Chapter two

CHAPTER 2

“Can someone tell me what the fuck is going on?” he asked in disbelief as his voice shook and Genevieve, who was shocked to see him at first, gave him a look before she got down from the bed and took her time to wear a robe while he waited silently for her to say something.

“Why? Did seven years in jail ruin your eyesight and now you can’t see things clearly?” his wife finally asked him, her voice cold and distant and Berlin stared at her in shock. She was completely different from the Genevieve he knew and it hurt to know that she wasn’t planning to apologize for cheating on him.

“How could you do this to me? I went to jail for you for seven years and you cheated on me with my best friend? For how long has this been going on?” he asked a series of questions and Genevieve smirked before she walked closer to him and looked him blankly in the eyes.

“First, what do you mean by doing this to you? You really didn’t think I would stay celibate for seven years and wait for you right?” she asked him too and he scoffed while staggering back due to the impact of her words on his weeping heart.

“Secondly, I didn’t force you to go to jail for me, Berlin. I asked you for a favor and you willingly took it so don’t rope me into any emotional blackmail by telling me you did it for me. You did it because you love me, okay?” she added shamelessly and by this time, Berlin was too speechless to talk.

“Thirdly, Berlin, I would sleep with whoever I want even if it’s your best friend and I don’t think I’m obligated to tell you how long I and Keith have been fucking around, okay?” she finally replied to all his questions and by then, Berlin had tears falling down his face.

He couldn’t believe that this was what he was making his way home to meet. He thought Genevieve would be happy to see him again, he thought she would welcome him with open arms but instead, here she was, breaking and crumbling his heart to pieces so mercilessly like he never meant anything to her.

“What about all those years we spent together, Genevieve? How could you forget them so easily when we both loved each other so much? How could you just let it all go?” he asked her again as the tremor in his voice increased and she laughed.

“Love fades, Berlin and the love I had for you died right from the moment you got jailed. You didn’t think I would let an ex-con into my house, did you?”

“What? What the hell are you talking about? This is our house” he retorted and she shook her head before glaring at him.

“This is my house, the house my father gifted us but is under my name as ownership. Also, this wedding is over, Berlin, sign these divorce papers and leave. I can’t risk living with an ex-con because what if you hurt me one day?” she told him as her eyes mocked him and Berlin’s jaw dropped on hearing her say those words to him.

“You were the one who committed the crime. You’re the one who assaulted an innocent woman so why would I hurt you when I didn’t even do anything?” Berlin yelled at her frustratingly but she didn’t even flinch. instead, she just smiled maliciously.

“Do you have evidence to prove what you just said?” she fired back at him and he scoffed as many questions swept through his mind on what was happening.

“Sign the papers, Berlin. You have overstayed your welcome in my house” she added and Keith who had been in bed finally joined them where they both stood.

“Genevieve, please don’t do this to me. You can’t do this to me” Berlin began to plead because he had nowhere to go. She was his only family and he didn’t care if she cheated on him as long as she was going to take him back and let him stay as her husband.

“You heard her man, just sign the damn paper and be on your way already” Keith spoke up for the first time and Berlin glared at him with teary eyes before he threw a punch in his best friend’s face and his nose broke on impact.

Throughout the years he spent in jail, he had to do mostly heavy-weight jobs and chores assigned to them so he had grown more muscular and bigger and didn’t think he would be able to hit that hard with just one punch.

He was blinded with rage at that moment so he didn’t care. He only gave in to his frustration and violent thoughts and knelt over Keith before he kept on punching him on and on until Genevieve pulled him away and slapped him hard across the face.

He looked at her in disbelief as he cupped his cheek that stung from her slap while Keith groaned in pain on the floor and she looked like she was about to murder him.

“Sign the fucking divorce papers now and get out of my house, Berlin. This marriage is over and you’d better accept it now because nobody wants you around anymore” she snapped in his face, her words stinging him like daggers and he sniffed before wiping the tears from his eyes as he accepted his new reality.

He nodded wordlessly before he picked up a pen and silently signed all the divorce papers then he looked at Genevieve who was watching him.

“You will regret this. I promise” he told her and that evil smirk of hers returned to her face.

“We’ll see about that, ex-con” she replied and with that, he turned around and stormed out of the house while his heart broke into pieces even more.

He never saw this coming. He never thought Genevieve would let him go after using him and making him an ex-convict but what could he do? He was powerless against her so he couldn’t even make her pay if he wanted to. This was his new reality now and it was high time he accepted it.
