A month had passed since Barry left his life behind.

Now, he sat on a stack of steel beams under the shade of a half-built warehouse, wearing a stained orange vest and a hard hat.

The midday sun hung high, casting waves of heat across the construction site.

Dust clung to his boots and pants, and sweat rolled down the back of his neck.

He unwrapped a sandwich he’d packed that morning. It was just bread, lettuce, and a slice of ham.

The bread was a little dry, the ham a little thin, but he didn’t complain.

This was his life now.

The midday sun beat down on his back as he took a bite, the dry bread sticking in his throat.

He washed it down with lukewarm water from a dented canteen.

For a while, he sat there, his mind racing with questions.

What was he even doing here?

He’d been in Z City for weeks now. This was the very same city where he had once rescued Adam from the Homeland family.

And yet, despite everything the Golden Cat had warned, the Black Cat of Misfortune hadn’t sh

The hawk-nosed envoys' face flushed with anger as he faced Barry. “You’re threatening the king of our nation,” he said sharply. “Do you even understand what you’re saying?” Corvus lifted a hand, signaling his companion to sit back down, though his own eyes were chips of ice. “Do you know the consequences of your actions?” Corvus asked coldly. “A threat against our king’s life is no small matter. It could mean war. Is that what you want, Barry Sullivan? To drag your city into a conflict with a sovereign military power?” Barry listened, unfazed. He took a slow breath before responding. “I don’t know Princess Elara’s uncle personally,” he said. “But I know this much—he is not worthy of being called a king. He took the throne from his brother by force. A man like that doesn’t deserve the title.” He leaned forward, his gaze locking with Corvus’s. “Which is why I’m giving him three days. Three days to step down, release the true king, and surrender himself for judgment.” Corvus’s ja

  • The three envoys

Sebastian had already arranged everything by the time Barry arrived. The private reception hall was softly lit for their guests. A low table sat at the center, crystal glasses filled with deep red wine neatly arranged atop it. The three envoys from House Lionheart were seated opposite one another, their posture stiff. They were dressed in dark, military-cut suits with the royal insignias denoting rank. These men were sent on a critical assignment—to retrieve the princess. But deep down, they were restless, not because of the princess but because they'd be dealing with The Big Man.Sebastian stood at the side with a composed expression, pouring red wine into crystal glasses for the three visitors.“…a vintage imported from the southern valleys,” he said smoothly. “A personal favorite.”One of the envoys lifted his glass, offering a thin smile. “You are most gracious.”The doors to the hall opened. The room shifted instantly.Sebastian straightened and turned, bowing slightly as Barry

  • A powerful uncle

"What kind of power exactly," Barry asked. Elara rubbed her temple, as if trying to refresh her memory. “I don’t know exactly. Some of my father’s loyal alias returned to the nation to see if they could regroup, to fight back and end the coup.”Her gaze dropped. The room fell quiet for a moment. Then the girl spoke again, her voice heavier than before.“The last message I received, came from one of my remaining sources inside the capital. They said the counter-coup failed. It ended without a single shot fired.”Veronica frowned. “Without fighting? How is that possible?”Elara turned to reply to her. “My supporters surrounded the palace. They had the numbers and weapons to counter the coup. Everything was in their favor.” She paused, her hands clenched by her sides. “But the moment they confronted my uncle, something unexpected happened.”"What happened?" Barry asked. She swallowed. “In the blink of an eye, every single one of them lowered their weapons and bowed to my uncle. They s

The doors slid shut, sealing him as the numbers climbed. His reflection stared back at him from the mirrored walls. Barry could barely recognize himself."Veronica was right," he muttered, feeling his face with his hands. "I haven't aged a bit."Now that he had awakened Sebastian's gift, he felt powerful than the average human. His senses were heightened, his reaction time was insane and he could outrun a speeding bullet. • A true Alpha

Behind him, the members of the Draco family were frozen as well—their mouths open mid-chant.Time has stopped.Barry exhaled slowly. He reached into his pocket and drew out a strange black ring with an obsidian gem set at it's center. Barry slipped it onto his finger and clenched his hand into a fist. Then he moved, closing the distance until he stood directly in front of Draven. They were so close their foreheads were almost touching.Draven remained frozen in the air, his burning eyes locked on Barry’s indifferent gaze.Barry lowered his stance. His body coiled like a spring, spine tightening and muscles compressingEvery ounce of power he could muster gathered around his fist. • The awakening

Draven took off his shirt and slowly spread his arms.Behind him, the members of the Draco family formed a semi-circle, sinking to their knees on the asphalt.Their heads bowed, palms pressed to the ground as they began to chant in a low, ancient tongue that made the air vibrate.Draven inhaled deeply, drawing in their faith. When he turned to face Barry again, his eyes burned faintly like embers.Barry stood several meters away—well within fighting distance. He didn't assume any fighting stance. His posture was careless. His eyelids were lowered, and his expression was empty, as if his mind were elsewhere entirely.Draven sneered inwardly."This man is a madman," he thought. "Leaving himself wide open like this? I’ll roast him to a crisp and be done with it."Draven’s feet shifted, and he began to move. His body flowed into a strange, circular dance. His arms cut through the air like blades as heat gathered around him. Flames coiled up his limbs, warping the air. With a sharp thrust
