The government hearing
Two weeks later, the government hall was packed with Senators, officials, and the President himself as they all sat facing Barry and Veronica. Barry sat calmly in his chair, his arms crossed. He was the silent observer while his wife did the talking. All eyes were on Veronica, who stood at the podium, representing Sullivan Group."Thank you for having us," Veronica began, speaking into the microphone. "After careful consideration, the Sullivan Group has agreed to provide the $20 trillion loan needed to restart the government."A wave of relieved murmurs swept through the room."Moving forward," she continued, and the room fell silent again. "This is a business agreement. These were the offers brought to us by Senator Davis." She held up a tablet. "One: The Sullivan Group and all our companies will never pay federal taxes again."She swiped to the next point. "Two: We get to build and manage our own infrastructure, like ports and power grids, without government red tape."She swiped
The senator's offer
Barry had no love for the current administration. The previous government had been pragmatic, understanding and had a symbiotic relationship between them and his corporation. But this new regime only saw Sullivan Group as a piggy bank to be cracked open.Ever since Barry's official retirement as Sullivan Group chairman, Veronica and Snow have been battling with sudden tax hikes and endless regulatory hurdles from the government. The senate, in particular, had been a thorn in their flesh.“Shut down?” Barry repeated, his voice low. “How is that even possible? They’ve been bleeding us dry for months.”“According to Senator Davies,” Veronica began as if she was delivering a boardroom report. “He came to me, hat in hand. It seems their plan had a fatal flaw.”She paused, ensuring she had his full attention. “Their plan was to use the big taxes they were forcing us to pay as leverage to borrow even more money.”A cold, grim smile touched Barry’s lips. He could see where this was going.“
A senators visit
Akame stood silently by the large window, her arms wrapped around herself. She watched as two police officers shoved her father into the back of a black-and-white car. There was no sadness nor pity in her eyes. Instead her eyes were hollow, weary and filled with disappointment.Barry walked up behind her, his footsteps stopping a few inches from her. "I'm sorry you had to go through this, Akame," he said, his voice gentle. "I know how hard this must be, seeing your own father taken away."Akame didn't turn. "You shouldn't be sorry, Mr. Sullivan," she replied, her tone flat and distant. "I could care less what happens to him now. I'm just glad I'm well and alive, thanks to you.""He will be formally charged with conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, and fraud," Barry explained. "The evidence from Ramon is enough to put him behind bars. He will spend the rest of his life in prison. There will be no parole."A small, cold smile touched Akame's lips. "Good," she said softly. "Do wha
Ramon's betrayal
A wave of nervous murmurs swept through the lawyers. The lead attorney, a man with severe glasses, cleared his throat and leaned forward."Mr. Sullivan, with all due respect," he began, choosing his words carefully, "the law in this matter is quite clear. In the absence of a will, which we have confirmed does not exist, the estate passes to the closest living relative. As Akame Yamamoto's father, Mr. Yuji Yamamoto is the undisputed and sole heir. We have the death certificate and all the necessary documentation. There is no legal basis for your refusal."Another lawyer chimed in, "We understand this is emotionally difficult, but you are holding assets in trust. Your fiduciary duty, at this point, is to release them to the lawful beneficiary."Yuji shot to his feet, his face purple with rage. He slammed his hands on the table. "You hear that, Sullivan? There's no basis! This is my money! I am not going to sit here and watch you steal what is rightfully mine!"Barry had let them all spe
Akame's death
The next morning, Akame moved slowly. The house felt too big and too quiet without the loud, messy presence of her father. Part of her wondered if she’d been too harsh. Was he suffering somewhere? Did he regret it?A soft knock came at her door. “Akame-sama,” her chauffeur’s voice called gently. “The car is ready. You are running late for school.”“I’ll be down in a moment,” she replied, taking a deep breath. She shoved her books into her bag. She had to be strong. Mr. Sullivan had warned her. Her grandfather would have wanted her to be strong. She hurried downstairs and slipped into the back of the waiting black sedan. The car pulled away from the ryokan, merging into the morning traffic. She stared out the window, watching the serene cityscape blur past, lost in her thoughts. They were on a quieter, tree-lined road leading to her academy when a large, unmarked white van suddenly swerved in front of them. Her chauffeur slammed on the brakes with a curse. Before he could react, th

That evening, the house was quiet again—eerily quiet. Akame had locked herself in her room, her cheek still red from the slap, her heart torn between rage and heartbreak.Meanwhile, Yuji sat in his bedroom surrounded by the smell of perfume and alcohol, two women giggling beside him. But his laughter had faded long ago. His eyes, bloodshot from drink and frustration, burned with bitterness. He had lost control of his daughter, and worse, of his access to money. That night, long after the women had fallen asleep on the bed, Yuji stepped outside into the cold air, lit a cigarette, and stared at the dark city skyline. His thoughts were ugly.He muttered to himself, “She thinks she can defy me. She wouldn’t have any of it if it weren’t for me. That money... it’s mine. I'll take it back even if I have to kill her.”The ember of his cigarette glowed red as his mind drifted toward a dangerous thought. If Akame wouldn’t listen to reason, there were other ways to reclaim what was “rightfully
