CHAPTER 59: A DISSAPOINTING CONCLUSION
To say Garle was shocked would be an understatement. The expression on the old Watcher’s face was a raw, devastating mix of grief, rage, terror, and sheer disbelief. His voice broke into a hollow whisper. “Son…”“I told you never to call me that again,” Argins replied. Unlike his father, Argins’ face held no conflict, only cold, unadulterated hatred.A few minutes earlier, Gayle had been stumbling backward down the dimly lit hallway, clutching his sliced throat as he choked on his own blood.Jirah had stalked toward him with a ravenous grin, three heavy blades hovering weightlessly around his shoulders. Having reduced the confident cadet to a broken mess, Jirah intended to take his time, savoring every second of the kill. He beckoned a floating blade to his palm.Gayle wanted to scream, to beg, to do anything, he was utterly helpless, completely at the killer's mercy. Clutching his neck with one hand, he stretched out the other to try to get Jirah to stop, he immediately felt a sharp
CHAPTER 58: THE WEIGHT OF SMOKE
Macy knew it was over the moment she struggled back to her feet. The relentless onslaught from her brother had ceased, but only for a fraction of a second. She knew Kyphah wanted her to suffer just a little longer, not out of hesitation to kill his own sister, but simply because it was who he was. Gritting her teeth, her legs trembling beneath her weight, she forced herself into a stance.A cruel grin spread across Kyphah’s face. They moved simultaneously, pulling at the atmosphere around them. It was a desperate tug-of-war for the air itself, but it was no contest. Try as she might, Macy felt the atmosphere ripping from her grasp. With a flick of his wrist, Kyphah unleashed a concussive blast of compressed air, blasting her backward into the wall. His footsteps echoed off the stone as he closed the distance. Barely conscious, Macy tried to crawl back, but she was already cornered. Looking up through tear-filled eyes, her voice cracked.“Please…” she begged.Kyphah’s smile widened. “G
CHAPTER 57: THE JACKAL'S FANGS
Gayle sent two more earthen blocks hurling towards Jirah but he sliced through them both with ease, lunging a blade towards Gayle. Gayle jerked back, the blade narrowly missing eye. There was barely any room in the walls he raised and he was under the impression that Jirah, limited to just two blades would be an easier opponent to defeat, but his physical strength was monstrous and his blades could practically cut through anything. With a simple hand movement, Gayle encased his hands with blocks of earth. He formed massive gauntlets out of them and charged towards Jirah. He blocked Jirah’s swings, countering with a punch to his sides but Jirah twisted his body, dodging the attack. He barely used the flats of his blades to block Gayle’s follow-up, the sheer force of the impact sending him sliding backwards until he hit the wall. Gayle launched the fingers of his gauntlet towards him, but he either dodged or sliced through them. Gayle didn't let up. He launched the stone fingers of hi
CHAPTER 56: NOT ACCORDING TO PLAN
Rashen propelled himself towards Haphron, feet extended to land a kick to his abdomen. Haphron didn’t move, he simply stood there waiting. Once again Rashen’s attack was useless as he simply kicked through Haphron, crashing into the wall. Before he could recover he launched himself into the air to avoid any attack Haphron would throw at him, it was to no avail as he felt smoke on his leg, dense black smoke extended from Haphron’s arm. He pulled Rashen down, slamming him hard on the ground.“It’s a shame we couldn’t have met in Nottenam, not that we were supposed to anyway, my associate, Jirah, he tends to take his time with his targets. The fool almost got himself captured, luckily I came in to save him.”Just then, Rashen remembered something he heard from Ngoko, ‘It quite literally got foggy’. “You- you were the one that attacked Raspin and Ngoko. You put them in the hospital.”“That wasn’t my intention at all.” He replied with genuine sincerity in his voice. “You see, my intent wa
CHAPTER 55: A GRAVE MISCALCULATION
Rashen felt paralyzed. The Chairman was dead, his body strapped to a chair in a dark room and he had no clue what to do, he felt completely helpless. He looked at the lifeless body, almost unable to process what he was seeing, four years of Imperial training hadn’t prepared him for this. He had failed to protect the Chairman. He began to hyper ventilate, panic setting in when suddenly, the open door slammed shut. The lights turned on revealing the figure that stood behind the door. A man in a long black cloak, his face was pale with grey eyes, ashy hair and a sinister smile.“You’re not the girl.” He said, his voice as cold as the Chairman’s body. “And judging from your looks you’re not the earth tamer either which means it must be my lucky day. I finally get to meet the “Hero of Grittshore.” Rashen’s breathing intensified as he rose his head to look at the man, Haphron was his name. From his looks alone Rashen knew he was with the Order of Jackals, he also knew he was the Chairman’s
CHAPTER 54: INFILTRATION
Three weeks passed since the cadets interrogated Chairman MacRossie. Presently, they folded their new combat suits into a bag, Rashen was still admiring his.“Can’t thank you enough for the new suits Garle.” He said to Garle who sat at the dining room with them.“Oh think nothing of it cadet, think of it as a token of our appreciation for all you do.” Garle replied heartily. “It’s similar to your panafin suits but denser especially around the chest. What you have in your hand is the original uniform design for the Watch, but we figured that an all-black suit wouldn’t be very inviting, we don’t know if it’ll be enough though, it doesn’t offer as much protection as your normal armor.”“Nonsense Garle! It’s perfect for an infiltration mission.” Rashen said as he took one last look at the suit before folding it inside the bag. He joined the rest at the table, taking a seat next to Gayle. He started.“We’ll be heading over to the dock by sundown, according to Chairman MacRossie he’ll be me
