A SHELTER IN THE STORM

Ward 005 was quiet, the soft beeping of the heart monitor filled the air, beeping continuously. Kane sat on a chair near Isadora's bed, watching her slumber on the bed, his right elbow pressed on his knee while his chin rested on his fist. Concern etched over his face.

Isadora's eyes twitched before it flickered open. Kane stood instantly, his face brightening with a sweet smile.

Isadora winced in pain, her eyes heavy and tired.

“Kane..” She called, her voice quieter and exhausted. “W—Where I'm I?" Her voice trembled slightly.

Kane gently sat on the bed edges and held her hand, his smile warm.

“That doesn't matter, Isadora. What matter is that you're safe now.” He said quietly, tightening her hand affectionately.

Isadora stared at him, the scene at the Warehouse, streaming into her mind. Tears slipped from the corner of her eye to her cheek.

Kane's smile faltered. He adjusted closer to her with worries and confusion mixing into a mask on his face.
