“Isabella, sign the papers already. Everyone’s waiting.”
Her mother’s voice sliced through the room, making the murmurs of gathered relatives die down. Isabella kept her gaze fixed on the documents spread across the polished table, her fingers curled into her lap. “I… I need a moment,” she whispered. “A moment? Haven’t you wasted enough years on him?” one of her uncles scoffed. “This boy has given you nothing but embarrassment. Do what’s right for yourself. Come on!" Cayden stepped forward from the corner, his throat is tight. “Isabella, please. Listen to me, not them. I know I’ve failed in many ways, but I’ve never stopped loving you. Just give me a chance to make things right." A cousin chuckled. “Chance? You’ve had years, and all you’ve shown is that you’re fit to carry groceries and wash dishes. That’s not a husband, that’s a servant.” “I don’t care what you think,” Cayden shot back, his eyes never leaving Isabella. “This is between me and my wife. Isabella, look at me. Do you really want to throw away everything we’ve been through because of their voices?” Her lips parted, but no words came. “Don’t let his begging confuse you,” her father interrupted firmly. “We’ve all decided. Today, it ends. You deserve someone who can give you the life you should have had long ago. Something that this trash can't give you." Cayden clenched his fists. “With respect, sir, it’s not your decision. It’s hers," he firmly said, not taking his sight away from her. “Don’t you raise your voice in this house,” Mrs. Mortaine snapped. “You’ve lived under our roof, eaten our food, relied on our support, and now you dare argue? You have no place here anymore.” “I stayed because of her,” Cayden answered, his voice breaking, now, he can't really hold all his emotions. “Not because of you. Everything I endured, I endured for Isabella.” The relatives exchanged mocking glances, some laughing openly. “What romance,” one aunt sneered. “If you really loved her, why are you still poor? Love doesn’t feed families or pay bills.” Before Cayden could answer, the heavy front door creaked open. Antonio strode in, dressed in a crisp suit, carrying a bouquet of fresh roses. The sight made the crowd stir with excitement. “Perfect timing,” an aunt exclaimed. “Now here’s the man who truly suits Isabella.” Antonio smirked, placing the flowers on the table directly in front of Isabella. “I couldn’t miss this occasion. Today marks Isabella’s freedom. Freedom from humiliation, from wasted years, from him.” He gestured toward Cayden like dismissing a stray dog. Cayden’s jaw tightened. “Antonio, leave. This isn’t your place.” “Oh, but it is,” Antonio replied smoothly. “Because when she signs those papers, she’ll finally be free to choose better. And I’ll be right here, waiting.” Gasps and whispers filled the room. Several relatives clapped, some nodding approvingly. “See, Isabella?” her cousin said eagerly. “You have someone ready to take care of you. Don’t look back. Just sign.” Cayden moved closer, desperation flickering in his eyes. “Isabella, listen to your heart, not their noise. I know I’m not perfect, but everything I’ve done has been for you. Don’t let him replace me like I’m nothing.” Antonio laughed. “Replace? You were never worthy to begin with. She deserves a man who can give her more than just promises. What have you ever given her except shame?” “That’s enough!” Cayden snapped. His voice echoed through the room, but instead of silencing the room, it provoked louder jeers, and irritations. “Don’t raise your tone here!” someone shouted. “Sign it, Isabella!” another chimed. The crowd began chanting in unison, their voices pounding against the walls. “Sign it! Sign it! Sign it!” Isabella squeezed her eyes shut, her hands trembling. “Please,” Cayden begged, his voice raw. “Just tell me. Do you still love me? If there’s even a part of you that does, don’t sign.” The chanting grew louder. Antonio leaned down, his lips close to her ear. “End it now, Isabella. Don’t drag this out. Sign, and step into the life you deserve.” Tears welled in her eyes as she stared at the pen lying beside the papers. For a moment, the room blurred, voices crashing into her ears. She glanced at Cayden, his face pale, and his eyes pleading, while both of his shoulders trembling with restrained hope. Her chest rose and fell quickly. Then, slowly, her hand reached for the pen. “No…” Cayden whispered, his knees weakening while watching her every move. “Don’t…” The relatives fell silent, anticipation started to make the moment more tense. Every eye was locked on her as she pressed the pen to the paper. Her signature flowed across the line, ink sealing the finality of the moment. Cheers erupted instantly. Some clapped, others laughed, their voices obviously sound's like a cruel triumph. “Finally!” someone shouted. “It’s done!” Cayden stood frozen. The sound of their celebration heard hollowly in his ears. All he could see was her name scrawled in black, binding the end of everything he had fought for. The papers were shoved toward him. “Take them,” Don Ricardo said coldly. Cayden reached out, his hands trembling violently. His fingers brushed the edge of the documents before gripping them tightly. The weight of the papers felt heavier than stone, heavier than the world. He looked at Isabella one last time. She wouldn’t meet his eyes. Her shoulders were stiff, and her lips were on a thin line as if holding back words she dared not speak. His throat closed. No words could escape. The relatives’ laughter filled the room again, their voices circling him like vultures around carrion. Antonio stood proudly at Isabella’s side, smirking with victory, his hand brushing lightly against her arm. Cayden lowered his gaze to the papers, his vision turned blurry. His heart pounded, he felt both betrayal and loss. The signature glared up at him, sealing his humiliation. And still, he couldn’t let go, not now...

