In the relentless training grounds of the Crimson Legion, warriors honed their skills, but no discipline could prepare them for the unseen dangers lurking in the shadows.

Amidst the swirling dust of the arena, High-Quarter Colonel Cassia Nightshade danced with her twin scimitars, every move a testament to her lethal skill. Facing her was Marcus, her twin brother, bound to her by more than just blood. Their unique telepathic connection, forged under the rare twin moons, allowed them to fight as one entity. Cassia sensed the slightest shift in the air around Marcus, while he instinctively mirrored her movements. Together, they embodied an unstoppable force.

Cassia feinted towards Marcus's left shoulder, her eyes gleaming with mischief. Marcus met her move with a knowing grin, poised to parry with his heavy broadsword.

But before their blades could meet, Marcus's expression shifted.

His sword slipped from his hands, clattering to the ground. He gasped, collapsing to his knees, clutching his chest as if trying to rip it open.

"Marcus!" Cassia cried out, dropping her weapons and rushing to him. She knelt beside him, gripping his shoulders, only to jolt back as an overwhelming surge of energy crashed through their bond. It wasn't physical pain but a consuming void. For a harrowing moment, Cassia's sight was replaced by an endless, gray graveyard beneath a still sky. A phantom hand gripped her core, accompanied by the distant cries of someone entombed while alive.

The vision shattered, and they both found themselves gasping on the dusty ground.

Marcus's face was pale, beads of sweat marking his brow. "He's gone," he whispered, his voice laced with a vulnerability Cassia hadn't heard since the turbulent days of their childhood. "Cassia... Kael is gone."

"Gone? What do you mean?" Cassia demanded, instinctively reaching for her scimitars as she glanced around the empty parapets. "Did he leave the city? Was he given a new assignment?"

"No," Marcus rasped, struggling to sit, his hands shaking. "Not just gone from the city. He's vanished from existence. His life wasn't ended by illness or injury. It was violently snuffed out. When it happened, the echo hit our bond. It felt like a hand of pure winter reached through the world and dragged him into a void."

A chilling fear settled in Cassia's gut. She recalled Kael's frantic warnings in the wine cellar just a day before, his wild eyes and his desperate claims of an invisible mark burning his soul. They had dismissed him as a drunken soldier under duress. Marius had laughed, Viktor had told him to pull himself together.

But Marcus's soul-bond had never lied. It couldn't be fooled by drink or hysteria.

"The Commander," Cassia murmured, her resolve hardening. "Kael wasn't hallucinating. Exodus Thorne walked out of that ravine."

"But how?" Marcus gripped her forearm tightly, panic edging his voice. "We saw him fall onto the rocks. We watched the life drain from him. No human could survive such a fall, Cassia!"

"Then he's not human anymore," she replied icily, helping her brother stand. "We need to find Marius. If Exodus is eliminating us one by one, we can't stay isolated like defenseless prey."

---

Moments later, the twins burst into the heart of the citadel, the Grand War Room.

Captain Marius Vex stood hunched over a sprawling mahogany table, eyes fixed on a map of the northern border. Beside him, Lieutenant Sera Blackwood traced her fingers along her composite bow, the room imbued with the composed professionalism expected in imperial command.

"Marius!" Cassia shouted, slamming her palms on the table, scattering maps. "Kael is dead."

Marius didn't immediately react. He placed a silver marker on a northern outpost before lifting his gaze, his golden eyes meeting hers. "Lieutenant Darkwater is likely nursing a hangover in some tavern, Colonel. Missing roll call doesn't mean he's dead, does it?"

"My brother felt his soul ripped apart, Captain!" Cassia barked, leaning in. "Our bond doesn't mislead us. Kael was taken. That mark he showed us... it was real. Exodus Thorne is here, targeting us."

Sera Blackwood went tense, her color draining as she let go of her bow. "Marcus... are you certain?"

Marcus nodded gravely, still visibly shaken. "The chill that accompanied his death... it matched the cold from the cellar yesterday. It's him, Marius. The Commander is back for revenge."

Marius's calm facade cracked. His jaw tightened, a dangerous glint in his eyes. He stood slowly, his captain's cloak rippling behind him.

"If this is true," Marius said, his voice measured and deliberate, "we've failed in our intelligence. Lyra reported all sectors secure, with no anomalies."

He glanced toward the heavy oak doors of the war room, his mind racing to counter the threat. "If Exodus is within the city, Lyra’s scouts should have sensed his presence. Either she’s failed us..." Marius’s eyes narrowed. "...or she's withholding information."

"We must secure the city," Marcus urged, his hand on his sword hilt. "Bring in the paladins from the temple. Line the streets with wards."

"No," Marius replied sharply. "Deploying the army to pursue a 'dead' commander would expose our deception about his disappearance. The ensuing panic would disrupt the high-quarter, and the Emperor would hold us responsible. We will handle this ourselves. We are the finest warriors alive."

He turned to the twins, confidence returning. "Exodus taught us the art of pursuit. Let's show him how far we've come. Find Lyra. Bring her to my estate by nightfall. We must uncover what her network conceals."

High above, perched on the cathedral spire, a shadowy figure watched the war room through the eyes of an ash-covered hound.

Exodus Thorne stood in the biting winter wind, his broadsword's emerald runes pulsing rhythmically. Through the creature's senses, he had heard every word of their plans.

Their mistrust of Lyra was deepening, just as he intended.

Drawing his cloak tighter, his abyssal eyes remained locked on the distant barracks.

Another grave awaited its inhabitant.
