Chapter Thirty Four

Sarah sat at the kitchen table, the morning sunlight filtering through the window, casting a warm glow over the room. She sipped her coffee, trying to shake off the unease that had settled in the pit of her stomach since receiving the letter. The words on the page seemed to taunt her, dredging up memories she had long tried to bury.

"Sarah, are you okay?" Alex's voice broke through her thoughts, and she looked up to see him standing in the doorway, concern etched on his face.

She forced a smile, though it felt strained. "I'm fine, just a little tired," she replied, setting the letter aside and focusing on her breakfast.

Alex crossed the room and took a seat beside her, his hand finding hers across the table. "You know you can talk to me, right?" he said softly, his eyes searching hers for any sign of distress.
