Chapter 5: A MEAN DISAPPOINTMENT

Kelvin couldn’t believe his ears, he hadn’t wanted to care about her but now he was forced to turn to her. He stared at her in disbelief, then asked again, “What did you say just now?!”

Diana, who was also infuriated, didn't back down.

“I said you need to apologise to Harry!”

Kelvin stared at her with his mouth open, he glared at her like he could pounce on her at any moment, his blood surged at her words and he couldn't understand how she could be so shameless.

“Is that what he wants? For me to apologise?” He asked coldly with his piercing eyes fixed on her.

“No! Don't bring Harry into this as he doesn't even know what is going on because he is ill right now.” She said, and without waiting for him to respond, she continued confidently.

“I know I'm in the wrong as I forgot Mia’s birthday, but it still doesn't warrant you to crash my party, and even destroy everything, and worse, you triggered Harry’s anxiety attack! He’s lying in the hospital right now and you think you shouldn't apologise?!” She questioned him confidently as if she were right.

Kelvin looked at Diana speechlessly for a while, then chuckled after he successfully calmed his rage, “I won't apologise to that trash! And you…” Kelvin paused, then looked her in the eye, and spat out coldly, "Shouldn't you be explaining your infidelity instead?”

“What?!” Diana exclaimed in shock.

She looked at her husband and her eyes turned red. “Me? Infidelity? Kelvin, I’ve never cheated on you so why accuse me of such?!” She questioned, her tone a bit high as she stared at him in disbelief.

“You have never?” Kelvin asked in surprise. He couldn't understand where Disna had gotten this blind confidence from.

“I saw him kiss you in front of a whole crowd, and you didn't reject him! I also watched him hold your waist but you never thought of pushing him away!”

Diana froze, she swallowed, “But—You don't need to make it look bad, okay? I wasn't able to react fast, besides, I was tipsy and he had only held me so I wouldn't fall. It's really not as you think. Can you stop calling it infidelity?” She asked, her voice now low.

Kelvin looked at her and suddenly shook his head as he realised she would keep defending herself. Since there was nothing much to say, then—

He suddenly paused as he heard the sound from the printer. He sighed in relief as it was just in time. He removed the papers from the printer then stretched it toward Diana who took it with curiosity.

“Sign it!” He ordered coldly.

Diana’s eyes widened in shock after reading it, “You want a divorce?!” She exclaimed but Kelvin didn't bother to listen as he pointed the pen at her.

“Just sign it. This is for the best.” He said calmly.

Diana looked at his face and realized the seriousness, she looked at the divorce contract in her hand and threw it on the table, “No! I won't! I don't want a divorce!” She cried out.

Kelvin didn't even look at her, he picked the document again, then stretched it towards her, “I don't need to listen to your opinion. Sign it!” He said resolutely.

“No!” Diana shook her head and didn't take the papers from him, “I haven't cheated so why should I agree to this? I said it was all a misunderstanding. So, why act this way?!” She asked with a clenched fist.

Kelvin suddenly felt tired, he really didn't want to listen to any of her nonsense anymore, but as he was about to say something, the door of their home opened which made both of them turn to the door immediately.

Mia staggered in while rubbing her eyes groggily, she stumbled in with her little legs and yawned, but when her eyes found her mum, her yawn paused halfway as she widened her eyes in surprise then ran toward Diana.

“Mama!”

Diana hugged her daughter tightly, she smiled gently and was about to say something when Mia’s foggy voice sounded.

“Mama, you don't want Mia anymore? Do you want to have another baby with that Harry?”

The smile on Diana froze and her face turned pale, then she heard her daughter sniff and continue.

“People at Mama’s company said Mama would marry Harry. Does that mean you won't want Papa and me anymore? Mama…don’t leave..” Mia pleaded tearfully.

Her words pierced through Diana’s heart like knives. Now she could understand why Kelvin had reacted that way, if she were in his position, she would do more than this.

Her body shook as she hugged her daughter tightly, “Mama isn't going anywhere, Mia will always be my baby!” She said but when she looked down, she realised Mia had fallen asleep. She heaved a sigh and threw a guilty glance at Kelvin who sat there coldly, then she walked to the bedroom and put Mia to sleep.

After some minutes or so, Diana came back after putting Mia to sleep. She stopped and gazed at Kelvin with a gentle gaze, and with nervous steps, she walked to him and sat down on the chair next to him.

Kelvin looked at her indifferently, and ignored the guilt on her face, he slid the papers towards her, “Since you are done, sign the divorce papers!”

Diana’s face turned pale white, her eyes turned red and her fingers pinched her dress, “I'm sorry, Kelvin. I really didn't mean to hurt you both. Don't let us divorce, okay? This really won't happen again.” She lowered her head in shame and apologised.

Kelvin felt drained. He really didn't want to listen to her anymore. She had done enough and listening to his daughter’s words again, he knew he wouldn't be able to take it any longer.

He looked at her calmly, “You don't need to say all this. This is for the best, so…Sign it!” He ordered impatiently.

