Downstairs, the guild bustled with activity. Two soldiers, clad in royal armor, spoke with the receptionist. She caught Adam's eye and waved him over. Adam approached, curiosity growing. The receptionist had never spoken to him out of the goodness of her heart. So why exactly was she calling him. "Adam Hill," the receptionist said. "The King has sent for you." Adam's heart skipped a beat. He turned to one of the soldiers. "Have I committed an offense?" Adam asked. The soldier's expression remained neutral. "I don't know, sir," he replied. Adam weighed his options. But the King's summons couldn't be ignored. If things turned bad for him, he could always escape. "To think my infiltration plan ended before it even began." Adam thought to himself. "I'm ready," Adam said. The soldiers nodded. "Follow us," one of them said. Adam followed the soldiers out of the guild building. He could see the curious gaze that other adventurers cast on him. A royal carriage awaited, adorned with the Kingdom's crest which was the image of a red flying dragon. The soldiers opened the door. "Inside, please," one said. Adam stepped into the carriage. The soldiers followed, sitting opposite him. The carriage rolled into motion. Adam wondered what the King wanted. Was it a new mission? Or something more sinister? The carriage ride was silent. Adam's thoughts swirled. What lay ahead? The carriage ride dragged on, silence filling the air. Adam glanced at the soldiers, but they stared straight ahead. No one spoke. The castle's grandeur eventually broke the silence. Adam's gaze lifted to the towering spires. The carriage halted. A soldier opened the door. "Out, please," he said. Adam stepped onto the castle grounds. His heart almost jumped directly out of his mouth as he saw General Adolph strode past, he had a stern face. Adam could not understand why the General was here. Still, if bad came to worse, he could simply eliminate the King and the General, wouldn't that make things even easier for the denizens of the dark forest? "About time," he muttered. Adam watched him disappear into the mansion. The soldiers gestured. "Follow us." Adam trailed them through the castle's opulent halls. Portraits of past monarchs lined the walls. They stopped before large wooden doors. The soldiers pushed them open. "The throne room," one said. Adam entered. The room was filled with familiar faces. King Ryker sat on his throne. Princess Isabella stood beside him. Knight Commander Adara stood at attention. General Adolph paced near the window. Their eyes turned to Adam. "Ah, Adam Hill," King Ryker said. "Thank you for coming." Adam bowed. "As requested, Your Majesty." The King's expression turned serious. "We have a matter of great importance." Adam's curiosity grew. What did the King want? Adam scanned the room, sensing no hostility. His mind racing, he thought. "Have they discovered my secret? But.. if so, then why.." The fact that the faces in front of him showed admiration, not accusation made him rethink. "Perhaps I should just wait and see how this plays out." Adam muttered. King Ryker leaned forward, a warm smile spreading. "Adam Hill, Lord Harrington told me of your feat," "Defeating a pack of thunder wolves, alone and unaided." The King said in an excited manner while he slapped the armrest of his throne. "You drove them back to the Dark Forest, a testament to your valor." The King's eyes shone with genuine admiration. "By the gods, Adam, your bravery knows no bounds." The King said beaming. "You are a shining star in our kingdom's darkest hour. Your courage is the beacon that guides us through treacherous times." "Your name will echo through the ages, a hero's legend born." The King said with a reverential gaze. "You have proven yourself a true defender of our realm." Knight Commander Adara said and nodded, her eyes shining with pride. General Adolph's stern expression softened. "No adventurer is crazy enough to attempt way you did. Even I would find it difficult to fight against a pack of Thunder wolves." Princess Isabella's smile lit up the room. "Strong and handsome, if only you were royalty." Adam's cheeks flushed, overwhelmed by the praise. He could get the hint that the Princess was hitting on him. "Your Majesty," Adam began, "it was just a mission." King Ryker waved his hand. "Modesty becomes you, Adam, but we will not diminish your achievement." "We need heroes like you, now more than ever." The King's words hung in the air. What did he mean by "now more than ever"? Was something brewing in the kingdom? Adam became curious but he didn't dare ask. King Ryker's expression turned serious. "Adam, our kingdom faces a grave threat." "The Dark Forest grows stronger, its darkness spreading." "We must act, and act swiftly." "We're recruiting talented warriors and adventurers." "For the upcoming war against the Dark Forest." "Those who join will be rewarded handsomely." "Land, gold, and title, all will be bestowed upon our bravest fighters." The King's eyes locked onto Adam. "You, Adam Hill, have proven yourself exceptional." "Defeating a pack of thunder wolves alone – unthinkable!" "I personally invite you to join our army." "Your skills will be invaluable in the battles to come." Adam's eyes widened in shock. He never expected this. But as the King's words sank in, determination ignited within. Adam dropped to one knee. "Your Majesty," he said, voice filled with conviction. "I need no reward, no land or gold." "I swear to serve you, and this kingdom, to my last breath." "I'll fight with every ounce of strength I possess." "For the kingdom's safety, for its people, I'll give my all." The room fell silent. Knight Commander Adara's eyes shone with approval. General Adolph nodded, impressed. Princess Isabella smiled, her eyes sparkling. King Ryker's face lit up with a warm smile. "Rise, Adam Hill," he said. "Welcome to our kingdom's army." "You'll be one of our leaders, a champion of our people." Adam stood, his eyes held pride and conviction. But deep in his heart, he was laughing his heart out.
