“No, no… please don’t do that,” Jake requested quickly, his voice trembling with fear as he glanced nervously around the empty stairwell. “I swear I’ll have the money soon. Lyra trusts me now. She actually believes I’m the genius who saved her company.”

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Jake tightened his grip on the phone, sweat droplets forming on his forehead.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">“It won’t be long before I convince her to invest a huge amount of her company’s money into one of my business projects,” Jake said anxiously. “Once she signs the papers and transfers the funds, I’ll be able to pay off my debt immediately. Just give me a few more days… please.”

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">A heavy silence settled on the other end of the line.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Then the caller finally spoke again, his voice low, cold, and threatening.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">“This is your last chance, Jake. If we don’t receive our money within the next few days, there will be consequences.”

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">The man paused briefly before adding in a chilling tone,

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">“And trust me… you do not want to find out what happens when we lose our patience.”

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Then the line went dead with a click.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Jake slowly put down the phone, his hand shaking so much he almost dropped it down the stairwell. He leaned against the wall then took a deep breath, wiping the sweat from his face.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">The truth was a burden.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Over the past few years, every single one of Jake’s businesses had failed, leaving him drowning in debt to some very dangerous people.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">The wealthy, successful image he presented to the world, the expensive suits, the luxury car, the confident smile was nothing more than a carefully crafted illusion designed to fool everyone around him.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">In reality, Jake was broke, desperate, and running out of time.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">If he could win Lyra over, marry her, and gain access to her company’s money, all of his problems would disappear.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Taking a deep breath, he straightened his tie before forcing a calm, confident smile onto his face once again and stepped out into the hallway.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">The door to the emergency ward creaked open as Brandon walked in. Maggie was sitting up in bed with a bunch of pillows behind her. She looked very pale and her big brown eyes were open and she was holding her teddy bear tight.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">When she saw Brandon, she did not cry. Instead she looked really worried.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">"Daddy," Maggie said in a small voice. "I am so sorry."

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Brandon’s heart felt like it was hurting. He walked over to her then sat down on the bed. He took her hand in his. "Why are you saying sorry Maggie? You did not do anything wrong sweetie."

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">“I made trouble again, didn’t I?” Maggie whispered as tears rolled down her cheeks. “I got sick again, and it probably cost a lot of money. ”

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Her small fingers tightened around her teddy bear as her voice trembled.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">“If Mommy finds out I got sick again… she might like me even less.” Maggie lowered her head sadly. “What if she doesn’t want to come to my birthday anymore because I keep causing problems?”

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Brandon felt a pain in his heart when he heard this. No child should be afraid of becoming unwanted to her own mother.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">He gently wiped away her tears before giving her the warmest smile he could manage.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">“Oh, Maggie, no,” Brandon said softly as he wiped away her tears. “Mommy doesn’t hate you. She’s just really busy with work right now, you know how she is. None of this is your fault.”

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Maggie looked up at him hopefully.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">“Really? So Mommy isn’t mad at me? She’s still coming to my birthday party, right? Mommy said she would help me cut the cake.” Her eyes sparkled with hope as she looked at him. “Do you think she remembers?”

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Brandon felt a lump in his throat.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">"Of course Mommy will be there," Brandon said with a big smile. "She promised us. ”

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">No matter what happened between him and Lyra, he would do everything in his power to make sure Maggie had a happy birthday. He would make sure Lyra kept the promise she made to their daughter.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">The next three days passed painfully slowly.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Brandon never left Maggie’s side throughout her stay in the hospital.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">During those days, his phone remained completely silent.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Lyra never called.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">She never sent a single message asking about Maggie or checking if they were okay. It slowly began to feel as if the two of them no longer existed in her world.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">In the past, Brandon would have panicked. He would have called Lyra over and over again, begging her to answer while sending long messages explaining Maggie’s condition.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">But this time, Brandon did nothing.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">He simply placed his phone face down on the table beside the hospital bed and devoted every bit of his attention to taking care of Maggie.

Tomorrow is Maggies birthday.

Maggies condition stabilized a bit. Anxious to leave the sterile, noisy room, she pulled on Brandons sleeve, begging to go home so she could wake up in her own bed for her birthday tomorrow.

Okay, baby,Brandon said softly as he kissed her forehead. Lets pack your things and leave from here. Tomorrow is your birthday, and we still have a lot to do at home. Well buy anything you want, decorate your room together, and make this the best birthday ever for my little princess.

Maggie clapped her hands with a smile. "Yes! We need to make the living room look nice to surprise Mommy!

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">“Yes, let's surprise Mommy!” Brandon said with a faint smile.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">The drive back to the suburbs was really calm. Maggie watched the trees go by and hummed a tune to herself. When Brandon pulled the car into the driveway of their house, he took a slow breath and got ready to start decorating as soon as they went inside.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Brandon unlocked the door and held Maggie's hand and when the door opened they both stopped and stared.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">The front hallway and living room were looking amazing.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">There were banners that said "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" in gold letters and lots of balloons floating around.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">The walls had party decorations on them. There was a big table in the middle of the room with bright tablecloths on it.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Maggie was so surprised and happy. She let go of Brandon's hand as she gasped with her eyes shining with excitement.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">"Oh my gosh, Daddy! Look!" Maggie exclaimed, jumping up and down. "Mommy did it! Mommy came home early. She made the house look pretty for me! It's a surprise party! She really didn't forget my birthday!"

