Chapter 2 The Argument

The house was a one-story building, so it didn’t take long before Adams finally reached the bottom of the stairs and saw his mum arranging breakfast on the table. She was wearing a fitted black suit with a pencil-tight skirt and an apron tied around her neck.

Anna was a light-skinned, beautiful woman with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a nice body curve. She was currently in her early forties, but many young men often mistook her for someone in her early twenties, which was one of the reasons men were always trying to get her attention.

Anna had raised them almost entirely on her own after divorcing her husband. She always made sure they had everything they needed, encouraged them whenever they failed, and reminded them that they could become whatever they wanted in life. Even when things became difficult, she never allowed her children to feel as though they were alone.

“Toast! I made your favorite,” Anna said as she noticed Adams walking down the stairs and heading toward the dining table. From the look on his face, she could tell he had stayed up all night playing the game, but she didn’t say a word. As long as they had agreed that it wouldn’t affect his studies, she was willing to let him enjoy his game.

“Yeah, it’s my favorite as well,” Prexy said as she stepped out from a corner, her single-strap bag hanging from her shoulder down to her knee.

Prexy was Adams’s big sister, and just like Adams, she had long, silver-white hair and blue eyes. They had inherited their hair color from their father and their eye color from their mother. Prexy was the complete opposite of Adams when it came to gaming. She didn’t like playing online games, and boys were always chasing after her because of her beautiful looks and curves. In many ways, she was like a younger, premium version of their mother.

She was two years older than Adams and had just gained admission into college. Among her peers, she was considered one of the prettiest girls, which made many other girls want to be friends with her wherever she went. She sometimes used that advantage to introduce girls to Adams, but every time Adams met one of them, things somehow ended in disaster.

Prexy didn’t like her brother’s current situation. She had even suggested that Adams reveal his identity as one of the top legends in Crimson Online. If the girls at school discovered that he was the legendary player they admired, they would probably rush after him. Adams, however, had rejected the idea because he was afraid of how his bullies would react if they discovered that he was the same player who had completed countless quests, dominated NPCs, won PvP duels against other players, and taken their valuable items.

“Lunch money,” Anna said, holding several dollar notes in both hands. She handed some to Prexy and the rest to Adams.

“What’s next? Ahh…” Anna scanned the dining table, making sure nothing was missing.

“Mom, aren’t you having a big presentation at your office today?” Prexy asked.

“Ahhh… yes,” Anna replied, glancing at her wristwatch. “And it’s now.”

“Then you have to go. Don’t worry about us. We’ll be okay,” Prexy said.

“All right. If you need anything, you can use my credit card,” Anna added.

She quickly removed the apron, revealing her black suit and white inner shirt. She then kissed Prexy and Adams on the cheeks before heading out the door.

Prexy and Adams enjoyed the toast Anna had made, and within a few minutes, they were both full.

Adams stood up to leave, but Prexy grabbed his arm and looked him directly in the eyes.

“Are you all right?”

He scoffed and forced a smile. “Don’t start with all this big-sister stuff, Prexy. Of course, I’m alright.”

From the way Adams spoke, Prexy could tell that her brother wasn’t all right. She had heard several stories about how her brother was being bullied, and she had even witnessed it a few times when she was with him. She hated seeing it happen. Every day, she came up with different ideas about how they could stop the bullies, but Adams refused every single one of them, including the idea of telling their mother what was happening.

Their mother would have done everything in her power to stop the bullies, but Adams felt that she had already done so much for them. He believed this was something he needed to handle by himself.

Whenever Adams came home with bruises, Prexy would always want to tell their mother what was going on, but Adams would simply signal her not to say anything. Because she didn’t want to betray her brother’s trust, she would keep quiet. She cared deeply about him, and right now, she was doing everything she could to bring that smile to his face.

“Stop lying to me, Adams. You’re not all right. I know that. I can see it all over your face,” Prexy said as she stood up and gripped Adams’s arms.

Adams sighed before speaking. “My friends and I are still working on what to do, Prexy. And trust me, it’s going to work, so there’s no need to worry yourself.”

“I’m worried, Adams,” Prexy replied.

She quickly reached into her bag and pulled out three pieces of paper. Written at the top of each paper were the words SELF-DEFENSE CLASS, followed by questions and spaces for answers.

“These are self-defense class forms. I bought them for you and your friends,” Prexy said with a smile.

Adams scoffed. He walked closer to Prexy and gave her a hug. It lasted for a few seconds before he pulled back and smiled at her.

“Thanks for being the best big sister ever. I’d love to go to the self-defense classes, but I can’t sacrifice my game time.”

Prexy paused and stared at her brother. She couldn’t believe what she had just heard. For a few seconds, she thought he had finally accepted her idea for once, but now he was telling her that he couldn’t go because of his game time.

“Do you understand how stupid that sounds?” she asked. “I’m not telling you to stop playing Crimson Online. I know how much you love that game. But you can’t spend your whole life hiding behind a helmet.”

*Whistle!* *Whistle!*

A loud whistle came from outside, and Adams immediately knew who it was.

“Time to leave, Prexy. My friends are here. Don’t worry yourself. We’ve got it under control,” Adams said as he grabbed his bag from the table and headed toward the door.

“You’ve been saying that for a long time. Speak to your friends. I’m sure they will—”

Prexy didn’t even get to finish her sentence before Adams shut the door, leaving her alone.
