_______Emmy’s house ______

Emmy forced herself into a pair of tight, crazy jeans—ones Charles had bought her on her last birthday. She dabbed the final touch of makeup on her face.

Exactly how Charles liked it. Or maybe not. But he had once told her she looked “cool” with this much makeup, so that had to count for something.

She pulled on a crop top that hugged all the right places. The plan was simple—make him fall all over again, while she played the innocent card.

From the way he spoke over the phone, he still had a thing for her. Otherwise, why would he sound so desperate, promising he'd be back soon?

The gate opened. She rushed to the window.

It was Charles.

She dashed downstairs and flopped onto the sofa in front of her laptop, posture casual, pretending to be preoccupied.

“Hey,” his voice hummed across the room.

“You came on time,” she said without looking at him.

“So, what wer

Later that night, Charles lay on his bed, mind replaying the day’s chaos. His phone buzzed quietly on the table beside him — his godfather calling.Shit.He answered, voice steady but wary. “How are you doing today, sir?”“Kid, you nearly gave me a heart attack seeing your name all over the internet. What the hell were you thinking?”“I don’t let any man make advances on my woman. Besides, I kept my face hidden.”His godfather chuckled, excitement clear on the other end. “Lost cause, kid. That’s what I’ve been telling you. When you’re in love, you do crazy things. Don’t you love how it feels? No booze can top that kind of intoxication.”Charles shook his head. Sadie was cool, but the last woman he’d want to fall for. Marriage to her? Hell no. He’d rather be a bachelor at 100.“So, is she pregnant already? I’m coming to check on you two if anything’s wrong,” his godfather pressed.“Nothing’s wrong. You’re ju

“What?” Charles asked, caught off guard. “When you caught her… what did you do? Yell at her? Break something she loved?”Charles let out a short laugh. For the first time since they arrived that evening, Sadie could finally breathe.“It was after that night I realized she never meant anything to me.”“Still,” Sadie said, “you can’t just let her off the hook. She should pay for what she did.”Charles wanted to tell her he already made Emmy pay—leaving was enough. But he didn’t. In two weeks, if the Harrington family didn’t hire people at least half as skilled as he was, their companies would collapse under the weight of incompetence. They’d be swimming in debt.“When are you free this week?” Sadie asked. “Let’s meet somewhere she’ll be. Let her see what she lost.”Charles stared at her, amused. Wasn’t this why she’d been angry earlier? And now she wanted him to use her to make Emmy jealous?“What if she wan

“I’m really sorry if I did something wrong,” Charles said, voice low. “Just tell me what it is. I swear, if I can fix it—I will.”Sadie just stared at him.Charles let out a heavy sigh, then stepped back, defeated. “I’m sorry,” he muttered, turning to leave.“The guy who helped us,” Sadie suddenly said, her voice light—too light. A smile curved her lips, but it wasn’t a happy one. If anything, it made Charles feel worse. “Can I get his number? You must’ve gotten it. Or something.”Charles bit his lower lip. “Sadie…what are you doing?”“Oh, I get it,” she said with a sigh, tilting her head. “He just left. No number. How forgetful of him. And let me guess…he didn’t tell you his name either?”Charles didn’t respond. He couldn't. What was he supposed to say? Had she caught on his lies? No way of knowing yet. “I could’ve thrown a charity gala in his honor,” she added. “Really. It would’ve been the least I could do to sh

As soon as Charles joined her in the car, every question Sadie had been dying to ask vanished into thin air. She knew what she wanted to say, but no reasonable way to bring it up came to mind. And the fact that Charles wasn’t offering her anything made it worse. Seriously? He could do better. At the very least, he should have started explaining things without her needing to drag it out of him. He owed her that much. The drive home was painfully awkward. Charles could feel the questions circling her like a storm, but she never let them out. And that—somehow—made everything ten times more uncomfortable.“Um… I’ll wash up and go to bed,” she said the moment they stepped inside, like she couldn’t wait to escape the silence.“Sadie, about earlier…” Charles started. She paused mid-step, glancing at him. “Huh?”“What happened back at the party… it’s probably the biggest miracle of my life.”She gave a tight smile. “What do you

Back inside the hall, Emmy was the most stunned. That voice speaking over the phone—it was obviously Charles’ voice. It was. But… how? How were these things even happening? The Charles she knew could never have made all this happen. The president of the YT company? A Rolls-Royce? A chopper? No way. Then it hit her.Charles must have done all this to show her something again. To prove he was still capable of being her husband. She chuckled. What a cunning guy.Sadie. It had to be Sadie. She must have been the one who called in all those men at Charles’ request. Damn. She knew it. She knew Charles still had a thing for her.She stood up and picked up her bag. No matter how hard Charles tries, he can never win her heart again. He’s probably regretting divorcing her now. That explains all this drama. He must be so desperate.“This is just the beginning,” she muttered to herself as she walked out of the hall. No matter what he do

Roger clapped once. “Alright then, let’s proceed. First…” He turned dramatically to the crowd like a C-list actor playing villain. “You’ll get Jordan a chopper tonight. Plus a Rolls-Royce. And to wrap it up, help him secure a collaboration with the YT company.”Gasps exploded like popcorn.“Unless he’s the richest man on earth, that’s impossible.”“He won’t even get it done in ten years.”“This guy is such a clown.”“If he had money, he wouldn’t be hiding.”“Sadie got played.”Roger chuckled, soaking in the noise. “Mr. Charles?” he called, grinning. “Still there, or you ran out of credit?”“Yes,” Charles said coolly. “Just a little disappointed, to be honest. I thought you’d ask for something challenging.”A hush fell across the room. What type of guy had that much money to the extent that a Rolls-Royce and a chopper wasn't a challenge to him? Backstage, Charles’s emergency message had already
