“Get out of here, Cayden. You have no place in this family anymore!" It's too direct, like he didn't do anything good for them.
“I said leave! Don’t drag this out any longer.” “I…” Cayden’s voice was faint, almost lost under the harshness of their words. His eyes moved toward Isabella, searching for a sign. He's hoping that she might run onto him, but it didn't happen. “Isabella, can you at least look at me once?” She kept her head lowered. She did not speak nor look at him. Cayden’s hands tightened around the divorce papers. “So it’s true. This is the end.” “Stop talking and go.” Her father’s tone was final. Cayden’s lips trembled, but he gave no answer. He turned, opened the door, and stepped outside. The villa door shut behind him with a dull sound, leaving him alone under the pouring rain. “Why does it have to be like this…” he muttered, his words blending with the storm. He's blaming himself for being useless, for being poor. The water fell hard on his hair, jacket, and the papers he carried close to his chest. He walked slowly along the stone path, as his shoes splashing in puddles. Each step felt heavy, he can't just endure the rejection he had just faced, especially from the woman he thought loved him as well. At the gate, his knees buckled. He sank onto the wet curb, his back hunched forward, he hugged the paper tightly, like it can absorb all the pain he's feeling, as his breaths came unsteady. “Was I really that useless?” His voice cracked as he spoke to the empty night. “Was I nothing but a burden to them? To her?” No answer came. Only the sound of the downpour filled his side. His hands shook, his grip on the documents tightening as though they might slip away. “I gave her everything I could,” he whispered. “I stayed, even when they called me worthless. I endured all of it because I loved her. But in the end… it still wasn’t enough.” The rain soaked through the thin paper, blurring the ink. His vision blurred too, and stinging. His heart felt hollow on that moment , the finality of her signature is just a proof that she really doesn't love him. He bowed his head lower, whispering again, “I was never good enough, was I?” His body trembled with exhaustion. His breaths were shallow. Then, through the storm, a sudden vibration jolted him. Ring. Ring. The sound came from his pocket. His phone glowed against the dark, the screen showing an unknown number. He stared at it for a moment, uncertain if he had the strength to answer. But the ringing continued. Slowly, he pulled it out, pressed the screen, and lifted it to his ear. “Hello,” he said quietly, his voice weak. “Am I speaking to Mr. Cayden Ramirez?” “Yes… this is Cayden.” “This is Attorney Lopez,” the voice continued. “I am calling on behalf of the Ramirez family estate. It is about your grandfather, Mr. Zayn Ramirez.” Cayden sat up slightly, water dripping from his hair. “My grandfather?” “I am sorry to inform you that he passed away early this morning.” Cayden’s throat tightened. His eyes shut as the words sank in. “So… he’s gone.” “I understand this is painful news,” the lawyer said steadily, “but there is something important I must explain. Your grandfather left behind a final will. In it, you are named as his heir.” Cayden blinked, struggling to process. “His… heir?” “Yes,” Attorney Lopez confirmed. “You have been appointed as the sole successor to his estate. This includes his companies, investments, and all personal assets. The scale of the inheritance is significant. You are now the legal heir to everything he left behind.” Cayden froze, raindrops rolling down his pale face. Cayden's lips parted, but his voice was faint. “W-Why me?” “Your grandfather’s instructions were clear,” the lawyer replied. “He believed in you, Mr. Ramirez. He entrusted everything to your name. We need you to come to our office tomorrow morning for the reading of the will. The process will begin immediately after.” “I… I don’t understand,” Cayden whispered. His free hand trembled, still clutching the crumpled divorce papers. “There will be time to explain,” the lawyer said. “For now, I only ask that you prepare yourself. Again, my condolences. I will see you tomorrow morning.” The call ended with a soft click, leaving only the storm around him. Cayden slowly lowered the phone, staring blankly at the soaked ground. His heart pounded unevenly, torn between grief and disbelief. His grandfather, the only person who had ever treated him with kindness, was gone. Yet that same man had left him everything. His hand loosened. The papers slipped from his grasp. The bundle hit the ground with a dull sound. Rain spread across the sheets. Isabella’s name blurred, her signature dissolving on the paper. Cayden stared at them, motionless. His breaths quickened. He leaned forward. “Why me, Grandfather?” His whisper was lost in the rain. The water kept falling, erasing the lines and shapes on the documents until they were nothing more than streaks of ink on soaked paper. His hands shook as he pressed them against his knees. His mind spun with fragments of memory, his grandfather’s stern voice, the rare but firm pats on his shoulder, the words that once told him to endure even when the world mocked him. Now those words returned, colliding with the cruel voices of his in-laws, the heartless Isabella, and the lawyer’s declaration that he was heir to a fortune. He bowed his head, his body is trembling. The divorce papers lay ruined at his feet. The future his in-laws had forced upon him was already washed away. Yet another path, unexpected, had just opened before him. Cayden could only sit there, frozen. His grandfather was gone. His marriage was gone. And now, everything was about to change...

