Chapter 1: The Awakening of Courage

The apartment didn’t just shake; it groaned, a metallic, tortured sound that set Augusto’s teeth on edge. Outside his bedroom door, the hallway had become a meat grinder. The screams were wet, rhythmic, and abruptly silenced by the crunch of bone.

Augusto sat on the edge of his bed, his knuckles white as he gripped the fraying duvet. He didn't want to look. He didn't want to breathe.

"Hey, don't leave me alone in here, please," he whispered to the empty room, his voice barely a tremor in the suffocating dark. "Just stay quiet. Just wait for the sirens. They have to come, right?"

He stared at the door. Through the thin wood, he could hear the skittering of claws—a dry, sandpaper sound on the linoleum floors. Something heavy slammed into the drywall nearby, and dust rained down from his ceiling, coating his hair in a fine, chalky grey.

"God, let this be a nightmare. Please, just let me wake up," he murmured, pulling his knees to his chest. "I’m not a hero. I’m just a guy who works at the desk. I’m just… I’m just Augusto."

A sharp, high-pitched wail pierced through the ambient chaos of the building. It wasn't a monster's roar. It was human. A child.

"No, no, no," Augusto hissed, closing his eyes tight. "Don't look. Don't go out there. You’re going to die, you idiot."

The wailing grew louder, punctuated by a frantic, high-speed scuttling. The beast was turning its attention toward the sound. Augusto’s pulse thundered in his ears like a drum line. He felt small, frail, and utterly paralyzed by the sheer inadequacy of his own existence.

If I stay here, I live for another ten minutes. If I open that door, I’m dead before I hit the carpet.

"Kid, keep quiet," he whispered, though he knew the child couldn't hear him. "Please, stop crying. It can hear you."

The beast let out a low, vibrating hiss that sounded like a saw hitting a pipe. The child shrieked again, a desperate, sobbing sound that tore through Augusto’s resolve.

"Dammit! Why me? Why do I have to hear this?" Augusto kicked off his covers, his legs feeling like lead weights.

He didn't grab a weapon. He didn't have one. He just lunged for the door handle, his heart hammering against his ribs so hard it felt like a bruise. He swung the door open, the hallway lights flickering with a dying, dying yellow hue.

Ten feet away, a crouching, multi-limbed nightmare—slick with gore and glistening like wet obsidian—had a small boy pinned against the wall. The creature’s head, a jagged mess of mandibles, twitched toward the sound of Augusto’s door.

"Hey! You ugly piece of crap!" Augusto yelled, his voice cracking. He grabbed a heavy metal lamp from his side table and hurled it. It clattered uselessly off the creature’s chitinous shoulder, but it worked. The monster hissed, its multifaceted eyes locking onto him.

"Augusto, you stupid bastard," he muttered to himself, his skin prickling with cold terror. "Run, kid! Get out of here!"

The beast vaulted off the wall, a blur of jagged limbs. Augusto turned, but his feet felt glued to the floor. The beast was too fast. He had miscalculated. He was going to die right here, in the hallway of his own apartment building.

Fear is just a lack of data, he thought, a strange, clinical realization flashing through the panic. But sacrifice… sacrifice is a currency.

As the creature’s razor-sharp limb swung down, aimed for his chest, a jolt of raw, electric heat ignited in the center of his heart. It wasn't adrenaline. It was something heavier, colder, and infinitely more powerful.

Augusto didn't see the text, but he felt the world slow to a crawl. The creature’s claw hung in the air, a drop of black ichor dangling from the tip. He felt his muscles coil—not with his own strength, but with a borrowed, terrifying force.

"What the hell is this?" he gasped, his voice sounding slow and resonant in the thick air.

He stepped sideways. It shouldn't have been possible. He moved like a bolt of lightning, his body blurring through the space the claw had occupied a millisecond before. He grabbed the child by the back of his shirt, shoved him toward the fire escape, and lunged toward the stairwell.

"Go! Move, kid!" Augusto shouted, his voice surging with a sudden, unnatural resonance.

The child scrambled, sobbing, disappearing into the dark of the stairwell. Augusto stood for a heartbeat, his back to the monster. He could feel its breath—rank, sulfurous, and hot—on the back of his neck.

He didn't wait. He sprinted, his legs pumping with a speed that felt like they were being pushed by invisible pistons. Every fiber of his being screamed that this was unnatural, that he was breaking his own frame, but he didn't stop. He vaulted over the banister, sliding down the railings, and hit the bottom floor with a bone-jarring thud.

He scrambled through the lobby, bursting through the glass-shattered front doors and out into the cool, suffocating smog of the street.

He collapsed onto the cracked pavement, his chest heaving. The street was a graveyard of abandoned cars and burning debris. He looked back at the apartment building. The beast didn't follow. It stayed in the shadows of the lobby, its eyes glowing like dying embers, watching him.

Augusto sat up, clutching his chest. The heat in his heart was fading, leaving behind a cold, aching void. He looked at his hands. They were trembling, but they were firm. He had survived. He had stepped into the fire, and he hadn't burned.

"I'm not the same," he whispered, wiping a smear of blood off his forehead. "Something changed."

He looked at the empty street. He was alive, but the silence outside was worse than the noise inside. It was the silence of a hunting ground. He looked back at his reflection in a shattered storefront window. He looked like Augusto, but his eyes were too bright, and the shadow he cast on the ground seemed to flicker, as if it were struggling to keep up with him.

He felt it then—a tether, a line of pressure pulling at his soul, directing him toward the next source of misery, the next risk, the next blood-soaked tragedy.

"Oh, no," he whispered, a hollow laugh bubbling up in his throat. "I'm not a savior. I’m a magnet. And everything that wants to die is going to be coming for me now."

He stood up, his legs steadying. The city was screaming, and for the first time in his life, Augusto felt like he was the only one who could hear the frequency. He wasn't hiding anymore. He was the target.