Diana’s lips trembled as she looked at him in disbelief. He really had made up his mind?! But…

Diane’s eyes flashed with resolution, “What about Mia?! Do you think she would want her parents to get divorced? I understand that you are angry but don't make a decision you would later regret.” She explained, then continued immediately,

“Besides, I promise not to talk to Harry anymore, I’ll make sure I stop the closeness. Is that okay with you?” She asked, then bowed and with closed eyes, she whispered, “Think about Mia…”

CHAPTER 167— THE NAME ON THE DOORDiana had learned to recognize power by sound. It wasn’t something business school taught, nor a lesson inherited from her father’s endless monologues on leverage and strategy. This knowledge came from experience—from standing in rooms where she had to earn her place twice over. Power announced itself long before it spoke. It moved ahead of people like a current, bending the atmosphere to its will.It was in the sudden hush when she entered a room. The way heels faltered mid-step, conversations died halfway through a sentence, laughter retreated into tight smiles. It was in the recalibration—voices lowering, spines straightening, assistants moving faster as if time itself had accelerated. Phones silenced too quickly. Chairs pulled back too sharply. Respect disguised as efficiency. This morning, the boardroom at Verdict Crown sounded exactly right. The tension hummed, subtle but unmistakable, confirming her presence without ceremony. Diana crossed the

CHAPTER 166 — VERDICT CROWN INDUSTRIESThe garden did not rush him. That was what Kelvin liked most about it. Nothing here demanded immediate answers. The leaves did not curl if he hesitated. The soil did not harden out of impatience. Everything waited. Everything trusted time.Logan, however, did not.“You’re quiet,” Logan said.Kelvin crouched again, fingers brushing the base of a young plant. He loosened the soil gently, as if the roots might bruise under anything rougher. “I’m thinking.”Patrick shifted behind Logan, adjusting his stance so he wouldn’t cast a shadow too close. He knew better than to interrupt moments like this.“You think too much,” Logan replied. “That’s always been your problem.”Kelvin smiled faintly. “I learned that from you too.”Logan’s lips pressed together. He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he listened—to the breeze, to the distant hum of the estate waking, to the scrape of Kelvin’s movements in the dirt.“This company,” Logan continued, as if starti

Pale light crept through the curtains, thin and cautious, brushing the edges of the room without daring to intrude. He lay still for a moment, staring at the ceiling.Routine came first. Always.Kelvin rose quietly, feet touching the cold floor with practiced care. He moved through the room like someone who had learned long ago how to exist without disturbing the world around him. The mirror caught him briefly—tousled hair, sharp eyes dulled by sleep, a man who carried too much responsibility in his posture even when no one was watching. He didn’t linger. The hallway was dim as he walked toward the smaller bedroom at the end. He opened the door slowly, as if afraid sound itself might shatter something precious. His daughter slept cu

  • BAIT ON THE LINE

CHAPTER 164 – BAIT ON THE LINELila’s hands shook so badly that the pen scratched uneven lines across the yellow legal pad. The warehouse was quiet except for the scratch of graphite, the occasional creak of the metal chair when she shifted, and the low hum of the fluorescent bulb overhead. Gravelly and High-Voice had retreated to the shadows near the door, arms folded, watching her like hawks. Kelvin sat on the edge of the folding table, legs crossed, reading through the pages she’d already filled as she handed them over one by one.She wrote everything. Every text message she could remember. The exact date Harry slid the first envelope of cash across a diner table in the booth farthest from the window. The burner phone number he’d made her memorize. The script he’d emailed her—lines about how “that night meant something” and how she’d “always wondered if he felt it too.” She even wrote down the name of the shady lab tech Harry knew, the one who’d swapped the samples for two thousand

  • TRUTH IN THE DARK

CHAPTER 163 – TRUTH IN THE DARKThe van doors swung open with a metallic groan, and cold air rushed in, carrying the sharp scent of pine and damp earth. Rough hands grabbed Lila’s arms, hauling her out like a sack of grain. Her legs buckled the second her feet hit gravel—she hadn’t stood in what felt like forever—and she stumbled forward, knees scraping as someone shoved her upright.“Walk,” Gravelly barked, his grip bruising on her elbow. High-Voice took the other side, steering her blindly across uneven ground. Crunching leaves, a creak of hinges, then concrete under her sneakers. They were going inside somewhere—a building, isolated from the sounds of it. No traffic, no voices, just distant crickets and her own ragged breathing.Doors slammed behind her. Footsteps echoed in a large space—maybe a warehouse? The hood stayed on, darkness absolute. Her heart jackhammered so hard she felt it in her throat. This was it. They were going to kill her. • THE DEVIL ALL ALONG

CHAPTER 162– THE DEVIL ALL ALONGKelvin slammed the door of his beat-up Chevy behind him, the rusty hinges groaning like they were as fed up with life as he was. The neon sign of O’Malley’s Bar flickered above the entrance, casting a sickly red glow on the cracked sidewalk. It was one of those dive spots on the edge of town, the kind where the beer was cheap, the lighting dim, and nobody asked questions. Perfect for a guy like him, nursing a headache and a heartache that wouldn’t quit.He pushed through the heavy wooden door, the stale smell of spilled whiskey and cigarette smoke hitting him like a punch to the gut. The place was half-empty, a few regulars hunched over their drinks at the bar, murmuring low conversations that blended with the crackle of an old jukebox playing some forgotten country tune. Kelvin scanned the room out of habit—old instincts from his days on the force—before sliding onto a stool at the far end. The bartender, a grizzled guy named Lou with a tattoo of a fa
