The forest trembled even though there was no feel of wind in this part of the forest.
The forest seemed to be engulfed in daylight, something no one would miss for miles and miles to come. Golden fire rolled across the shattered platform in violent waves, crawling through broken roots and splintered wood like living creatures searching for something to devour. Heat pressed against every tree in the clearing until bark blackened and glowing leaves curled inward. The drums had stopped. No one dared to move. The tree nymphs stood frozen beneath the silver lanterns, their golden eyes wide with fear as they stared at the boy standing in the center of the ruined ceremony. Only he did not look like a boy anymore. The flames wrapping around Kael’s body pulsed slowly beneath cracked skin glowing molten gold. Thin streams of smoke rose from his shoulders while the air around him warped from heat. Even the roots beneath his feet recoiled. Kael lifted his head, his eyes no longer looked human. Gold burned inside them. A low sound escaped him then; not quite a breath, not quite a growl. The entire forest seemed to shrink from it. Several nymph guards stumbled backward instinctively, their spears lowering as fear spread visibly through the crowd. Lyra remained trapped near the center platform, roots still twisted tightly around her wrists and legs. Even she stared at Kael silently for half a second. She'd seen him like this back at the cliff and back at Astra but even she was lost for words every time. How could something be so blissful and fearful at the same time? Not because she feared him. Kael turned toward the nymph king slowly. The movement alone made the flames surge higher. “Release her.” The voice that left him did not fully belong to him anymore. It echoed unnaturally through the forest, deep and layered, as though something ancient spoke beneath his own words. Several lanterns shattered from the force of it. The nymph king stiffened immediately. His golden eyes widened in recognition. By the light, he's only ever read about this creature.. this power in the books! His father had claimed to be friends with the dragons and even he was lost for words when he met the man with Kael’s power. The king took one slow step backward. Around him, the other nymphs began whispering frantically in their ancient tongue. “He bears it…” “The fire…” “It cannot be…” One of the older nymph women suddenly dropped to her knees, trembling violently as she stared at Kael. The king silenced them sharply without taking his eyes off him. Kael stepped forward once. The platform beneath his feet blackened instantly. “Release,” he repeated, voice shaking the branches overhead, “her.” The roots binding Lyra loosened immediately. Not because the king commanded it. Hell, even the forest itself was afraid. The vines uncoiled rapidly from her arms and legs like snakes fleeing fire. Lyra stumbled slightly as she regained balance, one hand gripping her sword tightly while her eyes remained fixed on Kael. The flames around him continued growing hotter. Too hot. Leaves high above began catching fire one by one and panic spread through the crowd. “The sacred trees!” “He burns the haven!” “Please do not ruin us!” But no one dared move closer. The king finally found his voice. “You…” he whispered. Kael’s glowing eyes snapped toward him. The king immediately lowered his gaze. That single action stunned every nymph present more than the flames themselves. Their king feared no mage. Yet now he could barely stand beneath Kael’s gaze. “You know what he is,” Kael said. The deep voice echoed again through the clearing. The king’s face tightened visibly.“Yes,” he admitted quietly. Lyra frowned. He does? How? Kael took another step forward. “Then say it.” The king visibly recoiled. “No.” His voice was laced with desperation. Saying his name? He wasn't even fit to stand in his presence. Several nearby nymphs stared at their ruler in confusion. The king swallowed hard, his voice lowering further. “That name should not be spoken.” The flames around Kael pulsed violently. “Why?” The king looked at him then, truly looked at him, and whatever he saw made the color drain from his face. “You carry the fire of the First Tyrants,” he whispered. “The sky burners. The dragon-blooded.” Murmurs exploded through the crowd. “It cannot be…” “They were hunted…” “Extinct…” Kael’s expression twisted slightly at the words. Inside his chest, something stirred violently. The voice returned again inside his mind. ‘Burn them. We are not Tyrants!’ Kael’s breathing roughened almost like he just returned from a deep sleep. Hell, it felt like he was locked in a dark room for a moment.. The fire around him surged higher and nearby trees ignited fully now. Nymphs screamed as flames spread across hanging bridges overhead. Lyra’s eyes widened. “Kael.” He did not answer. The king suddenly dropped to one knee. Every nymph in the clearing froze. “We meant no offense,” the king said quickly. “Leave this place. Take your chosen and go.” Kael stared at him silently. The king lowered his head further. “Please.” The single word echoed strangely through the stunned clearing. Lyra moved carefully toward Kael now. “Kael,” she called again, softer this time. His flames flickered violently. She stopped an arm’s length away. The heat pouring from him was unbearable now, sweat formed instantly against her skin. But she ignored it. “You got me out,” she said quietly. “We need to leave.” Kael’s gaze moved toward her slowly. For one terrible second, Lyra thought he truly did not recognize her. Then the flames around him weakened slightly. The pressure in the air eased. Lyra exhaled thankfully. “That’s it,” she murmured. “Come back.” The golden cracks along Kael’s arms flickered unevenly now. The dragon voice hissed angrily inside him. Kael clenched his fists hard enough to shake. Lyra stepped closer despite the heat. “Kael.” His eyes finally focused properly on her. And just like that, the flames lowered. He heads towards the exit without another word, Lyra tailing a few steps away from him as the forest more or less parted for them to walk through. Nobody followed them, until they were at the entrance into the nymph forest. Kael swayed suddenly. The transformation had drained him far more than he realized. His breathing turned uneven as the fire across his skin began fading in unstable pulses. Lyra noticed immediately. “Kael?” He blinked slowly. The gold in his eyes dimmed and his knees buckled. Lyra barely caught him before he hit the ground fully. The remaining flames vanished almost instantly the moment he collapsed against her. Smoke curled weakly from his clothes and his body felt burning hot. Lyra groaned under his weight as she adjusted her grip around him. “Oh, for the love of the gods,” she muttered breathlessly. “You could not wait until we were farther away?”Latest Chapter
Chapter 29: Possibly Lyra's Worst Nightmare.
