Chapter 6

James pulled back his hand from Thomas’ soft grip. He then chuckled, shaking his head, refusing to believe, “You can't be my father. I'm an orphan, sir.” He said, getting on his feet.

Thomas also stood up, emotions, guilt, and embarrassment washed over him, “And what about the name?”

Yes! James knew his surname was Thomas and his grandfather's name was Crag. He only knew about his grandfather's name as a result of a story told to him by people when he was growing up.

But he shook his head, “Anyone can bear any name similar to another, but that doesn't mean he's the person.” James replied, almost sounding rude.

Thomas nodded, “You're right, but the case here is different. You're my long-lost son, James.” He stepped out from where he was seated to touch James,, but he moved back, vigorously shaking his head once more.

Thomas’ expression changed to regret, his eyes almost downcast, yet with a determined face, he said, trying to be persuasive, “I know this is unbelievable, but you are. You are my son. Look here,” he rushed over and took a document of his, showing it to James.

“We bear the same here. You're James Thomas, and I'm Thomas Crag. Please, believe me. I can show you more evidence if you want.” He stated, but James stood there, silently, not believing a single thing.

“Look here again.” Thomas removed a locket hanging around his neck, revealing a tiny picture to James—a boy at the age of five holding a ball in his hand and a man standing beside him. The man happened to be him, Thomas.

“This is me and you with your favorite ball that I bought for you when you were still little, remember?” He asked, observing James’ shocking composure. “Do you remember when I'd call you to come to have breakfast, and you'd refuse and go out with your friend, Jack, to play football because it was your favorite?”

Boom! The whole revelation came as a shock to James as his eyes flew open, astonished. The picture shown to him was the real him, and Jack was also his best friend, whom he never joked with.

“This can't be true. H—How do you get this image of me from?” James stammered, still staring at the picture with disbelief, “And how do you know Jack was my childhood best friend?” His heart raced.

Thomas tried to force a smile onto his face, “I wouldn't have known this if you weren't my child, James. Believe me, I'm your father, and you aren't an orphan. You have a father, and he's standing right in front of you.” Thomas said firmly, nodding his head in support.

Tears streamed down his face. He was emotionally touched seeing how battered James was dressed.

Although there was evidence that backed it up, James’s heart clenched together, his face tightening. “I have a Dad like you, and I've been living like this?” He spat, “You can't be my father! A man who never asked about his son's existence is not worthy of being called a Dad.”

He angrily grabbed his documents, shoving them roughly into his file, and was about to leave, but Thomas ran ahead of him and fell to his knees.

“I'm sorry, son,” he began, regret flashing through his eyes, “I know you would be mad at me for not finding you all these years, but I actually searched for you; I made endless searches about you, but couldn't find you.” A trace of sorrow ran in his expression.

James, still holding his file tightly, glared at Thomas, his jaw tightening, “And you sit back to enjoy all your wealth alone?”

“No, no, James. Don't get this all wrong. I keep thinking about you every day of my life; that's why I go with this locket as a memory, but I'm glad fate has brought us on a path.”

James continued to glare at Thomas, his blood boiling. He tried to voice out how angry he was, but he chose to hold his angry words with gripped lips.

He furiously picked up his heels to walk toward the door when Thomas called after him, “I'm willing to hand over all my wealth, including this company, to you as proof that I still love you.”

Galp! James’ steps ceased, his face still tightened, but he reluctantly turned, staring at Thomas, speechlessly.

Thomas got up from his knees and rushed forward to him, nodding his head to James, confirming what he just said, “Yes, son. I'll give them all to you as the heir and the next of kin that you are.” His demeanor was more serious. No joke.

A mixture of shock and disbelief flashed through James’ eyes. The man was serious about what he was saying.

“I'll make up for you, I promise. I just don't want to lose you again.” Thomas added, his voice cracking with emotion.

But James’ anger flared the more. Indeed, it was clear that the man was his father, but how on earth wouldn't he get to find him merely knowing how wealthy he was?

“Keep the fucking wealth to yourself! I don't need them!” James yelled, infuriated. “You abandoned me for years and have resurfaced to get me back just because you're rich? Never!”

His reddened eyes shifted to the locked door, “Just get this damn door open and let me go!” His enraged expression was coupled with thin patience.

Thomas looked at his angry expression, annoyed with himself for being the cause. He hesitated before unlocking the door again with the previous code.

Once the door was opened, he said to James calmly, “Anger has taken the best of you because of everything, but please, go home and think about it, and once your mind is made up, don't hesitate to come back and claim your birthright.”

James only swallowed hard without a word. Glancing at Thomas for the last time, he walked away with the words of Thomas' offer echoing in his mind, whether to forgive and take over everything.

