Chapter 1- Public Humiliation

The rain fell like judgment from the heavens, cold, heavy, and unrelenting.

Ethan Cole stood outside the Crystal Crown Hotel, drenched and trembling. The storm outside was nothing compared to the one tearing through his chest. Muddy water suppress into his worn shoes with every small shift of his weight. In his hands, the small delivery box felt heavier than it should. It served as his only excuse for being here on this night. Golden light spilled from the grand entrance, mocking him with its warmth and luxury. Inside that world of crystal chandeliers and champagne glasses, people were celebrating. People who truly belonged.

But he never did.

Tonight was supposed to be the night everything changed for him. The night he finally proved to Sophia and to himself that his love was enough to bridge the massive gap between their worlds. In his jacket pocket, the small velvet ring box pressed against his heart like a fragile promise. Three long years had gone into that ring. Three years of waking up before dawn for endless delivery routes. Three years of working late nights at noisy construction sites. Three years of skipping meals so he could save every single extra dollar. Three years of watching Sophia shine in her expensive dresses while he smiled and told her he was fine even when exhaustion weighed him down like chains. He had believed, foolishly and desperately, that if he just loved her hard enough, his lack of money would not matter in the end.

Now, standing here soaked and already humiliated before he had even walked through the doors, that belief was cracking badly.

He took a shaky breath and stepped forward toward the entrance.

A broad shouldered security guard moved to block his path instantly. “Delivery staff use the back entrance.”

“I am not here for delivery,” Ethan said, his voice quieter than he wanted it to be. “I am here to see Sophia Hart. Please. It is important.”

The guard looked him over slowly, taking in his wet hair plastered to his forehead, his cheap soaked clothes, and his muddy shoes. Then the man let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “You?”

Before Ethan could respond, a voice he knew too well sliced through the rain like a blade.

“Well, well. If it is not Sophia’s little charity project.”

Ethan’s stomach twisted violently with fear. .

Daniel Brooks strolled forward with his usual crew of rich and arrogant friends. Their tailored suits and gleaming watches looked obscene under the bright hotel lights. Daniel’s eyes glittered with pure contempt and amusement.

“You actually had the nerve to show up tonight?” Daniel laughed loudly. “I told Sophia you were pathetic, but this is next level. Still playing delivery boy on the biggest night of her life? Have you no shame at all?”

His friends roared with laughter. One of them raised his phone and started recording the scene with clear excitement.

Ethan’s throat burned with humiliation. He wanted to snap back with something sharp, but the words would not come. All he could think about was Sophia’s smile, the one she used to give him when they were alone. The one that once made him believe he was enough for her.

The hotel doors opened again. Sophia stepped out with several guests, radiant in a flowing red evening gown. Diamonds glittered at her throat like distant stars he could never reach. For one painful heartbeat, Ethan’s chest flooded with a mixture of love and desperate hope.

“Sophia,” he whispered, stepping toward her with the delivery box still clutched tightly.

Her eyes widened at first, then narrowed in visible horror. The warmth he had always seen in them was completely gone. Only embarrassment and clear disgust remained on her beautiful face.

“Ethan? What the hell are you doing here?” Her voice was sharp and loud enough for the growing crowd to hear every word clearly.

“I came for you,” he said, his voice cracking slightly under the weight of emotion. “I needed to see you tonight. There is something I have been wanting to ask you for a long time.”

She raised a hand quickly, cutting him off without hesitation. “Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is? For me? For my family? You show up looking like this on tonight of all nights? Soaked and carrying a delivery box like some kind of joke?”

The words sliced deeper than any knife ever could. Ethan felt his heart splinter painfully inside his chest.

Daniel slid an arm around Sophia’s waist possessively and pulled her closer to him. “Maybe the poor guy just came hoping for leftovers from the party. Or perhaps he is here to beg for some spare change from the guests.”

Laughter erupted around them like heavy thunder.

Sophia sighed heavily and crossed her arms, her expression growing colder. “Ethan, we need to talk.”

His pulse pounded loudly in his ears. “Okay. Anything you want.”

She looked him straight in the eyes, her voice flat and final. “We are done.”

The world seemed to stop spinning around him.

“What?” Ethan breathed, feeling as if the ground had vanished beneath his feet.

“You are poor, Ethan. You have nothing. No money, no status, no future to offer anyone. My family will never accept you. I cannot keep pretending that this relationship, whatever it was, can actually work. I deserve better than this life of constant struggle and embarrassment.”

Each word landed like a fresh wound to his soul. Three years of memories flashed rapidly through his mind. He remembered her head resting on his shoulder during quiet late night talks. He remembered her soft promises that money did not matter to her. He remembered the way she used to laugh at his jokes even when they were not funny. All of it, apparently, had been nothing but a lie she told to keep him around until something better appeared.

Daniel grinned smugly beside her. “And luckily for her, she has found someone who actually belongs in her world now.”

Ethan’s vision blurred. It was not from the rain, but from the hot sting of tears he fought desperately to hold back. His chest felt tight and hollow at the same time. With trembling fingers, he pulled out the velvet ring box from his pocket and opened it slowly. The small diamond caught the light, modest and imperfect, but chosen with every ounce of love and sacrifice he possessed.

Sophia stared at it for a second, then let out a bitter and humiliating laugh. “You actually bought that? For me? It looks so cheap next to everything in there. Did you really think this would impress anyone?”

Daniel snatched the box from his hand, examined the ring with exaggerated disdain, and tossed it carelessly into a muddy puddle nearby.

Something inside Ethan shattered completely in that moment.

He dropped to his knees in the filthy water without thinking, fingers digging through the cold mud until he found the ring. He clutched it tightly in his palm. The diamond was now as dirty and ruined as he felt inside.

Daniel stepped forward and shoved him hard in the chest.

Ethan fell backward onto the wet pavement. Sharp pain exploded through his elbow and back. The crowd’s laughter echoed around him like thunder. Phones captured every humiliating second of his fall.

Daniel crouched beside him, voice low and venomous. “Look at you. A pathetic nobody who actually believed he could marry into this world. Wake up, delivery boy. She was never yours to begin with.”

He kicked the delivery box away forcefully. Its contents spilled into the gutter and washed away in the pouring rain.

Ethan lay there for a long moment, rain mixing with the tears he could no longer stop. His chest felt completely hollow. Three years of love, sacrifice, and quiet hope had been reduced to public entertainment for the wealthy.

Slowly and painfully, he pushed himself to his feet. His fists clenched tightly at his sides, but he said nothing. There was nothing left to say that could fix this.

Head bowed against the storm and the unbearable weight of shame, Ethan turned and walked away into the darkness.

The rain kept falling heavily around him.

And in that moment, Ethan Cole felt truly, completely, and utterly broken.