Kael's eyes opened slowly as his head throbbed. A dull ache pulsed behind his eyes while warmth from the fireplace flickered weakly against his face. For a moment, he simply stared upward at the wooden ceiling above him, blinking slowly as memory struggled to return.“Roset!” he muttered. Kael shot upright too quickly. He winces as pain explodes through his skull.“Ypure alive? I was starting to worry I would be forced to give you a burial.” Liam’s voice rumbled somewhere nearby.Kael ignored him completely. “Roset..”He remembered her being dragged off by the guards and Lyra knocking him out before he could do anything. “She is gone.”Lyra’s answer came from the far side of the room. Kael turned sharply toward her.She sat near the window sharpening her sword beneath the dim orange glow of lanternlight like nothing had happened. That somehow made him angrier. “What do you mean gone?” he snapped.Lyra did not look up. “I mean the men took her.”Kael shoved himself fully to his f
Chapter 29: The Silk Girl
Kael hated crowds. It was simply because the air smelled of roasted nuts, horse sweat, fresh bread, and too many people pressed together beneath narrow streets.Meadow’s market had all of that. Kael had never liked crowded places but now, he had a valid reason why he might hate them even more. What if someone recognises him? True he hasn't seen any picture of him being plastered anywhere in the small settlement but that doesn't mean travelers haven't.So he kept his cloth mask covering his nose and mouth. His hood stayed low as he followed behind Lyra through the busy marketplace, carrying two sacks of grain over his shoulder while trying not to stumble into merchants and wandering children.Lyra walked ahead of him. Her face remained hidden beneath the dark cloth mask wrapped around her mouth as well.“Why do we need grain?” he muttered beneath his breath.“Would you rather we starve?” Lyra had recently developed the habit of answering his questions with more questions. She realise
Chapter 28: Gifted Hands
The grass still carried droplets of cold dew that soaked through Kael’s boots each time he ran past the training posts. His arms burned. His shoulders burned. Even his fingers ached. The two wooden buckets hanging from the pole across his shoulders sloshed dangerously as he jogged unevenly around the field. That alone felt like victory.A week ago he could barely take three steps without spilling half the water into the dirt. Now he could make almost two full laps before losing balance.Kael gritted his teeth as the buckets swayed again. “Steady… steady…”Water splashed over the rim anyway. From somewhere behind him, Liam’s voice thundered immediately.“I SAW THAT.”Kael nearly tripped. “It was one drop!”Liam tuts his teeth in disappointment. Kael muttered darkly beneath his breath and kept moving. The old man sat beneath the porch roof chewing loudly on dried fruit while sharpening a carving knife against his boot. Beside him rested the dreaded wooden plank he used for “instruction.
Chapter 27: First Practice
The air smelled of wet earth, chopped herbs, and smoke from the cooking fire outside Liam’s small home. And Kael was still cutting vegetables. Again. The knife struck the wooden board repeatedly, sounding like the beating of a drum with one stick. Carrots. Turnips. Onions. By the light, always onions. He’s been at it for days now! He might as well open his own shade in the market! Kael sat cross-legged beneath the shaded awning beside Liam’s hut, surrounded by baskets overflowing with vegetables. A mountain of chopped pieces already filled three wooden bowls near his knees.Sweat clung to the back of his neck and his fingers smelled permanently of onions now. Across the field, Lyra moved through combat drills with Liam. Or rather…she survived them. The old man stood barefoot in the grass holding nothing but his wooden plank while Lyra attacked him relentlessly with her sword. And somehow… He kept winning.“Too slow,” Liam barked.Lyra swung again. The plank cracked sharply against
Chapter 26: The Hunt
Rain hammered softly against the towering windows of Astra academy, covering the entire place in thick dark clouds. It might as well reflect Ronan’s foul mood that morning Inside the upper halls, Ronan sat alone at the long oak table in his workspace, shoulders stiff beneath dark ceremonial robes as stacks of decrees surrounded him.Not only is he the head of the Astra academy, he was the supreme mage of the realm; the ultimate power in the realm. Ronan signed another parchment without reading half of it, the quill moved sharply across paper. His eyes burned from exhaustion; he had not slept properly in days. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw blood on stone. His father collapsing and Kael standing there like he'd done nothing wrong. The room smelled faintly of old parchment and candle smoke. Only one lantern remained lit now, casting long shadows across the walls lined with ancient books and relics.A knock sounded at the door but Ronan did not look up.“Enter.”The heavy door
Chapter 25: Here To Suffer. And Slice Vegetables
A wooden bucket of freezing water crashed directly into Kael’s face.He shot upright with a strangled gasp, sputtering as water soaked through the thin blanket beneath him.“What in the…”“Sunrise passed already.”Master Liam stood in the doorway holding the empty bucket. The old man looked fully awake. Worse, he looked energetic.Kael wiped water from his eyes furiously. “You threw water on me!”Liam snorted. “You complain loudly for a man who wished to become stronger.”Kael looked around wildly. The small room smelled faintly of old wood and herbs. Sometime during the night, Lyra had apparently vanished because her sleeping mat sat empty near the far wall.“Where’s Lyra?”“Awake.” The old man said, "Something that appears difficult for you.” Liam shook his head and walked out of the room with a lousy house escaping his lips as he clears his throat. Half-awake and deeply offended by existence itself, Kael dragged himself outdoors into the cold mountain air.Mist rolled heavily acr
