“Let me have him,” she said, watching Charles struggle.

She sang softly. In minutes, the baby was quiet.

“Charles?” Sadie called from the door. “I couldn’t find the one you asked for, but they had another—”

She hadn’t seen her mom yet.

“Where’s he? Did you throw him in the sink or—” She froze. “Oh my God, Mom!”

“You’ll hurt the baby,” her mother warned.

Charles quickly stepped in. “I’ll make the baby’s food.”

From the kitchen, he heard the conversation.

“You didn’t tell me he had a baby,” her mom said.

“Oh, you thought it was his? No, Mom. It’s Bella’s baby.”

“Bella? Where’s she?”

“She had a shoot today. I offered to help out.”

“And you made your fiancé carry him?”

“Mom, want to hear something interesting?”

“What?”

“I really like the guy. He’s handsome, isn’t he

"Miss Emmy?” the CEO snapped, impatience bleeding into his tone.Emmy offered him a plastic smile, trying to look composed. But they both knew she had absolutely nothing under control.“Are you sure you’re the one who’s been writing these proposals?” the CEO asked, loosening his tie. He looked ready to explode, and Emmy had no power to stop the inevitable.“I’m sorry, sir. I think it’s just the stress—”“Stress?” he barked. “What damn stress? You used to submit ten proposals a week!”Ten? What kind of human coughs up ten ideas a week?“And this is your second week with nothing to show?”“I... I ran out of ideas.”“All of a sudden? After nearly two years of consistent performance? Shouldn’t you be getting better at this, not worse?” He leaned closer, his voice low and lethal. “You have two days to send me twenty viable proposals or I’ll terminate the collaboration. I don’t care what magic you used before.”

Charles glanced around. “This all you’ve got? Why am I so disappointed?” Kade's smile twitched. “You're exactly as they described you.”“I’m sorry, buddy—” Charles lunged, grabbing Kade by the neck and pressing a knife to his throat, fast and ruthless.“She’ll be up in eight minutes,” Charles whispered. “If you want her to wake up to a corpse, keep bluffing. Or you can play nice and let her think you’re a gentleman.”Kade's jaw tightened. “Drop your weapons!”One by one, the guns hit the grass.“Now,” Charles whispered in his ear, “tell them to disappear.”Kade clenched his fist tighter. “Leave us. For now.”The hidden men hesitated before melting into the background like ghosts.“You got me, huh?” Kade said, forcing a grin. “Guess I underestimated you.”Charles cocked his head. “Glad we’re on the same page. By the way…” He glanced around casually. “Where are the others who were with you earli

Charles quickly fixed a smirk on his face. “I used someone else’s. I know—stupid. I just didn’t think anyone could melt my heart the way you did.”“Naughty thing,” she said, blushing like a teenager. They sat to eat. Charles made sure to hold her gaze—firm, slow, meaningful—at least five times. By the time he asked the question that really mattered, she’d be too emotionally tangled to say no.He stabbed a piece of meat with his fork. “Where is he?” He asked, trying to sound like asking the question was one of the most boring things he'd ever done. She paused mid-bite. “I don’t know. He can rot in hell for all I care.”“But he’s your fiancé, Hat. Your future husband.”“I can never love that man!” she snapped, anger flaring in her eyes.“Because he’s Sadie Wyatt’s personal assistant?”“That’s his father’s dumb plan—make him work under powerful people to ‘learn the ropes.’ You’re a teacher, Ryan, and I’d stil

“What are you doing there?” Charles asked. “Well... we shall see, shan't we?” Charles shook his head, trying to dismiss the twisted thoughts. This was a contract relationship. Nothing more. He didn’t even bother changing before following her to the car. She looked at him and shook her head. “You’re my bodyguard.” Then it hit him. She was sleepwalking. They’d argued that afternoon; if she really wanted to go out, she’d have left without him. Shit. “I have to tell you something,” Charles said, stepping closer. “Ace is waiting,” she snapped. “Ace? Who’s Ace?” “My...” she blushed, trailing off. “Let’s go.” “But Ace’s in the

Sadie’s stomach flipped. “Reporters?” Charles’s face tensed. He didn’t like this. Not at all. “Yes, ma’am. They’re everywhere. Cameras are flashing and…some are people yelling your name.” Sadie could hear the noise in the background. “Thanks,” she said quickly and hung up. Her fingers flew across the screen as she called Kade. “I was just about to call you, ma’am,” Kade said breathlessly. “You’re all over the internet. The rumor mill’s gone wild—apparently, you had a public fight with Miss Emmy Harrington over a man.” “What?!” Sadie’s voice cracked in disbelief. “Where are you right now?” Kade asked urgently. Before she could answer, Charles reached over, snatched the phone from her hand, and ended the call. “What the hell are you doing?!” she yelled. Charles pulled the car to t

“He works at Dynamic Vaultstone. So?” Emmy laughed. “Charles, seriously? That’s your new lie?” She turned to Sadie. “He works as a nanny for some woman. My brother saw him at a grocery store last night.” Sadie looked at Charles. “Is that true?” Damn, Charles thought. They should’ve left ten minutes ago. Sadie didn’t need to go this far. “See?” Emmy said triumphantly. “He can’t even deny it. I’m so disappointed, Charles. After all the lessons I taught you about wealth and success? You think this will make you rich overnight?” She narrowed her eyes on Charles. “Do you even know who she is? When she finds out the truth, she won’t forgive you like I did. She’ll ruin you.” Sadie calmly pulled out her phone and held it up. “Is this the woman your brother saw last night?” Emmy looked
