The Thing That Shouldn't Wake
Chapter 8: The Thing That Shouldn't Wake The prison seal shattered. Ancient chains snapped like brittle twine. Dust fell like ash as the mountain groaned. The chamber rumbled violently — as if reality itself resisted what was about to emerge. From the cracked doorway, a skeletal hand wreathed in black lightning reached out. Then came the voice again — hollow, ancient, and echoing from every direction at once: “You opened the path. Now I walk it once more.” Xuan Long stepped in front of Mei Lin, summoning his spear. The weapon pulsed with his twin flames — Devourer black and Celestial gold — but even that light flickered in the presence of what now stood before them. A figure emerged from the prison. Nine feet tall. Skinless, like it had been burned away by time. Its eyes were twin vortexes, and its body was wrapped in living sigils that constantly shifted across its flesh. Chains dragged behind it, some still glowing faintly with failed sealing talismans. “What… is that?” Mei Lin whispered. The War Immortal answered grimly. “That’s not just a spirit. That’s The First Devourer. The one who lost control. The one the gods buried.” Xuan Long’s breath caught in his throat. “Then why is it waking now?” “Because your awakening called to it. You carry its legacy. Its sin. And now… it wants it back.” The creature lifted its head and sniffed the air like a beast. Then it spoke again. “Give me the Flame, boy.” Boom. Without waiting, the monster charged. Xuan Long barely had time to raise his spear as the First Devourer closed the distance, swinging a fist that cracked the chamber wall behind them even as he dodged. Xuan retaliated, thrusting his spear into the monster’s shoulder. It pierced. But the wound… didn’t bleed. Instead, the creature laughed — a hollow, soulless laugh. “Flames. Run. Hunger. Run. Burn.” It grabbed the spear mid-shaft and hurled Xuan Long across the cavern like a ragdoll. He crashed into a pillar, the stone crumbling beneath him. Bones groaned. Pain surged. But he stood again. He had to. Mei Lin unleashed her own flames, launching a dozen crimson blades toward the creature’s back. They struck — exploding in bursts of energy. Smoke. Then silence. “Did that—?” The smoke cleared. The First Devourer turned slowly. Untouched. It grinned. Then its voice echoed again. “The gods feared me. The stars sealed me. And still I hunger.” “Now I see… you are incomplete.” The runes across its body began to glow as it raised both arms. The entire cavern started collapsing. “Run!” Xuan Long shouted, grabbing Mei Lin’s wrist. They bolted as the ceiling fell behind them, the creature’s laughter shaking the stone. They sprinted through the Hall of Silence, dodging falling debris and fireballs. Ancient statues crumbled. Ghostly voices screamed from the walls as old magic unraveled. Up the spiral staircase. Past the broken altar. Through the ruined entrance gate. The moment they crossed the threshold, Xuan Long turned and slammed his palm into the gate’s seal. BOOM. The symbols reignited. The gate re-locked. For now. He collapsed to his knees, gasping. Mei Lin slumped beside him, equally breathless. “That thing…” she whispered. “It’s not done.” “Correct,” the War Immortal said darkly. “The seal will hold for a while, but now that it’s active again, it will gather strength. And worst of all — it’s linked to you now. It can follow your Flame.” “So what, I just sit and wait for it to catch me?” “No. You get stronger. Fast. Because next time, the seal won’t save you.” Xuan Long stood slowly. His entire body trembled — not from fear, but from fury. “I’ve had enough of being hunted.” He looked to the east, toward the tallest peak of the Eastern Sky Range. Beyond it… lay the Land of Heaven’s Remnants — a place filled with ruined temples, lost techniques, and forbidden scrolls. “The Final Path… leads through that range,” he said. “I saw it in the vision. The only place strong enough to teach me how to master the Flame completely.” Mei Lin nodded. “Then we go.” But before they could move, a whisper slithered into their minds. “You burned the sky, child. The stars have noticed.” A scroll burst into flames at Xuan Long’s side — an old talisman given to him years ago by the Grand Elder before his betrayal. As it burned, it projected a single name into the sky: "WANTED: XUAN LONG — CURSED BLOOD. DEAD OR SEALED." And below it, glowing red: REWARD: IMMORTAL ASCENSION PASS Every bounty hunter. Every rogue cultivator. Every greedy sect. Now knew his name. Now knew what he carried. And now… they were all coming.

