CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

"Welcome home."

The voice came from the figure seated on the eighth pedestal.

It sounded exactly like mine.

I stood at the elevator entrance, unable to look away from the silver mask covering its face. Black armor covered its body, and violet energy moved beneath the metal like blood flowing through veins.

The blade across its knees was Widow-Maker.

Not a similar weapon.

My weapon.

I looked down at my hand.

The knife was still there.

I tightened my grip.

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR The elevator shuddered beneath our feet. I stared at the System notification floating before my eyes, unable to ignore the words that had appeared at the end of the last message. IDENTITY CONFLICT WILL BECOME IRREVERSIBLE. Two original birth records. Two children. One name. And something beneath Central Tower had just called me its little brother. “Tell me what you know,” I said to the girl. She glanced at the elevator doors. “I know we have a problem.” “That isn't an answer.” “It's the only one I can give you without making things worse.” Julius leaned against the wall, one hand pressed against his ribs. His face had regained some color, but black veins still crawled beneath the skin around his neck. Whatever had happened during the authority trial, his body hadn't recovered. “She's hiding something,” he muttered. The girl looked at him. “You murdered your best friend and spent the next five years helping the person who arranged it. Maybe you should si

  • Sixty Seconds to Death

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE [HOST WILL BE CLAIMED IN 60 SECONDS.] The notification burned across my vision. I couldn't move. The black-marked hand remained stretched through the opening in the enormous door. Its fingers curled slowly, almost inviting me to take hold. Come home, little brother. Those words kept repeating in my head. I had no brother. At least, not one I remembered. "Aeron!" Elena's voice sounded distant. She grabbed my shoulder and pulled, but my feet remained planted against the floor. The violet symbols on my palm had spread beyond my wrist, forming thin lines beneath my skin. The countdown continued. [00:51.] The girl rushed toward me. "Don't look at the hand!" "I can't move!" "Then stop trying to move your body. Fight the connection!" "What connection?" She seized my marked wrist with both hands. "The authority is using your temporal signature to recognize you. If it completes the connection, it won't need your permission anymore!" The black hand twitc

  • The Boy Who Stole My Death

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO "The man with the silver hair?" I repeated. The boy behind the glass shook his head. "No. He's only a messenger." "Then who heard me?" The boy smiled faintly. "You did." I stared at him. "That makes no sense." "It will." Behind me, Elena shifted Julius's weight against her shoulder. Daniel kept his rifle trained on the corridor, while the unnamed girl stood perfectly still. I glanced at her. "How much do you know about this place?" "Enough to know we shouldn't be here." "That's not an answer." "It's the only one I can give you right now." The boy laughed. "She's still afraid of the truth." The girl's expression hardened. "Be quiet." "Or what? You'll erase another memory?" She went pale. I turned toward her. "What is he talking about?" She didn't answer. I faced the boy again. "You said something heard my regret. Then you said I heard it myself. Explain it properly." The boy stepped away from the glass and returned to his bed. "Come inside

  • the Friend I killed

CHAPTER THIRTY Julius stood in the center of the chamber, waiting for me to attack. The black sword in my hand felt heavier with every passing second. Its blade was covered in thin violet lines that pulsed like veins, and whenever I tried to release it, my fingers refused to obey. The System had chosen my opponent. Now it wanted me to kill him. Again. "You heard the announcement," Julius said. "Come on, Aeron. Let's get this over with." "Shut up." He gave me a tired smile. "Still don't like taking orders?" "I said shut up!" I forced my fingers open. The sword remained in my hand. A warning appeared. [TRIAL PARTICIPANT ATTEMPTING TO REJECT DESIGNATED WEAPON.] [REJECTION DENIED.] [FAILURE TO ENGAGE WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE TERMINATION.] My stomach tightened. The System wasn't merely encouraging us to fight. It was threatening to kill us if we refused. I looked toward Elena. She was striking the invisible barrier with everything she had. Daniel had joined her, firing

  • The New Seven

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE Every pedestal began to glow. Violet light rose from the floor, forming seven columns around the chamber. The eighth pedestal remained dark, its armored occupant watching me without moving. Then the lights changed. Seven figures appeared inside the columns. I recognized none of them. One was a woman wearing silver armor. Another was an old man with a wooden staff. A third was a young man whose face was covered in black markings. The remaining four looked equally strange, each carrying a different weapon and wearing a symbol I couldn't identify. The System appeared. [AUTHORITY RECORDS RESTORED.] [SEVEN ORIGINAL HOLDERS DETECTED.] [WARNING: RECORDS DO NOT MATCH THE CURRENT TIMELINE.] I looked at the figures. "Who are they?" The masked figure on the eighth pedestal answered. "The first seven people who tried to control the apocalypse." "People?" "Once." The silver-armored woman stepped forward inside her column. Her eyes were empty, but her mouth move