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Brandon was also really surprised. He stared at the decorations and felt a little better. After what happened at the hospital he thought Lyra would not care about Maggie's birthday. It seemed like she actually put in some effort.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">The happy moment did not last long.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">"Hey! Don't touch that! Those are my balloons!" a mean voice said from upstairs. “Let go of the balloon.”

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Brandon's smile disappeared when he looked up.

mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Leo, Jake's son, was running down the stairs. He was wearing a party hat as he snatched the balloon from Maggie's hand. "This is my party! Go away!"

  • I'M DEEPLY SORRY, YOUNG MASTER

The heavy silence inside the lobby was so thick that even the soft pattern of rain against the glass roof could be heard clearly.A dozen security guards slowly advanced, their metal batons sliding free with sharp clacking sounds. They surrounded Brandon from every direction, their tense expressions making it obvious they were ready to attack at the slightest command."You're still acting arrogant, huh?" the manager asked with a deep frown.Brandon merely hummed."I haven't said anything arrogant," he replied calmly. "Just let me go upstairs, and this will end peacefully."The manager's expression darkened."How dare you talk back to me?" She snapped. "Have you forgotten your place? Is it because I've been speaking to you too politely?"One of the security guards stepped forward and cracked his knuckles."Allow me, Manager," he said with a cold grin. "I'll crack his head open and make sure he never talks back again."The manager stood behind the wall of guards, a satisfied smile sprea

Unaware of the storm brewing around him, Brandon pushed through the glass doors and stepped back into the hotel from the rain.He shook the water from his jacket and adjusted his grip on the small paper bag containing the medicine. His wet boots left faint tracks across the polished marble floor as he headed toward the elevators.Brandon never noticed the man standing partially hidden behind a massive marble pillar near the entrance.George remained in the shadows, his eyes fixed on Brandon's retreating figure.Shock flickered across h

  • BRING HIM TO ME

Inside the suite on the thirteenth floor, Brandon had just placed a glass of water on the nightstand when a soft groan drifted from the bed.He paused and glanced over his shoulder. The woman stirred beneath the blankets, her brows knitted together in discomfort. However, not wanting to involve himself in her matters, Brandon turned toward the door, intending to leave and finally get some rest. But as he passed the bed, a small hand suddenly shot out and grabbed the fabric of his gray shirt. Her fingers clutched it tightly, almost desperately, as if she was afraid he would disappear the moment she let go.Her small hand held his shirt with all the strength left in her as she did not want to let him go."Don't go," she pleaded weakly, her eyes half-closed. "Please don't leave me alone in the dark. I feel sick... My stomach hurts." Her face twisted in pain. "It really hurts..."Brandon looked down at the hand gripping his sleeve. When he tried to gently pull her fingers away, she sudden

  • YOUNG MASTER GEORGE?

"Y-You... you're actually shouting at me?" The woman stared at him in disbelief. "Do you even know who I am?""I don't care," Brandon replied coldly. He leaned back in his chair, his expression completely indifferent."You're sitting in my room without my permission. You're drinking, talking endlessly, and disturbing my peace." His eyes met hers without the slightest hesitation. "So yes, I have every right to say whatever I want and raise my voice if I feel like it."For a moment, the room fell silent. The woman looked at him with tear-filled eyes, no one had ever spoken to her like that before. Most people either envied her wealth, wanted something from her family, or tried to curry favor with her by agreeing with everything she said. Some were so eager to gain her family's support that they would have happily nodded along to any nonsense she spoke.Throughout her life, she had heard the same words over and over again.People always told her that it was better to cry in a luxury car

  • AT LEAST TELL ME YOUR NAME

“What do I want?” The woman let out a soft laugh.“I think we have a long night ahead of us to figure that out.” She gestured toward the empty chair across from her. “Come, sit down and keep me company for a while.”She settled into the armchair beside the window, crossing her legs gracefully beneath her silk gown. Picking up the bottle, she poured red wine into two crystal glasses before extending one toward him.Brandon didn't take it.Instead, he walked over to the desk and pulled out the chair opposite her. Sitting down, he folded his arms across his chest and leaned back slightly. His expression remained cold and unreadable…. He didn't touch the wine, he didn't speak either. He simply watched her with quiet, emotionless eyes. The woman did not seem to mind that Brandon did not take the wine. She took a gulp of the wine using it to help her talk. A sad smile was on her lips as she looked at the glass."You probably think I'm some crazy woman who likes playing games," the woman sai

  • I'M TIRED

The only light came from the pale moon shining through the floor-to-ceiling window.Brandon sat motionless on the edge of the bed. He had removed his boots and changed into a simple gray T-shirt and loose trousers. His hands rested on his knees, and his eyes remained fixed on the wall ahead. On the nightstand beside him, his phone kept vibrating.Again…. And again…. And again. The screen lit up the dark room every few seconds, displaying the same name over and over.LYRA.The constant buzzing echoed through the silence, yet Brandon never reached for the phone. He didn't even glance at it.He simply sat there, staring blankly ahead as the calls continued to come one after another."It doesn't matter anymore," Brandon murmured to himself, his voice was flat and emotionless. There was no anger left, no sadness, and no resentment. In his mind, he was already done with Lyra. The room at the Grand Horizon
