Pain did not just hurt; it tore Thorn apart from the inside out.
His skin burst open in tiny red tracks as blood leaked out from every pore along his arms, chest, and neck. The feedback from the stone hit him like a runaway cart. He doubled over into the mud, clutching his ribs and spitting dark red drops onto the cold ground.
"Stop," Thorn choked out, his fingers digging into the hard lump in his chest. "Stop, just stop right now."
The artifact inside his body did not listen. It vibrated with a dark, heavy rhythm that echoed through his bones, shaking his entire frame.
"What is wrong with you?" Thorn gasped, trying to pull his hand away. "I used your power, so why are you killing me?"
Under his boots, the ground began to act wrong. The heavy rain stopped falling downward. Instead, fat drops of brown water floated sideways, hovering in the air like glass beads. The heavy rocks along the ravine wall lost their anchor to the earth, drifting upward into the grey sky as if they weighed nothing at all.
Thorn took one shaky step back, but his boot found no solid ground. The wet dirt beneath him dissolved into a swirling pit of pitch-black nothingness.
"No, nononono!" Thorn yelled to the empty air, scrambling wildly with his bleeding fingers to catch a thick tree root. "Hold on, move!"
The mud beneath his hands crumbled into floating dust. The natural rule that held the ground down was gone. The earth was falling upward and sideways at the same time, opening a jagged hole that swallowed light, air, and stone.
A loose boulder floated past his head, missing his ear by an inch. Thorn kicked off the rising stone with his heel, throwing his upper body onto a solid ledge of clay that had not yet broken apart. His fingers dug deep into the wet earth.
"You stupid stone," Thorn panted, staring down into the growing void beneath his dangling legs. "You are going to kill us both!"
The void did not answer, but the air around the edge of the pit turned a strange, unnatural purple color. The mud on the rim turned into glass, frozen solid despite the warm air. The world was not fixing itself. The hole stayed open, a jagged scar carved directly into the land, refusing to close or heal.
"Hey!" a voice suddenly echoed from the top of the cliff above him.
Thorn froze, his fingers caked in wet dirt. He looked up through the rain. A lone patrol guard from a local border sect stood at the cliff edge, staring down into the ravine with wide, terrified eyes.
"What did you do down there?" the guard screamed, pointing a shaky spear at the floating rocks. "Who are you?"
"Get away from the edge!" Thorn shouted back, his voice raw and cracking. "The ground is not real down here!"
"You broke the earth!" the guard yelled, his face turning pale as bone. "I saw the flash from the path! You used forbidden magic!"
"I did not do this on purpose!" Thorn grunted, hauling his torso higher onto the ledge. "If you come down here, you will fall into nothing!"
"Liar!" the guard shouted, reaching for a brass horn strapped to his belt. "You are an outcast rogue! The overseers will skin you alive for this!"
"Put the horn down!" Thorn snapped, dragging his blood-soaked legs out of the pit. "If you blow that, you bring them all here!"
"That is the point, trash!" the guard roared, lifting the brass horn to his mouth.
Thorn did not have time to think. He shoved his bleeding right hand toward the cliff top. He did not use a massive wave of power this time. He just flicked a tiny, desperate pulse of black force straight at the guard’s boots.
"Wait, do not!" Thorn yelled, though he knew it was too late.
The black pulse hit the cliff face beneath the guard. The stone holding the guard up simply ceased to exist. The ledge vanished into grey dust, and the guard let out a short, terrified scream as he plummeted into the void.
"No!" Thorn gasped.
The guard hit the edge of the purple void and did not crash onto the ground. He floated sideways, trapped in the strange gravity loop, spinning around in circles like a leaf in a windstorm.
"Save me!" the guard shrieked, his spear drifting away into the sky. "Pull me out! It is pulling my legs apart!"
"I cannot!" Thorn shouted back, crawling onto his hands and knees on the top trail. "I do not know how to turn it off!"
"You monster!" the guard wailed, his voice growing fainter as he spun deeper into the purple rift. "You broke the world!"
Thorn pulled his body fully onto the trail, groaning as his broken ribs ground together inside his chest. He lay flat on his back, staring up at the warped sky, his lungs burning for air.
"A permanent mark," Thorn whispered, watching the purple light flicker down in the pit. "It does not go away. It just stays open."
He lifted his trembling right arm. His pale skin was crisscrossed with ugly red lines where his veins had burst under the strain. Every single muscle felt like it had been boiled in oil.
"I cannot use this casually," he muttered, his chest rising and falling in shallow, painful hitches. "If I keep breaking the rules, there will be no world left to stand on."
He pushed himself up to an elbow, looking back down at the edge. The guard was gone, swallowed by the purple void. The hole did not fill with dirt. It did not settle. It was a dead spot where weight and direction simply refused to work.
"I have to move," Thorn told himself, forcing his shaky legs to bend. "I have to get away from this ravine right now."
He took two painful steps forward on the muddy path before a terrifying noise stopped him cold in his tracks.
The air pressure dropped so fast his ears popped with a sharp, stabbing pain. The grey clouds above the forest split wide open, pulled apart by an invisible hand. High above the mountain peak, a giant golden horn cut through the clouds, its deep sound rolling across the land like thunder.
The horn blew once, a long, booming blast that made the frozen glass in the pit rattle and crack.
Thorn gripped his chest, his dark eyes wide as he stared up at the sky. "No. Not already."
The sound echoed off the distant mountains, repeating three times in a heavy, rhythmic tone. It was not a call for local soldiers. It was a cosmic alarm. A signal to the divine overseers that someone had torn a hole in the fabric of creation.
"They heard it," Thorn rasped, his throat dry despite the falling rain. "The divine overseers know."
