His Return From Prison

The Wicked Rejection.

"What are you doing here? You can't be here, my daughter no longer wants a criminal for a husband, please leave."

Liam stared down at his mother-in-law as she said those demeaning words to him. Today was the day he was released from prison after six years of staying in prison for a crime he did not commit.

Six years ago, he was arrested and the police claimed he raped a young teenage girl and after months of trial and investigations, he was found guilty.

Staying in prison, Liam has always dreamt and imagined the day he would leave prison and his beautiful wife would be waiting for him, he had hoped their reunion would be a happy one.

However, when he didn't find his wife and in-laws waiting for him in the waiting area, his dream shattered. He could only stand there and watch as the other ex-con reunited with their friends and families.

When his wife didn't show up after hours of waiting, he decided to go home all by himself.

She might have forgotten that today was his release day, he thought to himself.

Getting to his in-laws' house, he noticed there was music playing loudly from inside as if they were holding a party or something.

What were they celebrating? He wondered as he approached the front door and knocked on it but got no response and after several loud knocking, the door was swung open to reveal his mother-in-law who hadn't changed much.

Her fat body adorned in a long satin dress stood by the door, and she had her dark hair packed up in a tight bun. She was still as short as he remembered. Her chubby face had wrinkles.

She looked shocked to see him but the shock soon vanished to be replaced by a scowl.

"You. What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be in prison? Did you escape?" She asked while staring at him from top to bottom, feeling disgusted by his presence.

Liam frowned, a little surprised at the way Susan behaved towards him.

"I was released today and Cara knows about it." He spoke for the first time since his arrival. His voice was a little bit deeper than before, Susan noticed but the disgust in her face remained.

"You better leave my daughter's name out of your mouth, she doesn't want you anymore. Leave." Her eyes were sharp and cruel, they stared at Liam's calm face.

One could notice the impatience in her face, she couldn't wait to send him away.

Liam ignored Susan and tried to look into the house from the little gap in the door, the music was still playing and he could see the coloured lights coming from inside.

Just in time, he heard someone's laughter, it was Cara's, his beautiful wife whom he left for prison and barely saw afterwards because she visited only once a month and he understood that she was a busy person.

Her laughter, it didn't change much. It still sounded as beautiful as always, soft and calming like a sweet melody created out of this world.

He really wanted to see her, to hold and hug her tightly. He had missed her so dearly and he wondered if she missed him too.

However, after Cara's laughter died down, a masculine one was heard. Someone was inside with her and it was a man.

"Is someone inside? Who is that?" Liam asked with a frown of curiosity but Susan only snorted at him with a small hiss.

"What are you still doing here? You can't be here, my daughter no longer wants a criminal for a husband, please leave." She pressed on, feeling tired that Liam was still desperate to see her daughter.

But Liam wouldn't move an inch. Why was he being chased away? Cara was his wife and he just returned from prison, he had every right to see her.

"I'm her husband and I want to see my wife." This time his voice was a little louder as his patience was running thin.

"If you think my daughter would accept you back then you must be joking. She doesn't want you anymore, just leave and don't create a scene." Susan said but Liam wouldn't move. She sighed as if already exhausted.

"Cara?! Cara!" Liam called out to Susan's surprise. Her eyes widened from shock and Liam's audacity.

"How dare you call my daughter's name? She doesn't deserve you so get lost!" Susan was losing it as she glared hard at Liam.

Liam's call seems to be effective but it wasn't who he was expecting. Instead of Cara, a blonde guy showed up at the door.

The blonde guy was tall but not taller than Liam and he looked well off thanks to the expensive-looking clothes he wore and the pieces of jewellery that adorned his neck.

The blonde guy looked at Liam with a questioning stare as if asking why he was being called when it was obvious no one called him.

Liam looked at him with a blank stare and said, "I called Cara, not you."

"And who are you to Cara?" The blonde guy asked, looking down at Liam and taking note of how unkept Liam was looking.

"Uhh, Matt let's not pay attention to this person, he is obviously-" Susan who tried to speak was soon interrupted by Liam.

"I'm her husband and I'm here to see my wife and not you." His voice was a bit hard, showing he had no time to entertain anybody except to see the most important person, Cara.

But a loud laughter erupted from the blonde guy whose name was Matt, he laughed so hard that it could overshadow the music.

"You? Her husband? Oh, so you were the criminal she told me about. A rapist who went to prison. Have you been released?" Matt questioned, his voice filled with nothing but mockery.

Liam's jaws clicked as he restrained himself from doing anything.

"Matt? What's going on?" A voice asked from inside. The music was no longer playing and Liam could hear the approaching footsteps that belonged to Cara.

She soon walked to the door and her face was revealed to Liam. A smile nearly broke out on his face on seeing his wife, she looked so beautiful and happy...

However, the expression on her face the moment she noticed him was what Liam never expected. She seemed angry to see him and he frowned at the disgusted glare she sent his way.

"And what are you doing here? What do you want? You criminal!" Cara asked, her voice loud and harsh to Liam's surprise.

Why? Why was she asking him such questions? Shouldn't she be happy seeing him out of prison?
