Chapter 24

"Half?" Arthur asked. His voice was gentle, almost curious.

"Yes!" Eleanor sobbed dramatically, reaching a hand out toward him. "The law is the law, Arthur. Everything acquired during our marriage is community property. I forgive you for this public spectacle. Just come home to me."

The reporters went feral, their cameras recording every millisecond of the domestic drama. A billionaire divorce battle on live television was rating gold.

Arthur pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket. He calmly unfolded it and laid it flat on the wooden podium directly beneath the high-definition document camera.

The massive screen behind him instantly displayed the paper.

It was the severance check Julian had written. It was made out to Arthur Vance for one hundred thousand dollars. But written heavily across the back of the check, in thick black ink, was a legal addendum.

Accepted as full and absolute settlement of all marital assets, present and future. Signed, Eleanor Vance.

Eleanor’s fake tears vanished instantly. Her jaw dropped.

"You made a mistake, Eleanor," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a chilling, emotionless register. "You assumed I was stupid. When you handed me this check three days ago, I had my lawyers draft a digital addendum attached to the routing number. When your bank cleared the account closure this morning, you automatically agreed to the terms."

"That's illegal!" she shrieked, dropping the polite facade. Her face twisted into a mask of pure, ugly rage. "You tricked me! I never signed that physical paper!"

"Your digital signature is legally binding in the state of Valmont," Arthur replied smoothly. He picked up the piece of paper, folded it neatly, and placed it back in his pocket. "You sold your share of a trillion-dollar empire for a hundred grand. And then you spent it all on a dress that currently belongs to a bankrupt man."

The crowd erupted in mocking laughter. The ruthless efficiency of Arthur's trap was breathtaking.

Eleanor stood frozen, her face burning with unparalleled humiliation. The cameras were laughing at her. The world was laughing at her. She let out a guttural scream of frustration, turned on her heel, and sprinted out of the ballroom, shoving reporters out of her way.

Julian remained on the floor, staring blankly at the ceiling, his mind completely broken.

"Security," Arthur called out. "Remove the trash from my ballroom."

Vera emerged from the shadows. With effortless, terrifying strength, she grabbed Julian by the collar of his expensive suit and dragged him out the side doors like a sack of garbage.

Arthur leaned back into the microphone. "Vance Corp is officially open for business. No further questions."

He turned and walked off the stage, disappearing behind the velvet curtain. Serena was waiting for him, her eyes wide with absolute awe.

"That was... biblical," Serena breathed out.

"It was necessary," Arthur corrected, loosening his red tie. "The Capital City knows we can hit back now. They won't send proxies anymore."

Suddenly, the heavy steel doors at the back of the VIP staging area slammed open.

Nyx instantly slammed her laptop shut. Vera’s hand drifted to her blade. Arthur’s Aura of the Sovereign flared outward, an instinctive reaction to a sudden, overwhelming threat.

The air in the room grew instantly colder.

Walking through the doors was a woman. She didn't have armed guards. She didn't need them. She carried an aura of power that rivaled Arthur’s own.

She was devastatingly beautiful, with sharp, aristocratic features and cascading raven-black hair. She wore a tailored black trench coat draped over her shoulders like a cape, a pristine crimson dress underneath, and black stiletto heels that clicked ominously against the concrete floor.

Her eyes were the color of shattered ice.

Arthur’s Eye of Insight activated automatically.

[Target: Victoria Sterling]

[Status: The Queen of Diamonds. Head of the Capital Vanguard Council's Treasury.]

[Loyalty to Host: 0%]

[Danger Level: Apex.]

Arthur’s eyes narrowed. Sterling. She was Julian’s aunt. The true power behind the family name. The one who stayed in the Capital City and pulled the strings of governments.

Victoria stopped five feet away from Arthur. She didn't look angry. She looked deeply, profoundly amused.

"You completely destroyed my nephew," Victoria said. Her voice was like velvet wrapping a razor blade. "You bought my holding company in a matter of seconds. And you humiliated the Vanguard Council on live television."

Arthur didn't flinch. "I'm having a productive Tuesday. What do you want, Victoria?"

Victoria smiled. It was a terrifying, beautiful thing.

"I don't want a war, Arthur Vance," she purred, stepping into his personal space, bringing with her the scent of winter and expensive perfume. "I came here to offer you a ring."

The dying Harvester monolith crashed into the Mediterranean Sea ten miles offshore, sending a massive, three-hundred-foot tidal wave racing toward the island of San Marcos.Arthur didn't even look at the incoming tsunami. He tossed the fading, useless shaft of the Spear of Genesis aside. The magnetic casing dissolved into violet dust before it hit the marble balcony."Vera! Hyperion!" It was a six-foot-long javelin composed entirely of condensed, swirling anti-matter encased in a shifting magnetic field. The ship was constructed from self-repairing dark matter and propelled by a frictionless gravity drive. It descended through the pitch-black water at terrifying speeds.Ares stood like a monolith at the back of the bridge, his red optics cutting through the dim cabin lighting. Nemesis hovered near the navigation console, her shadow-wrapped form completely unbothered by the crushing depths outside the viewport. Vera stood directly beside Arthur, her hand resting on her combat blade out of pure habit."Depth: thirty-five thousand feet," the ship’s automated AI reported in a smooth, synthetic voic