He did not look back at the pit. He did not look back at the floating rocks or the frozen glass. Thorn turned toward the thick forest, dragging his ruined body into the dense trees as fast as his broken legs could carry him.
"I need to hide," he said through grit teeth, stumbling over a thick tree root. "I need to hide before they lock down the entire region."
Behind him, the distant horn blew a second time, its harsh note promising complete destruction to whatever had broken the world.

THE FRACTURE WIDENS
The sky was bleeding, and there was no way to stop it.Thorn stood in the quiet canyon, staring up at the empty space where the golden bird had vanished. His chest heaved with slow, heavy breaths, but his heart felt like a block of ice."We need to move now," Lyra said in his head, her ghostly voice sharp with panic. "That messenger bird will reach the high council before the sun sets. Every hunter on the continent is coming for your neck.""I know," Thorn grunted, taking a step forward. He stopped instantly, his boots frozen on the dirt. A strange, wet tearing sound filled the air, echoing from high above the slate walls. It did not sound like thunder or cracking rock. It sounded like thick cloth being ripped apart by massive hands.Thorn looked up.The blue sky above the canyon split open. A jagged, dark purple tear stretched across the clouds, growing wider by the second. Pale purple light poured out from the rift, casting long, unnatural shadows across the dirt."What is that?" Th
COLD CALCULATIONS
Even a dying god could still burn down the forest.Elder Vane lay spitting blood on the dirt, but his golden eyes burned with pure hatred. He grabbed his sword hilt, pulling the bloody metal free from his own ribs with a wet tear."You think you won, rat?" Vane spat, his voice trembling with crazy rage. "If I die here, I am taking this whole canyon down with me!"Golden light flared around Vane’s body, wild and out of control. The earth beneath them started to shake as the sheer volume of his stored power began to leak out into the air. He was not trying to aim a blade anymore. He was turning his own body into a bomb, preparing to blast every inch of the pass into fine dust."Stop him!" Lyra yelled inside Thorn's mind, her voice sharp with real panic. "He is blowing his spiritual core! If that light detonates, it will vaporize everything within three miles!"Thorn did not back away. He did not run from the rising heat. His face stayed stone cold as he took one long step forward, stepp
THE HUNT BEGINS
Running from a god on wings was a fool's errand.Thorn sprinted through the dense, jagged trees of the outer wilderness, his boots slamming hard against the uneven soil. Above the thick canopy, a bright trail of golden light tore through the clouds, cutting down tall pine trees like dry grass."You cannot hide from the sky, little rat!" Elder Vane’s voice thundered from above, vibrating the dirt beneath Thorn’s feet. "Every breath you take leaves a trail of corrupt magic in the air!"Thorn did not look up. He kept his head down, breathing heavily through his nose as he darted between massive stone boulders. His body burned from the strain of the landslide, and his right hand remained cold and numb."He is closing in fast," Lyra’s sharp voice echoed in his mind. "A high-master can cross three leagues in a single heartbeat while flying. Your legs will fail long before his energy runs dry.""I am not trying to outrun him," Thorn grunted, leaping over a fallen log and skidding down a stee
SHATTERING THE SECT
A single thought could bring down a mountain.Elder Vane did not wait for Thorn to answer. He raised his golden blade, sending a blinding wave of light upward through the ceiling. The light punched clean through the earth, tearing the mountain open to the sky and exposing the dark cavern to the gray afternoon."Purge this filth!" Vane roared, his heavy voice echoing across the entire mountain range. "Burn the camp! Burn the valley! Leave nothing of this cursed place alive!"Above them, the sky exploded in golden fire as the sect disciples unleashed their full power on the mining camp. Screams of sheer terror echoed from the surface as hundreds of miners and lower cultivators were cut down in seconds by falling light."He is destroying the whole valley to wipe out your footprint, boy!" Lyra shrieked in anger, her spectral chains rattling against the crumbling rock face. "Unmake my chains right now or we both die under this mountain!""Shut up," Thorn said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
THE FIRST BARGAIN
Never make a deal with an entity that has no soul left to lose.Thorn did not back down. He stood his ground on the cold cavern floor, staring straight up at the giant frozen eye hovering in the dark. The purple light from the rift shifted, forming the faint silhouette of a woman bound to the rock wall by nine massive black iron spikes. Her hair floated like silver smoke, and her glowing eyes burned with ancient hatred."A mortal boy," a voice echoed directly inside Thorn's head, sounding like grinding glass. "A fragile, bleeding insect holding the heart of the Unmade Primordial."Thorn clutched his chest, his dark eyes narrowing. "Who are you?""I am Lyra," the voice rasped, her spectral chains rattling in the dark. "I am what remains of the original world before those golden usurpers chained us and called themselves gods. They lied to you, little rat. They did not create this universe. They stole it and locked the true owners under the dirt.""I do not care about your history," Thor
THE WEIGHT OF HUMANITY
A human life meant nothing when the roof started to cave in.Thorn stared at the massive black door, his fingers trembling as he traced the glowing symbols carved into the metal. The stone in his chest pulsed hard, demanding to be let inside."Hey! What are you doing down here?" a loud voice shouted from behind him.Thorn turned around fast. A older miner stood at the end of the narrow tunnel, holding a flickering oil lamp. His face was covered in thick black dust, and his eyes were wide with suspicion."Get away from there!" the miner yelled, stumbling forward over the loose rocks. "That area is forbidden! The guards will skin us both if they catch us near the old seal!""Go back," Thorn said softly, his voice dead and calm. "You should not have followed me.""I saw you sneaking down the main drift," the man grumbled, waving his pickaxe threateningly. "I am not taking the blame for your mess. We are going back up right now, or I call the watch!""I am not going back," Thorn said.He