“No, this is real,” James muttered, snapping himself out of his thousand thoughts. “It isn't some fantasy. It's really happening.” He nodded firmly, glancing around. Although he knew everything was really happening, he still expressed a bit of doubt. “Can't believe I'll be handling all of these one day. But look at me today, I'll start handling companies worth billions. Hmm…” He exhaled, slowly going lost in thoughts again. Before he could be swallowed by his deep thoughts, his phone buzzed up for an incoming call. Snapped out, he reluctantly pressed the answer button. “Hello, James. Where are you?” Olivia asked, her voice low, seemingly half awake. “It's already too late and you aren't back home.” James sighed slightly. And a faint smirk escaped his lips. “Really?” He exclaimed, his voice calm but bitter. “Why are you asking like you truly care?” Olivia scoffed. “And who told you I do?” Her voice raised with sharpness, cutting the air like a sharpened blade. “I don't give

James sat up slowly. He exhaled, shaking his head slightly. “No, Dad,” he responded, his voice firm. He didn't want to bother him with his family issues. “I just decided to lodge in for the night. Everything is fine. No quarrel at all.” Thomas looked at him. “Are you sure of what you are saying?” He asked, skeptical. “The last time we met I heard how she talked to you over the phone. If anything is going on, please, let me know.” He locked his eyes into James'. “You have everything any woman could ask for, what else does she want from you?”James swallowed hard, his face paled. “Not really, Dad,” he said, “she believes I'm poor. That's what I created in them. Never revealed my wealth to them.”“And because of that, she treats you like trash?” Thomas frowned, and his grin disappeared.James couldn't speak right away. Hesitatingly, he replied calmly but firmly. “Yes. There's this guy, his name is Joshua Arthur. He's trying to create some kind of hatred in her toward me.”Thomas blinke

Meanwhile, in the lobby, ten minutes after the receptionist finished checking Charles in and he left, Thomas entered the lobby.“Sir?” The receptionist said, her voice calm and polite. “Do you need anything?” She asked.Thomas shook his head, his expression chilled. “No,” he glanced around first before adding, “what’s his room number?” “Who are you talking about, sir?” The receptionist asked, confused.Thomas cleared his throat as he responded, his voice barely above a whisper. “My son, the young man, I asked to check him in without collecting a dime. What's the room number?” The receptionist was dumbfounded at some point. She stared at him, disbelieving, crossing her eyes. “He’s your son?” Her eyes narrowed as she asked. She had never met with her boss’s son, nor did she know the young man she had checked in was her young master.Thomas simply gave a curt nod. “Yes, he is.”The receptionist found it hard to swallow. Was it because of this that he had allowed James to check in with

Reluctantly, she pressed, her voice calm but desiring. “Sorry to ask, sir….but are you anyway related to my Boss?”James looked at her, his expression unreadable. Her body shivered slightly. Her lips were trembling as she added, “Didn't mean to intrude…it's just so unusual. Giving a stranger the Penthouse without any batting eyes.” James huffed and shook his head. He responded politely, acting like he knew nothing. “I have no idea why he did that,” he spread his hands cas

Thomas headed up, looking at James with slight surprise. He wanted to talk to him then, but James shook his head, simply saying, ‘Not now or here.’ Thomas nodded in understanding. Charles got to him, bowed his head in respect as he began to talk. “Sir, I'm so grateful you came at the time you did.” Thomas looked at him and asked. “Any problem?” Charles nodded. “Yes, sir. This man…” he turned, pointing at James, “he's here in your restaurant to steal. He's got nothing better with his life to do, but to go about….” He began. “Really?” Thomas cut in, his eyes a little angry. “You think he's here to steal? What proof do you have?” Charles hesitated. He bit his lip slightly, scratching the back of his head. “I got no proof, sir,” he stuttered, knowing the consequences of false accusations. “But believe me when I say he's a nobody. He's just a wretched orphan boy dependent on his wife to survive.” “Just shut up!” Thomas yelled, his jaw tightened. Charles was taken aback. His

Entering the lobby, James' feet clinked softly against the marble floor, his expression focused as he ignored the luxurious decor around and walked straight to the receptionist's desk. “Hi, good evening to you,” James said, his voice calm and firm. The receptionist glanced up from the system, a hint of disdain in her eyes. Shifting her body slightly, she replied. “Good evening, sir! Welcome to the Luxe Hotel. How may I help you?” She asked with a practiced smile. James returned her smile. “Is there any room available?” He asked. The receptionist was reluctant. “Yes?” James swallowed hard and exhaled. He could sense that this lady was already looking down on him. “...uh…could you please tell me which one is available? Just want to spend the night here.” The receptionist looked at him, skeptical. “Sorry, sir. This isn't a place for jokes. We mean business here. Can you, please, tell me the reason you're here?” Her voice was slowly rising. “If it's the security guard post y
