Every gaze landed on Diane, most of them filled with smug amusement. No one in the room could seriously believe that Leon, the infamous live-in son-in-law of the Hartwells, had the power or status to orchestrate something so grand.

It was laughable.

Diane scoffed quietly, knowing full well Brianna had made the comment just to humiliate her. Still, a trace of doubt crossed her mind. Leon had told everyone in the room there’d be a birthday celebration for her. And he hadn’t struck her as the kind of man who lied, at least, not for something like this.

But this? This was too much.

They barely even knew each other. She couldn’t even begin to tell what they were anymore—were they friends? Was he only sticking around because she begged for protection? The lines were too blurry.

The idea that this entire event so extravagant it drew the city’s elite could be for her? It felt ridiculous, and believing it would only make her feel naive and blindly stupid. He couldn’t have gone this fa

Knock. Knock. Knock!!Ethan Lancaster’s fists slammed against Brianna’s bedroom door, the sound sharp enough to echo down the hallway.“Brianna! Open this damn door! Where the hell are you?! How drunk did you get last night?! You’ve been in there all day. Come out, now!”He waited, ears straining for a response, but got none.Frustrated, he stormed down the stairs.“Dad! Mom! Brianna isn’t coming out of her room!”“What now?” David said, adjusting his jacket. “I don’t have time for this, I’m heading to work.”“But David,” Margaret Lancaster whined, then glanced at Ethan. “Are you sure your sister even came home last night? Are you sure she’s in her room?”Ethan froze. Now that she mentioned it… he hadn’t seen Brianna come in.David let out a long sigh, brushing them off. “You’re probably worrying over nothing. Whether she’s home or not, that girl can take care of herself. I have a meeting today that might finally put me in the same room as Azrael. I don’t have time to worry about this

  • 149: Testimony

At the Divine Order Temple, it was another day of devotion, incense burning low, bells chiming only once every hour, a reminder of time passing. As the final prayers ended, and the congregation began to rise up, a woman lifted her hands, commanding attention with a sudden, deliberate motion. All eyes turned toward her, brows knitting in curiosity. It was Mrs. Carter.“I have a testimony to share!” she called out, her voice strong. At the back of the hall, Iria’s eyes widened. She scanned Mrs. Carter and froze when she saw her daughter, Lori, standing beside her. A warm smile spread across her face, and she made her way quickly toward them. “A testimony?” she murmured, excitement threading her words. “Go ahead, Mrs. Carter. Tell us everything Mr. Azrael has done for you.”Seraphina, who had already begun gathering her things, stopped in place, a frown of confusion creasing her brow as Mrs. Carter moved toward the altar, her children following closely behind. There was a big happy smi

“I told you to keep your eyes on Zane Jones,” Jarvis said with a measured tone edged with intensity. “I’m extremely curious about that town. There’s something about it that doesn’t sit right with me.”Kane nodded in agreement. “You’re not wrong, Mr. Grave. Scorchfield is… unsettling. My men said it’s hard to stay there for long. The atmosphere alone feels wrong. As for Zane…” he paused briefly, then continued, “he’s dead.”Jarvis froze. “Dead?”“Yes,” Kane confirmed. “Unfortunately, we don’t know how it happened. All we could uncover is that he was hiding from someone… or something.”Jarvis leaned back into his chair, his brows knitting together as his thoughts spiraled. “Scorchfield,” he murmured. “A lawless town beyond order. I can’t even begin to imagine the kind of secrets buried in a place like that.” He straightened slightly and looked at Kane. “Proceed carefully. Be subtle. I have a feeling whatever is hidden there is dangerous… something beyond ordinary human understanding.”

The next day, Alanah left Leon’s home without informing him. When Leon eventually noticed her absence, he immediately instructed someone to make sure she arrived safely on her journey back home. After that, he prepared himself and headed straight to Diane’s residence. When he arrived, he knocked softly on the door.Inside, Diane was already fully dressed and ready to leave for her plans with Sophia, plans she needed to carry out quickly since time was not on her side.“Didn’t you hear a car pull up?” Donald Lancaster asked as he walked over to the window. A moment later, he frowned slightly. “That’s a black Rolls Royce… Diane?”Another knock sounded, drawing everyone’s attention back to the door.“It looks like you have a visitor, Diane,” Abigail said excitedly. “I bet it’s Leon.”Diane blinked, her mind flashing back to her last meeting with Leon, him offering her the keys to a new house, and her turning him down. She hadn’t told her parents a single word about that encounter. She si

“I do love you, Isabella,” he murmured to himself, eyes fixed on her as she stood waiting for her driver, completely unaware that she was being watched. “But not enough. You were never more than a prize to be taken… and I don’t lose what I’ve claimed so easily.”A bitter chuckle slipped from his lips. “Isabella, Isabella… you’re lucky you’re not the one I’m checking off my list tonight.”Moments later, her driver arrived. She stepped into the car, the door closed, and the vehicle pulled away, disappearing down the street.Victor let out a slow breath and turned his gaze elsewhere, remaining where he was.Less than thirty minutes passed before the person he had been waiting for finally appeared. A low chuckle escaped him as he stepped out from the corner where he had kept himself hidden.“Hey, Julian.”Julian rolled his eyes at the sound of the familiar voice and turned toward him. “You’re still here,” he said flatly, irritation clear in his tone.Victor walked closer, nodding once. “Y

“Oh, that’s good,” Julian Hayes said into his phone, nodding once in clear satisfaction before ending the call. The private suite was dimly lit, washed in warm amber light that reflected off glass walls overlooking the city below. Leather couches curved around a low marble table with half-empty bottles, crystal tumblers, and melting ice.Brianna was curled comfortably against Julian on the couch, one leg draped over his lap as she traced lazy circles on his arm. “What was that about?” she asked, tilting her head up to look at him.Julian’s expression darkened slightly as he set his phone down. “Victor.”Isabella, seated across from them with a glass of sparkling water in hand, stiffened. Her eyes widened almost imperceptibly. “Victor?” she repeated. “Why? Oh God, don’t tell me he’s still in the group chat.”Julian let out a short scoff as he leaned forward to grab a beer from the ice bucket beside the table. He popped it open. “Of course he is. That’s the whole point. Let him watch.
