauren Chase got together when they were both twenty four. Back then she was just a pretty girl with big dreams and an empty bank account, trying to make it as an actress in a city that chewed up pretty girls and spit them out every single day. Nobody returned her calls. Nobody gave her a chance. She was eating cheap noodles for dinner and crying herself to sleep after every rejection.

And Jason was right there beside her through all of it.

He was nobody special. Just a doctor pulling long shifts at Eastport General, son of two fishermen who never made more than enough to keep food on the table. When his parents died five years back, he didn't inherit connections or money. He inherited a rusty boat and a stack of bills.

But his salary kept Lauren alive during those ten miserable years. He covered rent, groceries, car payments, everything. He held her on the couch at two in the morning when she sobbed about another failed audition and whispered that she was talented, that the world would see it eventually, that he would never stop believing in her.

Then eight years ago, one television role changed her entire life overnight. Suddenly Lauren Chase was everywhere. Billboards, talk shows, magazine covers. Thirty million followers who worshipped the ground she walked on. Endorsement deals worth more than Jason would earn in three lifetimes.

And somewhere in the middle of all that fame and money and glory, she had let another man into her body and passed off the result as Jason's daughter.

Sixteen years. His fingers curled around the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. Sixteen years I played the loyal husband while she turned me into the biggest fool in the country.

The worst part wasn't even the betrayal. It was the helplessness.

Lauren had an army of lawyers, publicists, and managers whose entire purpose was protecting her image. If he walked through the front door right now waving this paper in her face, she would have a legal team on the phone within five minutes. They would offer him money, make him sign something airtight, and bury the truth so deep nobody would ever find it.

And even if he found out who the real father was, what exactly could a regular hospital doctor do about it?

Jason didn't go home.

He pulled into the first bar he saw, dropped into a corner booth, and told the waitress to keep the whiskey coming.

Four glasses in, the edges of the room started getting soft. Six glasses in, the lights turned into fuzzy golden blobs. By glass number eight, he couldn't feel his lips anymore and the pain in his chest had dulled to a faraway throb.

Some old country song about lying and heartbreak started playing through the speakers, and Jason let out a laugh that sounded more like a wounded animal than anything human.

He raised his glass to nobody.

"Cheers to the world's stupidest husband."

He tipped it back, and everything after that turned into soup.

Time stopped making sense. Minutes or hours could have passed before he felt someone grab his arm and drag him out of the booth. A small body pressed against his side, struggling under his weight. Perfume hit his nose through the fog of alcohol, something soft and expensive that made his stomach flip.

A woman.

She was too small to hold him up properly. They zigzagged across the parking lot like two drunks in a three legged race, and somehow she managed to fold him into the passenger seat of a car.

The motion of driving rocked him like a baby, and he slipped under again.

When his eyes cracked open, neon signs were streaking past the windows in long colorful smears. He turned his heavy head toward the driver's seat and saw dark hair cascading over slim shoulders.

His poisoned brain connected the dots wrong instantly.

"Lauren." His voice sounded like someone had taken sandpaper to his throat.

The woman said nothing. Her hands stayed on the wheel.

"You think you can just pretend you don't hear me?" Jason's head lolled against the seat, his red, glassy eyes burning holes into her profile. "I found the test results. I know everything."

Silence filled the car like concrete.

"Fifteen years, Lauren." Something between a laugh and a sob tore out of him. "You watched me raise someone else's kid for fifteen years and you never said one word."

She still didn't speak. That quiet was worse than any lie she could have told. It made the fury inside him boil over until he couldn't hold it back anymore.

"Tell me who he is!" Jason slammed his fist against the dashboard and the woman's shoulders jumped. "Who's the guy you were sneaking off to every time I was working double shifts at the hospital? Huh?"

Nothing.

"I gave you everything." His voice cracked wide open, raw and savage. "When nobody in this whole city would look at you twice, I was the one paying your bills and telling you that you mattered. And you repaid me by opening your legs for some other man behind my back."

The car turned into an underground garage. The engine died. She came around to his door and pulled it open.

Jason spilled out of the seat and crashed into her. Her small frame buckled under his weight, but she wrapped her arm around his waist and somehow kept them both standing as they stumbled through the garage and into an elevator.

"So this is your little secret hideout." Jason's words melted together as she wrestled him through an apartment door he had never seen before. "How many of these you got? One for every man who's had a piece of you?"

She didn't respond. She was gasping from the effort of dragging him forward, her whole body trembling against his.

They made it halfway across the living room before her legs finally gave out.

She collapsed and he went down with her, both of them landing on thick carpet. Her hair fanned across his chest. Her breathing was fast and shallow against his collarbone, every exhale like a tiny flame licking his skin.

The ceiling spun above him in slow circles. His eyes wouldn't stay open anymore. His brain was shutting down piece by piece, the whiskey finally winning the war it had been fighting all night.

But even through the blackness swallowing him whole, he felt everything.

Her fingers found the top button of his shirt. She popped it open slowly, deliberately, like she had all the time in the world. Then the second. Then the third. Cool air kissed his bare chest, and then her warm palm replaced it, sliding down over his ribs with a pressure that sent electricity straight through his spine.

Her fingertips traced the line of muscle below his navel, featherlight, teasing, until they found his belt buckle. The metal clinked softly in the quiet apartment.

The leather slid free.

And then her body was on top of his, warm and deliberate, her weight settling over him in a way that erased every single thought left in his skull except the heat of her skin pressing against his own.