Heavenly Rebirth: The Outcast Return The Man behind the Crown
ChAPTER 27 The Throne Hall was built to inspire awe. And fear. Thirty-seven steps led up to the dais, each engraved with a golden dragon curling toward the center. Atop that platform, behind a silk veil, the figure of the Crown Prince waited—half-lit, half-shrouded. Xuan Long stood at the base of the stairs, his shadow stretched like a blade across the floor. Neither man spoke. Not at first. Eyes Across a Divide “You still climb like a warrior,” Lu Shen said softly. “Not like a prince.” Xuan’s jaw flexed. “I climb like a man who remembers the fall.” Lu Shen didn’t smile, but something flickered across his face. Regret? Pity? Power? “You shouldn’t be here,” the Crown Prince said. “And yet,” Xuan said, “here I am.” Past That Still Bleeds A servant enter

Heavenly Rebirth: The Outcast Return Whisper under the throne
ChaPTER 26 The Imperial Capital was not a city. It was a machine. Wheels within wheels. Spires of jade and gold piercing the sky. Courtyards so silent you could hear secrets die in the corners. When Xuan Long entered through the East Gate, dressed in the scorched robes of a wandering cultivator, no one recognized him. Not yet. But the wind shifted. The walls murmured. Something had returned. Disguises and Smugglers The guards barely looked up as Xuan passed, dragging behind him a broken wagon covered in cloth. Mei Lin’s unconscious form was hidden beneath, tucked in crates filled with fake medicinal herbs. He’d bought the pass from a caravan smuggler—one glance at Xuan’s eyes had been enough for the man to drop his price and hand over the token in silence. Fear had its uses. But e

Heavenly Rebirth: The Outcast Return The Man who returned was not the same
CHAPTER 25 The wind didn’t feel the same. Xuan Long stepped out of the Temple of Forgotten Light carrying Mei Lin in his arms, but the mountains didn’t welcome him back. They recoiled. Clouds trembled. Birds scattered. Even the air grew still. He wasn’t just a cultivator now. He was something else. And the world could sense it. A World Shifted in His Absence They hadn’t been gone for long. Or so he thought. But when he descended the cliffside path toward the valley, something felt… off. The air was denser. The trees had bloomed out of season. And the flags that once marked the boundary of Bai Ren’s encampment were gone. Too quiet. No laughter. No guard rotations. Not even footprints in the soil. Xuan moved slower, hyper-aware of every leaf crunch beneath his feet. M

Heavenly Rebirth: The Outcast Return The temple that remembers
CHAPTER 24 The mountain air thinned as Xuan Long ascended. Each step forward peeled another layer from his memory—echoes clawing up from some forbidden chamber of his soul. The climb to the Temple of Forgotten Light was never meant to be physical. It was spiritual. Mental. A trial of truths buried and sealed. And now… He felt every secret pressing against his ribs. The fog thickened. The path narrowed. Somewhere behind him, Bai Ren’s voice was still screaming his name. But Xuan didn’t stop. The Temple Gates The gates didn’t open. They breathed. Stone twisted, vines recoiled, and two serpent statues that had once been mere carvings lifted their heads. “Blood of the Flame,” hissed one, voice scraping like metal on stone. “Son of the Reaper,” the other growled. Xuan stared

Heavenly Rebirth: The Outcast Return After the Shatter
CHAPTER 23 The world didn’t end with a scream. It ended with silence. Not the peaceful kind. The kind that crushes your ears because nothing is left. Xuan Long lay in the center of the wreckage, eyes barely open, ribs splintered. Ash clung to his skin. The last echoes of the battlefield still flickered across his vision like ghosts—blades flashing, fire devouring bodies, and Mei Lin’s scream before it all went black. He didn’t know how long he’d been unconscious. All he knew was pain. The kind that doesn’t pulse or throb anymore. It just… is. He turned his head slowly. Something cracked in his neck. Dust rained from his hair. His right arm twitched, hand grazing something soft. A ribbon. Red. Torn at the ends. Mei Lin’s. “No…” His voice rasped out like sand. “Mei Lin.” He tri

Heavenly Rebirth: The Outcast Return Flames of Betrayal, Wings of Reckoning
Chapter 22 “Some wars aren’t won by power. They’re survived by pain.” Xuan Long hit the battlefield like a meteor, Devourer Flame spiraling off him in violent arcs of red and silver. The moment his feet touched the twisted earth, the first wave of shadow-warriors came at him from all sides. They looked like people he had once loved. People who had once tried to kill him. His first mentor. His childhood friend. His own mother. But their eyes were hollow. Puppets. Not real. At least, that’s what he told himself as he drove a burning knee into the first one’s gut, twisted, and snapped the second’s neck with a spin-kick that scorched the air. “They’re not real,” he growled to himself. “They’re not real…” But it didn’t stop the ache. Didn’t stop the way the air felt like grief every time he stru