“Diego.” “You finally picked up.” Diego’s voice came warm through the line. “Where are you calling from? It sounds like the city is awake behind you.” “In the office. Late,” Cayden answered. “I just finished a meeting. I needed to hear a voice I trust.” “You know I am always here.” Diego’s tone went soft for a second. “Tell me straight. How are you, really?” “I am fine,” Cayden said. “Busy. Focused.” “Fine doesn’t mean nothing is wrong,” Diego pushed. “You and I spent years abroad. We worked on the pieces of your life. We built this. You can tell me if there is one corner you still avoid.” There was a pause. Cayden breathed out. “Isabella came to the forum today,” he said finally. “She defended me.” “I saw the footage,” Diego said. “I saw her defend you in front of everyone. Your ex in-laws must have hated that.” “They did,” Cayden said. “They called me other names. They tried to humiliate me again last week.” “Then why are you telling me this now?” Diego asked. “Do you still
Chapter 28: The Unexpected Defense
“Cayden, how exactly did you acquire such control in just a few years?” Zhao asked, voice dripping with disbelief. “It seems… convenient, don’t you think?” A few other executives snickered, glancing toward the audience to see who might support their insinuation. All eyes subtly shifted to Isabella, seated among her family’s associates. “She’s going to side with them,” one murmured under their breath. “She always did.” Cayden’s jaw tightened, but he maintained a calm exterior, folding his hands over the podium. “I built my path through hard work, calculated decisions, and strategic partnerships,” he said evenly, holding the attention of the room. Victor smirked, leaning forward. “Hard work? Or luck? Or perhaps… someone’s family backing you?” Cayden smirked, Mortaine's mistakes from the past seem repeating now. Whispers rippled through the forum. Every eye in the room seemed to glance at Isabella. A few executives nudged her, encouraging her to speak up, expecting her to public
Chapter 27: The Secret Alliance
“Enough of that begging,” Don Ricardo said, voice hard in the dim study. “I will not crawl to that arrogant Cayden again. Not after what he did to us.” “We had no choice,” his wife murmured, eyes rimmed red. “Cayden humiliated us. He humiliated our name. But, we needed him. We had to kneel.” “Kneel?” Marco spat, leaning forward. “We’re Mortaine! We don’t kneel. We retaliate. We break him.” “You tried,” Don Ricardo snapped. “You failed. You got nothing but public shame for your trouble.” “Because I acted alone,” Marco replied, jaw tight. “If I had true backing, if I had someone with the power to move pieces quietly, it would be different.” A new voice, smooth and low, made them all look up. “Power can be bought. Loyalties can be shifted. Men like Cayden rely on images. Image is fragile.” They turned. Mr. Zhao stood in the doorway, hands folded, a calm smile on his face. He carried no papers, but confidence only, despite the fact that Cayden also humiliated him before. “Who invi
Chapter 26: The Ex-Wife’s Plea
“Cayden… please, can we talk?” The voice trembled. It's soft yet urgent, cutting through the quiet of the office. Cayden didn’t look up. His pen moved across the papers with steady precision. “I’m busy.” “Busy?” Isabella's voice cracked. “You always find time for everything else… but not for me?” “I said I’m busy,” Cayden repeated, his tone is flat, leaving no room for argument. Isabella took a step closer, her hands clasped tightly. “I… I need to explain. I made mistakes. I—” “You need to explain? Again?” Cayden’s voice was sharper now, and he finally lifted his gaze. “You made your choice. You abandoned me. What is there left to explain?” “I…” Her throat tightened. “I didn’t know… I thought—” “Thought what?” Cayden asked coldly. “That I would wait forever? That I would beg and never move on?” “I never meant to hurt you!” Isabella’s hands shook, tears slipping down her cheeks. “I… I loved you. I thought I was doing the right thing, following my family…” She's feeling ho
Chapter 25: You've Already Lost
“Cayden!” His voice was loud in the lobby, making people turn to look. Cayden lifted his gaze from the folder in his hand, it doesn't even make him flinched a bit, as Mr. Villarreal stormed forward. His suit looked neat under the lights, and his shoes made a steady sound as he walked. There was something in the way he moved that felt full of pride. “You’re really here,” Villarreal sneered, sounding harsh and mocking. “I almost didn’t recognize you without your cheap rags. But then again, some things never change. A beggar will always be a beggar.” The words came out sharp, his smirk making them sting even more. A few people nearby glanced over, sensing the upcoming tension between them. “Mr. Villarreal.” Cayden didn’t flinch at all, standing firm as if the insult hadn’t touched him. His face stayed calm, almost too calm. Villarreal barked a laugh, making sure the gathering businessmen and socialites nearby could hear. “Don’t ‘Mr.’ me as if we’re equals. You? You’re the man who u
Chapter 24: I Bury Them
“Mr. X, your… your ex-father-in-law is here.” “My what?” Cayde’s pen froze mid-signature. His sharp tone made the secretary’s shoulders lock. “He… he insisted, sir. He said he’s your father-in-law.” Cayden leaned back in his chair, he gave a crooked, mocking smirk “Father-in-law? That old man. I didn’t know corpses could walk through my doors.” The secretary opened her mouth to respond, but the door banged open. Ricardo Mortaine marched in with forced bravado, his once-polished shoes scuffed, and his suit trying too hard to look respectable. “Cayden, my son-in-law!” Ricardo boomed, stretching his arms wide, and when he heard his voice and saw his bright face, he really thought that Mortaine's really getting crazy because of what's happening to them. Cayden’s face hardened. “You’ve got some nerve. I told you clearly that any of your family must not show their face to me unless I told you so." “Son-in-law, I came to talk,” Ricardo insisted quickly, his voice slick with urgency.