“Diego.” “You finally picked up.” Diego’s voice came warm through the line. “Where are you calling from? It sounds like the city is awake behind you.” “In the office. Late,” Cayden answered. “I just finished a meeting. I needed to hear a voice I trust.” “You know I am always here.” Diego’s tone went soft for a second. “Tell me straight. How are you, really?” “I am fine,” Cayden said. “Busy. Focused.” “Fine doesn’t mean nothing is wrong,” Diego pushed. “You and I spent years abroad. We worked on the pieces of your life. We built this. You can tell me if there is one corner you still avoid.” There was a pause. Cayden breathed out. “Isabella came to the forum today,” he said finally. “She defended me.” “I saw the footage,” Diego said. “I saw her defend you in front of everyone. Your ex in-laws must have hated that.” “They did,” Cayden said. “They called me other names. They tried to humiliate me again last week.” “Then why are you telling me this now?” Diego asked. “Do you still
Chapter 28: The Unexpected Defense
“Cayden, how exactly did you acquire such control in just a few years?” Zhao asked, voice dripping with disbelief. “It seems… convenient, don’t you think?” A few other executives snickered, glancing toward the audience to see who might support their insinuation. All eyes subtly shifted to Isabella, seated among her family’s associates. “She’s going to side with them,” one murmured under their breath. “She always did.” Cayden’s jaw tightened, but he maintained a calm exterior, folding his hands over the podium. “I built my path through hard work, calculated decisions, and strategic partnerships,” he said evenly, holding the attention of the room. Victor smirked, leaning forward. “Hard work? Or luck? Or perhaps… someone’s family backing you?” Cayden smirked, Mortaine's mistakes from the past seem repeating now. Whispers rippled through the forum. Every eye in the room seemed to glance at Isabella. A few executives nudged her, encouraging her to speak up, expecting her to public
Chapter 27: The Secret Alliance
“Enough of that begging,” Don Ricardo said, voice hard in the dim study. “I will not crawl to that arrogant Cayden again. Not after what he did to us.” “We had no choice,” his wife murmured, eyes rimmed red. “Cayden humiliated us. He humiliated our name. But, we needed him. We had to kneel.” “Kneel?” Marco spat, leaning forward. “We’re Mortaine! We don’t kneel. We retaliate. We break him.” “You tried,” Don Ricardo snapped. “You failed. You got nothing but public shame for your trouble.” “Because I acted alone,” Marco replied, jaw tight. “If I had true backing, if I had someone with the power to move pieces quietly, it would be different.” A new voice, smooth and low, made them all look up. “Power can be bought. Loyalties can be shifted. Men like Cayden rely on images. Image is fragile.” They turned. Mr. Zhao stood in the doorway, hands folded, a calm smile on his face. He carried no papers, but confidence only, despite the fact that Cayden also humiliated him before. “Who invi
Chapter 26: The Ex-Wife’s Plea
“Cayden… please, can we talk?” The voice trembled. It's soft yet urgent, cutting through the quiet of the office. Cayden didn’t look up. His pen moved across the papers with steady precision. “I’m busy.” “Busy?” Isabella's voice cracked. “You always find time for everything else… but not for me?” “I said I’m busy,” Cayden repeated, his tone is flat, leaving no room for argument. Isabella took a step closer, her hands clasped tightly. “I… I need to explain. I made mistakes. I—” “You need to explain? Again?” Cayden’s voice was sharper now, and he finally lifted his gaze. “You made your choice. You abandoned me. What is there left to explain?” “I…” Her throat tightened. “I didn’t know… I thought—” “Thought what?” Cayden asked coldly. “That I would wait forever? That I would beg and never move on?” “I never meant to hurt you!” Isabella’s hands shook, tears slipping down her cheeks. “I… I loved you. I thought I was doing the right thing, following my family…” She's feeling ho
Chapter 25: You've Already Lost
“Cayden!” His voice was loud in the lobby, making people turn to look. Cayden lifted his gaze from the folder in his hand, it doesn't even make him flinched a bit, as Mr. Villarreal stormed forward. His suit looked neat under the lights, and his shoes made a steady sound as he walked. There was something in the way he moved that felt full of pride. “You’re really here,” Villarreal sneered, sounding harsh and mocking. “I almost didn’t recognize you without your cheap rags. But then again, some things never change. A beggar will always be a beggar.” The words came out sharp, his smirk making them sting even more. A few people nearby glanced over, sensing the upcoming tension between them. “Mr. Villarreal.” Cayden didn’t flinch at all, standing firm as if the insult hadn’t touched him. His face stayed calm, almost too calm. Villarreal barked a laugh, making sure the gathering businessmen and socialites nearby could hear. “Don’t ‘Mr.’ me as if we’re equals. You? You’re the man who u
Chapter 24: I Bury Them
“Mr. X, your… your ex-father-in-law is here.” “My what?” Cayde’s pen froze mid-signature. His sharp tone made the secretary’s shoulders lock. “He… he insisted, sir. He said he’s your father-in-law.” Cayden leaned back in his chair, he gave a crooked, mocking smirk “Father-in-law? That old man. I didn’t know corpses could walk through my doors.” The secretary opened her mouth to respond, but the door banged open. Ricardo Mortaine marched in with forced bravado, his once-polished shoes scuffed, and his suit trying too hard to look respectable. “Cayden, my son-in-law!” Ricardo boomed, stretching his arms wide, and when he heard his voice and saw his bright face, he really thought that Mortaine's really getting crazy because of what's happening to them. Cayden’s face hardened. “You’ve got some nerve. I told you clearly that any of your family must not show their face to me unless I told you so." “Son-in-law, I came to talk,” Ricardo insisted quickly, his voice slick with urgency.
