6. Ridiculed at the party

Several weeks later, Alexander and his wife were invited to a party. His In-laws got the invite because his father-in-law was amongst the circle of business men. He works as his boss's secretary.

Choosing not to ride with him, Angelica dolled up and left earlier. She wouldn't want to be associated with him at the party.

When he reached the venue in his old rusty car, he was almost dismissed from the premises were it not for the invitation card in his hand.

He finally got in through the gate and was marveled at the gigantic building that was being used for the party. The whole place screamed wealth.

As soon as he entered the hall built downstairs for these parties, he froze to a spot. He was putting on the only good piece of clothing he had. The one his friend Wyatt had bought him on his wedding. At that time they still had eachother's contact.

Looking at how wealthy and classy everyone was dressed, he regretted agreeing to come. He would have just stayed home but his father-in-law wanted him there. Why? It's not as if he was going to do anything useful here except...

He saw the smug look on his in-laws' faces. They invited him to have him ridiculed.

"Who let a beggar in here?" He heard a woman sneer to her friends.

He ignored it and advanced towards the table his wife sat with her family. But immediately he approached, Carter went blocking him.

"Don't sit with us" he told him blatantly

"Why? My wife's there. I want to go to her" he protested

"Looking like that? No way you're joining our table. Your mere presence has tainted the whole place" Carter smirked

"Then why was I pressured to come in the first place?"

Carter chuckled "Don't you get it? Dad has found you one job to make some money. You see those dishes everyone's using today at the party? You'll wash them and earn cool cash. Don't worry dad will introduce you to his boss who has made this party possible"

"I'll not have you and your family insult me like this. I'm taking Angelica home with me" he frowned, about advancing towards his wife but Carter pulled him back.

"If you go there my friend, I'm certain they'll have the security throw you out in an instant. So, why not calm down and do the job you are here for. Give your wife a breathing space away from your stench of poverty even if it's just for one day"

Alexander stood there watching him leave to join the family once again. He felt disrespected and hurt by all of these. His wife only looked at him once and it was in disappointment probably from his dressing.

Suddenly, someone bumped into him, red liquid spilling. He looked and saw a young man around his age or so staring at him furiously.

The young man had bumped into him, his glass of red wine spilling on himself and on Alexander's.

"You fool!" He furiously slapped Alexander on the cheek, irritated by him

"What was that for? You are the one at fault here" Alexander huffed at him.

As if there was something funny, the young man chuckled "My fault?"

"Yes, your fault and I don't appreciate getting slapped in the face just because you can't own up to your faults" Alexander raised his chin, defending himself

At this point unknown to Alexander, the center of attention was now on them.

"Who let a beggar like him in here in the first place?" The young man asked, looking around.

Alexander looked and saw that the people's attention was now on him. He mistakenly looked towards his wife's direction and then his insides churned. The look in her eyes...

"I'm just leaving" he resigned, trying to leave the party but this young man wasn't done.

"Not so soon, beggar. You'll pay for this shirt of mine you've ruined. Unfortunately, it's one in a million" the young man smirked, satisfied with his shocked reaction.

Alexander was shocked because this might end up taking money from his pocket. He knows these people here would most definitely sell him or something and his wife might just sit there feeling embarrassed and trying to act like she doesn't know him.

He took it as his fault. He keeps causing her disgrace. He doesn't seem to see that she's tired of him. All he cares about was the love. He still believes she's his light and that she'll be back to him fully again to lighten up his world once again.

"You bumped yourself into me. I'm not at fault here and I'm certainly not paying for your mistakes"

"Then, do you want to explain to the security how you got in here cos I'm well aware I didn't issue an invitation card to someone like you"

The young man went on tearing him down in front of everyone.

It was so heart aching that he was part of the ones hosting the party.

"I invited him" his father-in-law spoke up.

His heartbeat began racing. This man wouldn't defend him. This was just the calm before the storm. What was he up to?

"Mr Rockefeller, you are saying you used the other invite on this filth. You should..."

Mr Rockefeller seeing the people wondering why he did that decided to explain his motive, "He's the young man who's going to join the helps in cleaning this whole place. He needs help with money"

He got punched in the gut. They've done it again and he has fallen into the trap. There are times he would try to go against his father-in-law but it was hard knowing he has connections and can pull him down or destroy him completely.

"Well then, since he can't afford to get me another shirt" the young man grinned then looked intently at Alexander "He'll have to do the cleaning all by himself and he wouldn't be paid"

"That's ridiculous! This is a planned work to ridicule me. I'm not doing anything as such" The worst of it all was that the whole people in the building were just the same as the young man.

"Either this or you'll go to jail"
